Tough loss for our guys, as we were a pair of free-throws, and at one point a single rebound away from putting this one in the win column.  However for the second time in our last two outings, Scott and now Highlands, we come up short.  Free throws played a huge role in this one, as the Birds connected on 37 for 44, with Nate Vinson hitting on 20 of 21, while our Mustangs nailed 24 of 34, a 13 point advantage to the visitors.  Vinson ended up with 48 points on the night.

Mason Sepate answered with 30 points.  Brandon Bezold put up 16 with four 3s.  Keegan Gulley, our football quarterback, hit a trio of 3s off the bench for 11 points, and Anthony Kruse was one rebound short of a triple-double with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists.  In addition to Vinson, Seth Ryan scored 21, and William Herald 20, while Brody Benke contributed 10.  With the win the Birds improve to 17-6,and the Mustangs fall to 12-7.

I'm thinking that Vinson's 48 may have been the most scored and the Birds' 106 the most ever scored in this facility.

Highlands won the JV game 59-54 despite our Sophomore gunslinger, Parker Mulberry, nailing six 3-pointers.  He then came back and nailed a pair of them in the feature event.

Birds Freshmen big over our greenies.

Next up for our Mustangs is the All "A" State Tournament with a Thursday night 6:30pm date with Hazard.

Great summary.  We had the Conner over Newport 2OT, but part of me sorry we missed this one ha.  But Scott Draud has the 9th region record against Holmes and put up 69.  Maybe 2nd for HHS with 48 for Vinson.  After that Sam is now Nathan's brother. lol

  2. Big 33rd district game tonight in Union as the Cougars take on the Raiders.  Conner coming off a shocking blowout loss to Grant County and Ryle a lost to Walton-Verona.  Who gets back on track in this seeding game?  You can watch both the boys (6:00) and the girls (8:00) on (859) Sports Radio!  And let's all not forget @B-Ball Fanas he goes through some rough times and needs our thoughts and prayers.  Trust me he's fighting harder than anyone we will watch tonight.

I Thought ncc played bellvue tonight?

Yes my apologies to Bellevue.  I was actually out of town until about an hour ago and was told it was NCC and I didn't check myself.   Should have said NCC/Bellevue winner.    Lots going on.  It was not intended to disrespect Bellevue, but that was a dumb lazy mistake on my part.  Been a long two days.  Coach Hicks please accept my sincere apologies and I promise (859) Radio will make it up to  you.

  4. Ok this is getting bigger and better.
Not only are we very excited to announce we will be streaming audio and video of the Newport at Beechwood All A Boys tournament game on Tuesday 1/10 at 8:00 on 859SportsRadio.com!! Join Mark Wehry and Doug Schloemer with the call and hopefully Zoe Collins on camera!! (859) Radio will ALSO be broadcasting the NCC and St. Henry game at 6:00!!! I feel like Garth Brooks adding shows!!  Both teams have suffered some pretty big injuries to a key player, but should still be a barn burner.  Also Coach Dave Faust inches ever so close to Coach Kenney Shields all time 9th Region record of 460 wins and is sitting on 456.

This game feels differently to me, as a "no dog in the fight guy", after Conner rolled into Holy Cross last night and won by 20.  I realize Conner and Highlands have different styles, and I do think Highlands plays in such a way that could allow Holy Cross the freedom to get up and down with them and make it a track meet, but I can't get past last night's result in thinking about this game tonight.

We'll certainly learn a lot about HC and Coach Sorrell tonight, in terms of how they bounce back and how the Indians play tonight.  I expect the building will be jammed, so the Tribe should be buoyed by that as well.

I'll take Highlands by 6-8 and both teams eclipse 85 points.

Not sure I have seen in person three players with 20+ like Conner had.  Lohr 23, Kramer 22 and Hamilton 20.

Not sure they are that different.  Conner hit 11 threes in the first half and went 15/26.  The 9th region record is Bellevue with 19.

  7. I've had this one circled for a while and so happy we are streaming this game live from Lloyd Memorial.  Lloyd with D1 bound EJ Walker and NKU bound Jeremiah Israel and on the Newport side Marquez Miller, James Miller certainly D1 caliber and new addition Jabari Covington, who after one game, already one of the most electrifying players in the region.  Taylen Kinney may still be trying to come back from a knee injury, but this one is going to be a really fun game to watch and as much talent on one court in a while.  Just go to 859SportsRadio.com and join Mark Wehry and Doug Schloemer for all the action.

    @859Radio

Comments? I believe you have done video broadcasts at Beechwood, correct?

Also, I know local TV has broadcasted games from Beechwood.

I love going to Beechwood and broadcasting.  Working with Ryan Booth and their support staff makes it one of my favorite places to be.  And the Hailey Noah concession stand !! I respect Beechwood's reasons for not streaming.  If they change their minds, I would be the first one on Beechwood Road to broadcast.  Mike Murphy and Mark Talley do such an amazing job broadcasting Beechwood sports on internet radio, they make you feel like your there and paint the picture you can't see with your eyes.  This has the potential to be a very good game.  Good luck to both teams and pretty darn awesome to have NKY in the state finals regardless.

  9. Great job on the preseason top 10 and teams and players @B-Ball-fan.  This is by no means supposed to be accurate.  There's not a person alive qualified to do this sight unseen before a game is even played.  This thread is supposed to get the discussion going and you've done a great job in doing that.  Let me refer to the NCAA Football preseason top 10.   Clemson, Notre Dame and Texas A&M were ranked 4, 5 and 6.  They are now 9, 18 and Unranked.  These are experts from AP.  There will be surprise teams moving up and moving down.  Kids will come out of nowhere and not show up.  I agree CCH is #1 until they prove they aren't.  But I know one thing, this region is full of coaches that can coach their butts off and when they win it's never a shock.  Let's go!!!
