Daniel Pugh tied Don Gullett's state record for most TD's in a game with 10.

Going to have to replace offensive and defensive lines, that all should start now with kids getting in the weightroom. Along with a few key skill guys as well but I've a few more players who didn't play this season are going to the gridiron next year.

I can see where you're coming from but I'd do it a little differently. Have a large school overall state champ and a small school overall state champ. You match up a 1A team and 4A team, in the majority 4A is still going to beat on them badly. So just have 3A and 4A state champs play and 1A and 2A play.

I think you're talking about Joe Jacoby. Yes he's from the Louisville area, not sure which high school but also was a standout for Louisville in college. Went on to have a great career as a Hog for the Redskins. Another great from the Louisville area that comes to mind is Howard Schnellenberger from Flaget

I never got to see this All-District team for the last two years. By chance, would anyone possible have that list scrapbooked or on record somewhere?? I would still like to see those. I was actually suprised to see this one.

Looks like a pretty good list a few could go one way or the other. Kevin Williams from Paintsville, I thought was the best TE in this district. Casey Rowe from Pikeville, one of the better DL in this district. I don't know if they voted by positions or just by players because it looks like very few lineman and most skill players and secondary. I guess the team could be loaded up with Hazard, Pikeville and Paintsville players but that's not good for the other teams morale. Glad to see each team have at least two players and I guess this could be reasoning for so many skill players. Didn't hear anything about coach of the year but I'm assuming it's Bill Mike Runyon from Paintsville.

Just to bring back up the point, Phelps had a sophomore DB make AP All-State. Congrats to Mr. Hunt. I just now seen the voting for Phelp's district, All-District team. Did Mr. Hunt make it?? Congrats Charlie Hunt on being All-State 3rd team and All-District honorable mention. I would like to say, thanks to all the media outlets that voted. To the other media guys who had opportunities to vote, get on the ball and support these kids. Sometimes we need to take the blinders off after the season is over to see who the true players were. I have a feeling about this AP voting deal, I'm not saying all the voters have been sucked up to or treated for their son or so and so's son to get some votes.

Frances, what all schools are included for the large school?? And which ones are in the small school?? I know small is 1 and 2A, large being 3 and 4A. Is Sheldon Clark included?? I know they use to be but I think that's when they were in a 3A district with Ashland. So what schools are included?? If Sheldon Clark is included they should have a few kids as well. The only thing that concerns me about Paintsville's players being segregated is that Paintsville hasn't had a representative there the last few years and I don't know if they will again this year. Not only have I not heard of any Paintsville players making All-Area the last few years, I've not heard any of them making All-District either. I still haven't heard if any made it this year, with being district champs you figure the All-District team would be swamped with Tiger players.

The small school should be loaded with Paintsville and Russell kids at least I'm hoping. Both schools deserve it along with their players.

How do you think the Hornets will fair next season? Will the administration finally give some support and hire qualified people? If not, I suspect the Hornets are in for another dismal season. I've even heard they might possible be folding the tents on the program. I hope something changes for the kid's sake, the Hornets have the kids to be competitive.

Jay Cobb is a wonderful coach, and has been for numerous years now. But my pick maybe bias but it would be Bill Mike Runyon from Paintsville even in 1A. First year coach, pulled 10 win season. Unfortunately the magic came to an end at the hands of Coach Cobb. After a 6-5 season which was a disappointment, BMR came in his first year and turned the entire program around. He did this while enduring obstacles beyond which one could imagine. He brought Paintsville their first district title in 20 years. No offense to any of the coaches mentioned, I just think that BMR deserves it.

He's not the only junior that is impressive for Paintsville. Kyle Sublett is a tough LB that has a nose for the football, lead Paintsville in fumble recoveries this season but missed some games earlier in the season. Shane Cantrell tied Pugh as the INT leader for Paintsville. Shane is a hard hitting DB for the Paintsville secondary. I suspect these two will have some time in the backfield with Pugh next season.

I would have thought the same, and maybe even a Paintsville player at least honorable mention. I look at this team, some belong some doesn't. I personally feel Pugh from Paintsville or even Freno for that matter were better DB's than a sophomore who made it from the same district off of a team that was a #4 seed. Guess our teams didn't have a promoter voting.

