  1. In a game marred by penalties and turnovers the Ludlow Panthers came away with a hard fought victory tonight at James Rigney Memorial Stadium in Ludlow.

After a scoreless 1st half the Panthers scored late in the 3rd qtr to make it

7-0 but Carroll Cty came back in the 4th to score 6 and were unsuccessful on the 2 pt conversion. Ludlow came right back to score another 6pts to make the final 13-6 Ludlow.

Congrats to all the Panthers and especially to 1st year Head Coach Randy Borchers on his 1st career victory. Next up Grant Cty at home on Sept. 1

Congrats to old teammate. Way to go Mr. Borchers.

  2. First off I said 1000-3000 not knowing the exact number.

I guess your right, a school of 700-800 boys is pretty fair playing against schools with 1400-1500 boys. Not to mention the thousands upon thousands of dollars that go into the these private school football programs. Some of the now 4A soon to be 6A are happy to get a few thousand dollars a year. Heck St.X probably spends as much on their mouthpieces as some entire football teams do all season. It's unfair. Until private schools have their own playoffs it will always be a lop-sided tournament..

It's hard enough getting 80 of the 800 boys to play football. I wouldn't doubt that St. X doesn't turn kids away..

The money Trinity and X gets are through Boosters. Public schools are allowed to have boosters as well, on top of that public schools are supported by the state. That gives publics an advantage over privates. Getting kids to turn out is another problem for the school, being public or private does not matter. If you are going to whine about it, bring up things that are unchangeable. If your football culture is weak in terms of amount of participants, how can that be blamed on public-vs-private. That is your schools problem, that is the culture that your school has cultivated. Look in the mirror and make a concerted effort to change that. In terms of size of the schools, what can you do about it, kick St. X and Trinity out of the playoffs?

  3. He had his helmet literally torn off, and it went flying about twenty yards -- for a moment we were worried his head was still in it -- but he just kept going! It was really something to see.

And he wasn't out in the open, running. No, he was just entering the pack, at full steam. Thank goodness he didn't get hurt...but that was a heck of a gutsy play!

Isn't he coming off of a concussion? Gutsy. Great picture by the way.

  4. I agree--I am very defensive--simply because I know the difference between fact and speculation in regard to this situation.

For the record--I don't agree with free thinker. But to be honest--I don't care. The enrollment figures say that NCC should be AA--fine by me.

But your "competition" theory holds no weight with me--here is why--I am sure that NCC would have to play tougher teams if they moved up to AAA . . . . just like you say that there is better competition for Beechwood in AA . . . what is the difference between those 2 options: ZERO. Nothing, Nada . . . . . .

As far as the "no-respect" theory goes--right now--I would say that people MAY NOT HAVE SAID IT--BUT THEY ARE POINTING TO THE FACT THAT BEECHWOOD IS SCARED OF AA COMPETITION.

I have laid out numerous reasons why moving up isn't the right thing for Beechwood right now. I don't know how many more times I have to explain it. I know enough about the situation to feel okay about putting something on here.

This entire subject drives me nuts because of the way people are trying to spin things.

To be honest, I don't think that most people care if Beechwood moves up or not. They were just wondering why they would not. I haven't seen anyone say anything about Beechwood being scared of competition. I am saying that AA teams are traditionally who Beechwood has been playing and competing with deep into the playoffs (with the exception of Mayfield). I think that people were wondering why they wouldn't move up with their competition. People aren't wondering that b/c they think Beechwood is scared, they realize that Beechwood is legitimately has a class A enrollment. It's not a matter of disrespect. "You're smart...I'm dumb. You're good looking...I'm not attractive (Happy Gilmore)" Feel better?

  5. Actually, the only compeition that left was NCC and to a certain extent--Danville.

That is replaced with Louisville Holy Cross.

And the last time I checked--Mayfield has owned the Beechwood series.

I have a better idea of where you are coming from now--I just don't agree. Again--Beechwoods numbers warrant being in A. Not AA or AAA or anything else. I am sure that NCC could have found better compeition moving up as well (they have more kids for enrollment--and they definitely have more kids playing football).

I am not going to lie . . . . . some of the Beechwood arguments are starting to point in the direction of Beechwood not wanting to play NCC or not wanting to play better competition. No one has any factual proof that points in that direction.

I would guarantee that Beechwood ends up with a tougher schedule than the vast majority of AA teams--and probably AAA, AAAA and AAAAA teams next year. Moving up to keep a rivalry with one team that has only recently had success against the red/white tigers speaks to a move that isn't well thought out.

I think that you are getting a bit defensive. Everyone knows Beechwood's past. You cannot play the "no respect" card. Everyone knows that Beechwood would compete well in AA and probably win multiple championships there. 94 Camels response was in defense to his proposal that perhaps the 'Breds moved up to get away from Beechwood. 94Camel is just asking what most of us are wondering, why wouldn't Beechwood move up? I agree, they are entitled to stay where their enrollment places them, the competition just looks tougher in AA.

