Another old wrestling face. Glad to hear from you again and those are some awesome stats. I'd say soon there will be over 100 teams wrestling in the state.

Haven't seen you post in a long time 5star. Glad to have you back. I went to LaRue County. Due to other plans in the beginning of the year and them wrestling out of state I haven't caught LC yet this year so I'll be going to the North Hardin tournament on Saturday. I bet the Dragon will be awesome though. You going?

Plantman, What tournament, if any, are you going to this weekend?

Regionals is on the same weekend I'm going to run a half-marathon or I was seriously considering going to either NKY or the multiple regions they have out at Hoops here in Louisville. My alma mater will walk-through their regions.

Too long my friend, you need to try and make another one soon. I'm honestly not sure when the next good tournament is up there but I know State Duals, Regions, and State are just all around the corner. I'm sure the NKY Region tournament has some exceptional wrestling.

Clyde, when is the last time you've made it to a dual or tournament?

Not sure of the relation but SK still has at least one Cooper left. They are kind of like the Ervins at Union County with most people wondering when they will ever run out. Kevin Cooper is a junior currently ranked 1st. So far this is how he has done at state: 7th Grade - Qualifier 8th Grade - 3rd Place 9th Grade - 2nd Place 10th Grade - State Champion 11th Grade - ??? 12th Grade - ???

Participation has increased since when I was in HS and as plantman mentions youth wrestling in this state has really increased in popularity. Unfortunately, media coverage is very poor as a whole, although there are some papers which do cover it fairly well. I know the LaRue County Herald News gives it just as much if not more coverage than the basketball team. Also, the News-Enterprise does a pretty good job. However, the CJ and HL have almost non-existent coverage... I sometimes wonder how much of this is to blame on the wrestling community though. I'm honestly not that in-touch with the "Louisville wrestling scene" but a lot of that has to do with not knowing how to find out when matches are. So while it may have lost media popularity, I'd say the participation is higher than ever. Also, the quality is getting better with more and more elite wrestlers finding national success.

:lol: :lol: Short of a competitive eating competition you will struggle to find someone that can eat like a former wrestler. Especially the smaller guys who really had to watch their weight.

Did Ryle opt out and thus Simon Kenton was able to get in, or did Simon Kenton qualify and Ryle didn't? Also, does the NKY region use the NKAC tournament to determine it's representatives?

Yep, by the time I came around they'd still have some good wrestlers but they weren't competitive as a team.

Simon Kenton has a few VERY good wrestlers and is setting themselves up to compete at Ryle and Campbell's level. Also, Walton Verona is a new(er) program with a really good coach. Definitely heading in the right direction. It is pretty crazy, unfortunately for Conner they haven't been good in quite some time. We went to a tournament there my JR year. Still remember that tournament vividly -- I had been battling the flu the entire week so while I had no trouble making weight -- I was very weakened. My first match of the day was a kid from my district (districts have been abolished) who I pinned multiple times throughout my career. I wrestled the worst match of my career and lost to him which left Coach "not pleased", to say the least. However, I did come back to get 3rd, also pinned a kid in a surfboard in route to doing so.

Do you follow along any now? I've heard talk that Boone County may be getting a program again.

All this wrestling talk has gotten me nostalgic for the old days when BGP had a very active wrestling community. I'd love to start getting some more life into this forum so I figured I'd start with finding out how many people we have that follow along and how actively they follow.

NKY is sending SK and Campbell County, correct?

Cael Sanderson left Iowa State to coach at Penn State and I think that Iowa State is now really down for their standards, Penn State conversely won the title last year and should be right there with the "cream of the crop". I'd also add Minnesota. Regarding the older brother Stephen, I'm not sure he is quite on that level but he seems to be always ranked close to the top 20 (though I believe he has dropped off since he quit wrestling this year) at his weight class. So that puts him still at what I'd consider the "high D1" level. The younger kid, Austin, if he continues to develop as he has -- then he could attain that level. By all accounts he is a top prospect for his age level. I should add that since KY rarely has "elite" prospects I don't follow wrestling recruiting or national rankings as closely as I should. One other aside, Mark Hall, an 8th grader -- who wrestled in KY two years ago as a 7th grader -- is currently ranked #4 in the country at 145lbs!!! Very, very impressive and to my knowledge having that much national success as a middle school wrestler is completely unheard of.

They are both nationally ranked wrestlers and would be two of the better, if not best college wrestling prospects to ever wrestle in this state. I'd think they could both wrestle at most, if not any Big 10 school which is the cream of the crop. Until Kyle Ruschell went to Wisconsin, I believe no Kentucky wrestler had ever went to a Big 10 school on a scholarship.

I believe some of the national tournaments, especially the in-season ones require you to be affiliated with a high school team. Not sure how many they would be able to participate in.

According to the rules that wouldn't have mattered though. Under KHSAA Bylaw 6 as long as they meet one of the "Discretionary Exceptions for Waiver" outlined in Section 2 but also don't fall into the "Specific Restrictions Resulting in Denial of Waiver" outlined in Section 3 then they are eligible for a transfer. As I've said before, I think they most likely do meet the "BONAFIDE CHANGE IN RESIDENCE" addressed in 6.2, although I think many would argue that the following "Discretionary Exception" would apply: c) If the change in schools is motivated in whole or part by a desire to participate in athletics at the new school; I can see legitimate cases being made for the ruling to go either way. Either way, I do not believe the children are at fault so I hope for their sakes they are able to compete. But more importantly, hopefully they can find a school where the problems that have followed them in the past stay away.

Who you got? I like for LaRue to narrowly edge Union; though if the Myers brothers get eligible this may change.

I would say it's very possible that this happened: a) BONA FIDE CHANGE IN RESIDENCE- The period of ineligibility may be waived if there has been a bona fi de change in residence by the parents and student that precedes a student’s change of schools. For purposes of this bylaw, a bonafide change of residence means the moving of the permanent residence of the entire family of the student and the student’s parents from one school district or defined school attendance area into another school district or defined school attendance area prior to a change in enrollment of the student. A student who becomes emancipated does not have a bona fide change of residence by virtue of his or her emancipation and change of residence for purposes of this bylaw. But, once you get to 6.3 there are reasons for denial, one of which I think they most definitively meet. Sec. 3) Specific Restrictions Resulting in Denial of Waiver Satisfying of one of the exceptions (Section 2, a through i) shall not be considered valid and a waiver of the period of ineligibility shall not be granted: c) If the change in schools is motivated in whole or part by a desire to participate in athletics at the new school; I do not know enough about previous KHSAA rulings on transfers but I believe this move is motivated ENTIRELY "by a desire to participate in athletics at the new school." Hard to see it as anything but that.

I still can't find a definitive answer regarding their eligibility for this year.
