  1. Yeah you are looking at it wrong...Shelton has had a good year and could put up more numbers...but with the three-headed monster at running backs we have not had to throw the ball that much...Mayfield staple...run the ball and once we suck you up to the line of scrimmage burn you deep with play action...we will see if that formula can work one more time in the '05 season.

    Diehl has over 2,000 yards passing. The QB from Mayfield looked like he had 1400. Can you give me a link to look at that.

  2. From looking at the stats, Mayfields QB has thrown for more yards than NCCs with only 1 less TD, but, he's got 13 ints to only 5 for Diehl...It appears that NCC has about 30 more completions, so, they may be more of a short, controlled passing game with the occasional bigplay, but, who knows...I agree, overall, the stats look very similar...Should be a great game...Can't wait...Go Cards!!!

    I don't think that he has more passing yards, unless I'm looking at things wrong.

  3. 'Bama used a rotation of about 3 backs, including Alexander, until his senior season. The other backs were solid, though I don't remember their names.

    Shaun Alexander is their all-time leading rusher, me thinks.?

    Alabama Larry could probably tell you for sure.

    He was SEC player of the year, and was a major candidate for the Heisman before he sprained his ankle and missed a game and Ron Dayne broke Ricky Williams record.

  4. They won't beat you with 30-40 yard downfield plays, but, are very effective on the 5 to 15 yard routes and screens and can move the chains with it..

    If you can hit the screens and underneath routes with consistency, you have a good chance to move the ball on NewCath. For some reason, covering underneath has been an achilles heel the whole season. They don't cover backs well out of the backfield. They fly to the ball, and have a very good run defense, but their communication on pass defense is lacking. When they drop into their zones, they don't pass off receivers and get caught looking into the backfield too much. That's basically their one major flaw.

  5. Dear NewCath fans:

    I haven't seen your team play, so let me offer some Lessons learned against Mayfield:

    1. You can punch them in the mouth to start the game, and they don't really care;

    2. Their OL is very, very strong;

    3. On film, you will watch them line up in double tights with huge splits and hand it off. Your scouting report will talk about them lining up in double tights, with huge splits and handing it off. In the game, they will line up in double tights, with huge splits, and hand it off, and you still won't stop it.

    4. If you cannot tackle one on one, all hope is lost;

    5. Don't line up in a 3 man defensive line if your DL is small. You will need 5, maybe 6.

    6. If you stunt the wide splits, the OL is smart enough to close it off;

    7. Hatchell is a great big fullback but he deosn't keep his head down, he looks for holes, particularly cutback;

    8. Speaking of cutback, Mayfield's OL coach has taught his backside blockers they are important to the play and they block like crazy. I'd say half their yardage is through backside holes. BIG holes;

    9. Rust and Hatchell are good; the curveball, though, is Dumas. Not scouting him would be an error.

    10. Rust is a great LB; if you try and pass and don't account for him, you will be looking at third and long;

    11. Don't put your weakest OL vs. #54. He will mess up any pulling guards or traps you are trying to run;

    12. You can pass on Mayfield. The trick is deciding to abandon what you've done all season in the 1st quarter and thrown then, because by the time you decide to pass in the 3rd quarter, they are controlling the clock and there's just not time;

    13. Mayfield will leave 8 in the box even when you trot out some receivers and make you throw;

    14. Your kickoffs need to go deep or in the end zone, certainly farther than the 10, or they will start on the 35 or farther every time;

    15. Mayfield's kick coverage is not real good, but their punter is;

    16. Coach Morris will gamble, against odds most people don't like;

    17. Mayfield's fans are LOUD;

    18. Mayfield has history;

    19. Mayfield slows the game down, whether you like it or not;

    20. Find refs who believe in managing the game, not being visible themselves.

    Mayfield 31

    NewCath 21

    Seems like two contrasting styles seeing as NewCath rarely goes from under center or from a huddle. Looks like Mayfield will want to control the clock while NewCath wants to light up the scoreboard as fast as possible. Will be a definitely interesting game. Looks like NewCath needs to get an early lead to keep Mayfield from running. Of course, NewCath's strength is their rush D. If anything, you can find holes by passing the ball over the middle. This will be fun. NewCath 24-Mayfield 17.

  6. "Much of the time, Yeagle won state championships with inferior talent ..."

    Yeagle is a tremendous coach, no doubt, but I have some trouble with that statement. You can't tell me that, during their great run, Beechwood's talent level wasn't consistently among the best in Class A.

    Sure, the Harrodsburg teams of that era may have had more big-time talent, but was it better across the board than Beechwood's?

    Sometimes it works both ways, too ... I still think the Beechwood team that lost to Mayfield in the 1995 title game was probably the better team.