I'm not arguing with you we support the same cause, Somerset went to the pass in my opinion due to Paintsville stopping the running game after the first quarter. Newell had I think 105 at the half. The LB's didn't show up to play against Pikeville. The other two have premiere backs in Eastern KY. No body but Madison Southern actually held Blume under 100 yards. Most of Blume's yardage came on the outside. Newell is a fast back as well, he broke the one up the middle for a TD and ran outside most of the night after that. You're not going to run these guys down on an outside sweep unless they cut back or you're a D1 linebacker. The 5-2 defense Paintsville was in limits the range of the LB's and the DE's have to make those plays on the edge to cut the run back into the LB's. If your own d-lineman is in your face or in your path I guess you're suppose to fight through the blocker and your teammate right?? I guess you could do that take out the blocker and your lineman resulting in just taking yourself out of the play or get in pursuit angle get downfield and try to make a play. Heck that's 2 blockers and your teammate you have to fight off of to make a play?? Defensive lineman's job is to create havoc, demand a double team and keep blockers off of the LB's so they can roam to make plays. My only point is the run defense impressed me just as much as the pass defense. I think the entire defensive unit needs patted on the back for this game, heck the team does for whole season. If you're going to pinpoint the weakness and the cause of a loss in this one it was the offense. Paintsville's defense forced them to punt numerous times and created a couple of turnovers. Somerset converted Paintsville's turnovers into points, Paintsville didn't do the same with Somerset's turnovers. That was key to this game. I don't think anyone deserves the blame for the loss, things happen, these are only kids, they're going to make mistakes, they all played their guts out and the Somerset players will even tell you that. They played the best they could, I was impressed by the defense and proud of all of them. If the comment was made about the Pikeville or Evarts game because they didn't play well, they were arm tackling and not making plays when in the position to do so. I call them like I see them, if I would have seen LB's play bad I'd tell you about it but I didn't see it this past Friday.

Second man always gets caught, that's just about a given in any situation. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, it definitely wasn't an altercation of any sort. Both were guilty of the infraction, which was within 20 yards of the scuffle. Players get locked up and struggle, it happens in any sport and any level. I'm not saying there shouldn't have been flags thrown. Maybe Cantrell did something I didn't see.

I don't know what game you were at? The linebackers played well all night long, with the exception of the 1st quarter and from where I stood that was due to the d-lineman getting blown off the ball, getting in the linebackers path. How many rushing yards did they give up?? I know Newell exploded in the first for some yardage but after that I don't remember too many yards on the ground after the 1st period, with the rest of his yardage coming from the outside. Secondary is suppose to make tackles when a team runs outside if the DE's get sucked in or blocked. The pass defense wasn't exceptional either they had a letdown resulting in a TD. The defense isn't what killed the Tigers, it was the offense. Go watch the film, you'll see all of these accounts. The offense sputtered all night with the bright spot being the big guys Williams and Ward. Pugh threw for 2 Ints. one of which was returned for a TD and then a blocked field goal returned to the Paintsville 1. An offense like Somerset, it's hard to make a goal line stand from the one. Paintsville's defense gave up 21 and if you don't count the Somerset possession starting at the one they gave up 14. The Tigers offense put up 12. I was impressed with the Tiger defense overall, as most expected the high-powered Jumper offense to explode and it didn't happen.

It was a sloppy game on both behalves, refs seemed somewhat flag happy at times. When they'd get rolling on one team it seem it came in bunches and then they'd be quiet for awhile and then suddenly pick on the other team. Really had no barring on the outcome of this one. Paintsville's offense had bright spots but for the most part sputtered most of the night. I don't think Freno #10 getting injured changed much on offense except for the fact of not really having a healthy tailback to put in. Freno was hurt, Doderer wasn't 100% and Cantrell #24 had gotten tossed earlier in the game. Paintsville's defense stepped up and played after Somerset put up 14 in a hurry. Newell exploded early in the game and had over 100 at the half. Paintsville seem to come alive and keep him somewhat contained after his first TD. Hats off to Wes Ward #35 he played with a purpose tonight, he had that not 1 person is going to bring me down attitude. Somerset couldn't and didn't stop him, it seemed we did by taking his carries away. Hats off to #5 Kevin Williams as well who sacrificed his body numerous times to make key catches. I'm also very proud of the defense as a whole, the pass defense was good tonight as well as run defense after Newell exploded in the first quarter. On to Somerset, congrats to the Jumpers they came out on top tonight. The blocked field goal return was a key turning point in the game. Not sure why Paintsville tried a field goal, especially after the first XP attempt was blocked? The Jumper linebacker #30 made a heckuva play on defense for that interception and then turned on the jets to out run Pugh down the sidelines. I just got done watching the catch in slow-mo from my WYMT recording, he was getting blocked jumped up swatted the ball with one arm and then brought the other arm over to make the catch. Pugh was not hurt to my knowledge, it seemed to me as if he got nervous in the pocket and when he'd scramble the Jumper defense's speed caught him before he could get anything started. The team that converted turnovers to points won tonight. Thanks to Paintsville seniors, guys good luck in your futures, keep your head up and thanks for the ride this season it's been a blast. Again congrats to Somerset and Good Luck next week at NCC, bring it home boys. On a side note about the wreck, it seemed to be a very servere accident. I couldn't tell if there were 1 or 2 vehicles involved. I'm assuming the horses were killed by the SUV that looked as if it had rolled over the embankment and into a field. There was also a sporty looking car, that was on a rollback up on the parkway. To my knowledge, no one from Paintsville was involved and everyone arrived home safely.
