  1. Boyd County lost two games to two mountain teams in which they were clear favorites. Ashland lost two games to quality northern Kentucky teams and managed a win against a good Louisville team. Giving Boyd the "benefit of the doubt" is hilarious, especially considering Ashland blew out the team that blew out Boyd County. Boyd County was and still is my pick to win the region, but they should not be the "one" right now. I guess how you perform during the "week" has no bearing on "weekly" rankings. Hey, Devil, I appreciate the work you put into this but don't let your disdain for the Tomcats keep you from being objective. Yes, I believe Boyd will end up on top but they are a struggling group right now and clearly not the top team in the 16th at this point in time. Heck, I would be more comfortable putting Fleming at the one right now versus Boyd. You're just rewarding them for mediocrity. Not that these rankings mean anything but if we're going to play the "weekly" game then do it from a "weekly" perspective, not how you or I think the region will end up at the end of the season.
  2. Didn't see this one coming. Congrats to Pike County Central.
  3. Just finished watching this game. My thoughts; first of all, if you consider yourself to have one ounce of basketball "fandom" in your body, go to mytowntv.com and watch this one. Going into the game I couldn't have named one player on either team, I just wanted to watch a high school game. This one didn't disappoint. Definitely a fun game and a clinic on character by both teams; Greenup being down 31-3 and finishing the game by outscoring Mason 65-43, and then Mason pulling out the win after Greenup closed to within three points in the 4th quarter. In the end the best team won but Greenup added a new fan. Another game or two like this and I may have to travel to the "Greenhouse" for a live viewing.
  4. I quit watching the livestream a few minutes into the game because it looked like an average middle school team playing a good high school team. Very surprised by the final score, I may have to go back and watch the rest of the game.
  5. I don't see the image of Ashland, Highlands, and Lexington Christian in KCD's mirror. Even though losing to these teams rewarded Raceland with road games in the playoffs via RPI, they are now reaping the benefits on the field. KCD appears to be a quality team, Raceland is just too much this season.
  6. Not a Raceland fan or a dis-fan here. As a program, I agree, they are not in the same league as Pikeville. However, as a team, this year they beat Pikeville. So yes, at least for this year they should be mentioned in the same league as Pikeville. In my opinion it's a two horse race, and what do those two horses share in common, they played better teams and elevated their game by doing so. If Sayre beats Raceland then more power to them, I'll be one of the first to congratulate them. But I'm not planning on eating crow just yet.
  7. The talented QB for Sayre will will connect in the end zone a time or two but in the end Raceland puts this one away quite comfortably. The Sayre schedule is not the fault of the football players. The administration needs to "schedule up" in order to put their kids in a position to compete in these games. All they achieved with the schedule was to guarantee (via RPI) the last game of the season would be at home. I mean no disrespect to Coach Pennington or the program, your kids just need to see strength and speed before the playoffs in order to compete with the Raceland and Pikeville's of this world.
  8. True, he is a beast. The Tomcats are very young, including the rider, who is a freshman. A grown man and a kid, literally and figuratively. Good luck to Cov Cath, with all the talk centered around Boyle and Corbin, I hope to see the Colonels crash the party. The young Tomcats also played a nice game and have a bright future. Definitely nothing to hang their heads about.
  9. Ashland has a quality offense, they will score a time or two. Their defense, sans one or two games, has been porous. Their kicking game allows short fields which puts even more pressure on the "bend but don't break" defensive philosophy. It would be a stretch to say they have a better defense that Beechwood. I hope you're right but I don't see it in this one. Covington Catholic rolls somewhere in the 42-14 range.
  10. I’ll watch the game tomorrow on livestream, but from what I saw at the stadium, it was at best, damp.
  11. I guess it depends on the definition of mud…As always though, whether dirt, wet grass, or mud, it was the same for both teams.
  12. Mud?? There was no mud at all. There was a light misty rain for a few hours before the game which could’ve made the field a little slick. But mud? No.
  13. As an Ashland fan I hate to see that even if it means a win or a loss. The kid needs to keep his head up and realize there were many plays that could have changed the outcome. Could've gone either way, just like last week for the Tomcats. Seemingly one play made the difference, but in reality, you just don't know.
  14. Slight chance of light showers in the afternoon with temps in the upper 60's to low 70's. The field is still in good shape and should easily dissipate any moisture that falls today. Should be a fast track.
  15. All Ashland home games are streamed on Mytowntv. Just click on the Ashland link on the website and you’re good to go.
  16. That's definitely me, I was doing that at the beach a few weeks ago. I got frustrated and went to the local JFL game to count mouthpieces dangling from helmets. 😁
  17. Many kids wear mouth guards not attached to helmets. That's fine. Same thing all the way up through the NFL. My issue, as I stated earlier is the traditional mouth guard hanging from the helmet. If it's attached it should be in your mouth, not dangling like you see on almost every snap in the NFL, especially at the receiver positions?? At least in the JFL kids are told to put it back in, as they always have been for decades, by coaches, refs, etc. The difference is today some kids are doing it, not out of forgetfulness, but imitation, and they begrudge being corrected because they are trying to copy the look of their NFL heroes. Heck, I was a little chubby white kid but I still wore my orange Wilt Chamberlain headband because I wanted to be like Wilt every time I played ball or looked in the mirror. That's harmless and funny. But the mouthpiece is a huge safety factor and should be modeled correctly by the professionals, on every snap.
  18. This has filtered down from the NFL. Mainly with receivers and defensive backs. If you never put it in your mouth then don’t hang one from your face mask. Sets a bad example as I see JFL kids imitating the behavior.
  19. Then I would say after watching the Johnson Central film the Simon Kenton coaches are salivating....If Ashland does the same thing and expects different results then they may be in for a tough night.
  20. I'm not sure Ashland was flat on defense. Three down lineman with outside linebacker bodies moving up to the line of scrimmage for a five man front was not a winning formula to stop the Johnson Central run attack. How about an even front? Maybe a split four and then you can move those outside linebackers to line of scrimmage when the situation requires it. I'm a believer in our coaching staff but we needed more bodies in the box Friday night. I do think the Tomcats bounce back this week but if we play another run orientated team and continue to do the same thing we'll make an early exit in the playoffs.
  21. Hey, from a Tomcat fan....Are they are a solid football team? Yes. Do they stand a chance of winning 4A? No. Their last two games of the year against Johnson Central and Simon Kenton should be a challenge and also give us an idea about how much noise they can make in the playoffs.
  22. Offenses, as mentioned earlier, have evolved to very complex systems. High school coaches have to spend an inordinate amount of time on offense which, of course, leaves less time to spend on defense. Defending against these schemes requires more time, not less.
  23. I'm getting old so my memory may be failing me but it seemed like Ashland was number 4 last week. On Friday they beat a perennial power on the road in West Virginia's largest division by three touchdowns. One of the teams moving in front of them this week beat a very good 2A team, the other beat a mildly decent 5A team. These are nice wins but probably not as nice as what the Tomcats did. Don't get me wrong, I have no idea if Ashland is a better team than the two moving in front of them, but if they weren't in front of them last week they shouldn't be in front of them this week. Not that this matters and Ashland, IMO, is still a year away from being a danger to crack the top 4.
  24. I don't think Ashland has the potential to compete with Corbin or Boyle. I do think they have the potential to beat Johnson Central but I'm not convinced they are there at this point in time. They just have too much youth, especially on defense. The thing about young kids is they normally have a steep learning curve. If they continue to develop I think beating Johnson Central is a real possibility. Corbin or Boyle County, not this year.