    Athletically, overall, I'd say that NewCath was better than Beechwood many times when they played. Yeagle took his athletes and put them in better positions to take over a game See Berger and Wulfeck throug Menetry. Overall, however, I'd say that they beat teams that they shouldn't have more than any other team, at least in NKY (i.e. CovCath)

  7. What year did these two graduate? :D

    Eviston graduated in '97 and, yes, he would have started over PJ Sauer. Smith in '02, and he would have started after Gino graduated, and, if you are to believe Mueller who coached him in the All-Star game, should have been more highly recruited. Just to make you feel better, those two are from Ft Thomas just like Diehl.

  8. Where is Slinging Sammy going to end up for College ball? I am sincerely asking, I haven't heard.

    I have no clue personally. I don't see how he would be DI. I'd say maybe D-II or NAIA. He's very athletic and has a decent arm strength. I think his height and playing at 1A are two bigs negatives against him. Look at Jeff Smith and Eddie Eviston. Jeff was a very good QB and has done nothing but get bigger and better at Georgetown. At a different high school, a bigger school, he had the chance to be DI. Same with Eddie as a safety coming out of High School. Playing 1A hurts. You're talking about two QB's that would have started at any school in NKY their senior years and they didn't get much attention.

  9. As long as Kiernan is healthy, I know that NewCath's front 7 is very stout. They have a lot of speed on the field. They are not very heavy, their heaviest D-Lineman is maybe 250. On offense, they are very fast. They are not the best smash mouth team, but they spread the field and run out of the no huddle. Canafax is their best receiver, but LCA took him away on Friday and rolled their coverages to him. Bueter and Horan took advantage of it. One thing that concerns me is that they haven't been involved in a close game since the Bellevue mudfest about a month ago. That's about the gist of it. If they control the tempo like they did against Bellevue and LCA they are very hard to beat. Diehl is a very good QB, very experienced. He's obviously the key to the team. As he goes, so goes NewCath

  10. So, what is this I hear about NCC fans cheering every time they got updates about the Highlands game? And almost erupted when the final score of the Highlands game was announced? :sssh:

    Thought NKY would be pulling for each other?

    When I was there I didn't hear much from the NewCath fans, I heard a lot of cheering from the Lexington fans. I think some people were confused.

  11. Let's count here. Those teams moved down for the 1999 season. 1999, 2000,2001,2002,2003,2004,2005. Seems like 7 years to me.

    Cripes, ok, in '97 we beat Bourbon Co. in the regular season finale before they went on their run in the playoffs. Beechwood smoked us and beat the future AAA champ in the process. There's one year that Beechwood would have won state regardles if Mayfield, Bardstown, or Danville were in. You can count '96 as well. '94 would have been a great game between Beechwood and Danville. '91 and '92 Beechwood was one of the best teams in the state regardless of class. There's 2 more. I'll give you '93 and '95 because obviously Bardstown won that year. They won in '99 and '04. So there's six state championships that I'm sure they would have won, one they had a very good chance to win and one that they wouldn't have. So he only has 6. Still a great career.

  12. Should have turned the program over to Bill Morgan 5-7 years ago. Very hardworking dedicated individual who has given a lot of years to NCC and has worked for the same type of inadequate compensation as Schneider.

    I'm not sure that Mr. Morgan would have wanted it. He's a wonderful man, but he's very unassuming. I don't know. He may very well have wanted it and would have done a great job. (I understand your bias with Mr. Morgan). I don't know, there are a lot of good people that would like to be the Coach at NewCath. It's a job like Beechwood's in terms of talent reloading, the pay obviously isn't as good. In terms of turning it over period, he's already turned over play calling duties. What's the difference?

  13. There are a great many NCC fans hoping there won't be a next year for the Coach. Hopefully he gets at least his 300th and finally realizes it's time to turn it over to someone else.

    As for the record I suppose there is something to be said about longevity. I've always felt Coach Schneider was a fairly decent coach but IMO not on the level of say Mike Yeagle, Dale Mueller, Mike Murphy, Owen Hauck, Homer Rice in Northern Ky or some of the other coaches around other parts of the state.

    Terrific career, I suppose that is a matter of opinion. Regardless of what I or anyone thinks of his coaching abilities he does deserve to be commended for all his years of service and dedication to the students of NCC.

    Schneider was every bit as good as Owen Hauk. Check out the head to head record. Coach Schneider has Hauck beat. I respect and really like Coach Hauck, but he was the benefactor of some great athletes. If you can't win a state champioship with Shaun Alexander, I don't think that you can consider yourself a coach on Yeagle or Rice's level.

  14. 49 - 13 LCA over Paris.

    51 - 06 NCC over Paris.

    Of this I am certain: neither NCC nor Beechwood "called off the dogs" in their game. LCA, on the other hand, DID call them off with over 6 minutes left.

    Are you sure that you are certain??? NewCath had their starters out midway through the second quarter. It was 28-0 before I reached my seat at the end of the first quarter. They could have won 100 to 0 if they hadn't called off the dogs.