  6. I'm going with Newport in this game. NCC is good, but they lost everything from last year's team that made them so good. Kiernan, Litmer and Vicars are back, but they are once again a one dimensional team. Passing game is no where near where it was last year. Diehl throwing the ball and Canafax, Bueter and Gesenhues catching the ball were the straw that stirred last year's drink and really opened up the running game. Unless the new qb and receivers improve dramatically from last week and from the Dixie scrimmage that I watched, NCC is a run only offense. And we all know its much easier to defend a one option offense. If they do improve dramatically, then I think NCC will win. At this time for purposes of this guess, I'm assuming they will not improve passing the ball enough in one week to say they will win. Like both teams and coaches a lot, but I'm going with Newport. Good luck to both teams.

As Coach Perry used to say at Hanover, "You improve the most between your first and second game."

NewCath has 2, will they be in.?

  8. IMO I would say Beechwood has a quantum talent advantage in 97 and 98 and 99 and an narrow advantage in 00. NCC had an advantage in 01. Beechwood a narrow advantage in 02. Even in 03, 04. NCC slight advantage in 05 (especially at the end of the season).

From Ryan Ernst' (Enquirer NKY Prep reporter) internet chat:

Ryan: Who is the best head coach in NKY right now? And who has the best coaching staff?

    Ryan Ernst

I'm not a coach, so I kind of have to go off what they tell me. I can tell you that Tom Spritzky at Dixie is probably the most respected for his x's and o's approach to the game. Dale Mueller at Highlands is probably the best motivators. It's hard to argue with NewCath coach Bob Schneider, the state's all-time wins leader. Also, I think Schneider has the best staff. What they did with last year's team down the stretch was unbelievable.

I'll give you the late '90's. The key word in that chat with Ernst is NewCath's staff. They are truly amazing. It's set up a lot like Florida St. Dave Schneider calls the offense, Wagner the Defense and Mr. Schneider makes the crucial decisions, just like you'll find at Highlands.

  9. That has pretty much been the consensus from most people (that doesn't mean the NCC faithful--they have been pretty classy when it comes to that game).

But--the Beechwood PLAYERS never really got the credit that they deserved out of it. NCC has been talked up for having more talent since 2002. Yet--NCC has won once or maybe twice in that period (and it isn't like they were only playing once a year either).

The only thing that I will say is that Beechwood plays balanced football. . . . . .

And NewCath doesn't??? 171.7 yards rushing a game/171.4 passing per game last year. The main difference is that Beechwood has made the plays and NewCath hasn't lately.

  10. To expand on my last post. Nobody would say OC, Lloyd 03', Russell 04', or Pburg 03',04' were poor run defense teams.

That being said. There is some ground on which to make a claim THIS Pirate team can be stopped. It is game 1 and they have not proven any ability to move the ball thus far this season. Still 87 yds? Ludlow will rush for that against the Breds.

Lloyd in '03 was a bad run defense. NewCath ran all over them four weeks before they played Belfry.

  11. Better players?

(Unless somehow NCC coaches suddenly got real intelligent in the last 8 games)

Actually it was a combination of both. The talent has been split pretty even through the years with a huge disparity of talent in the '91 in favor of Beechwood, '97 again in favor of Beechwood, and then in '01 in favor of NewCath. Overall, the games have been played on equal playing fields talent-wise with the exception of Yeagle and his staff making the in-game adjustments needed to win, and usually win big. NewCath's coaching and game planning has taken a quantum leap since the end of the '00 season and now you see games that could go either way, with Beechwood seeming to make the fewest mistakes as of late.

  12. Smoking, Drinking, it's a bar with food. People go there to drink beer and watch games. It's not like the team is there at 6pm for dinner. They are hanging around at 10pm. I'm not saying there's not worse places, but what ever happened to early curfew on week nights? I can't see very many coaches approving of guys hanging out there during the season. After the season it may be a little different if they want to hang out at the bar.

1st, make sure that they were players. 2nd make sure that it was as late as 10pm. If that was the case, then yeah, 10pm is a little late...but wait school hasn't started yet, and I'm not sure that they are still in doubles. Seeing as NewCath's first session is around 6am in the morning, I doubt that it was any later than 10pm. Secondly, we're Catholic. Everywhere we go as a community people are drinking and watching a game...that was a joke. It would probably do you some good to remember what high school was like. It's not all about sports, nor academics. It's a mixture, a healthy mixture hopefully, of the two while building a social network that will last for the rest of your life.

  13. I keep seeing a lot of NCC players spending their evenings at Bw-3. Should they be hanging out in there in the evenings???

It's not like they are hanging out with Johnny Moxon and Billy Bob listening to "Hot for Teacher" if you know what I'm saying. They are meeting at a pretty central location for the team, where they eat and hang out like say, 99% of other high school students would do. Like another poster said, NewCath players have been doing this for years.

  14. I'll give a shot with NewCath, though I'll butcher this since my knowledge of before '93 is hazy at best.
