  1. Well, sorry to say we have an update for our viewers, but still good news for our listeners for the Ryle at LexCath game Friday night. With Prep Spin streaming the game covering the game and an assumption by LexCath that we were doing audio only, we were informed we cannot provide video of the game. But we're so excited to be covering an out of town game to start the season and it being such an interesting and fun game, Kevin Connor and Mark Wehry will broadcast audio only. We're thankful to be working with the staff at LexCath so we can bring out fans in the (859) this game and we promise to paint the picture like you were there. Tune in to 859SportsRadio.com for the game which starts at 7:30.

Am I out of line or is NKY football always overrated? I know this is regional poll but you guys get on here and an argue about who is the best of a sub par  geographical region with one of the highest populations of the entire state.  Year after year I see this thread, top ten in NKY. Outside of Beechwood and Cov Cath none these teams are ever a factor in their class. Name a team not Cov Cath or Beechwood from NKY that has done anything significant in the last 20 years.

Dixie went to the 6A finals in 2014.

  3. Not many know this fun fact but I was the MVP of the first ever Holy Cross Indian soccer team that played in the fall of 1981 and spring of 1982.  The following year, Holy Cross made one of their best hires in school history with Doug Graham as their soccer coach.   He was there 25 years and had an incredible run of winning 3 straight regional titles.  Then HC started football and haven't really come close to winning a boys soccer regional since.  HS Football is wonderful, but can take a toll on other fall sports.

I actually believe the ref made the correct call.  I think I was listening to @859Radio during the 9th Region games and they referenced this rule during their broadcast.  The Possession arrow DOES NOT change until the Ball comes into PLAY, which is determined by touching another player other than the thrower.

Therefore, your example above the ref was correct when the possession arrow did not change b/c of a 5 sec violation since the violation was a violation with the ball NEVER coming into play.

Now I would say the terminology I would argue with is the phrase he used "failed to complete the possession".....that was a bad choice of words b/c that would make you believe that the in bound passer had to make a completed possession.....instead I would have state "ball never came into play touching another player"

Can we phone Gene Steratore?  He hasn't been busy these last few weeks.

This was explained to me a long time ago.  Watch whoever is in charge of the arrow.  It does not flip until the ball is released from the inbounder.

  5. Tonight the Holmes Basketball program will be honoring those a part of the rich history of William Grant/Lincoln Grant High School.  They will be taking on the Pendleton County Wildcats.  It's no coincidence that this game will welcome former Holmes player and assistant from the 2009 state champions team, Sam Elsbernd, as he makes his first return to Holmes as head coach of the Wildcats.  Grant produced arguably the most storied player in the history of basketball Tom Thacker.  Tom is the only player in history to win an NCAA Championship (UC Bearcats '61, '62) and an NBA Championship with the Celtics and an ABA championship with the Indiana Pacers.  Tom became the first African American head coach at the University of Cincinnati and led the Lady Bearcats from 1974-1978.  Tom earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees from UC and became a teacher.  William Grant won 9th regional titles in 1958, 1959 and 1961.  The game tonight (2/18) can be seen live on The (859) Sports Radio at 7:30.

That St Henry v Lloyd game is going to be awesome!  I think you just throw out their first meeting, looks like Lloyd wanted to save their shots for the next game when they played Highlands and shot lights out!

And Lloyd will be healthy.  Loved the Kaiser kid for St. Henry when we did their game at Lloyd on 2/1.  Going to be a battle, which is why we will be there.  One of the best semi-final district games in the state I feel.

If someone could explain Highlands to the rest of us, it would be great.  Great result one night (since they've been fully stocked), head-scratcher the next.

Congrats to Coach Richey and the Birds, this is a very nice win to head into districts with.  They will play Bellevue, at Bellevue, looking to avenge their 1st loss to them, in the District semis.

Ludlow needs to regroup quickly before playing the Lady Cru in the 34th semis.

Injuries and having to play lots of underclassgirls, including 8th graders.

I know that you’re just playing with me old buddy, but I’ll humor you.

I look at the whole body of work, and while the good ol’ Tigers got a fluky, however impressive win over the Dixie Red Colonels on Jan. 18th, they also lost to these 9th Region teams:

    Ryle

    Lloyd

    Covington Catholic

    Holy Cross 2 times

    Boone County

    Conner

    And more recently

    Newport Central Catholic

    Holy Cross

    St. Henry

And even more recently when it was extremely important for them to get the win, they lost to the (10-16) Bulldogs of Holmes 70-60.

Those losses piled up to reflect more who Beechwood really is while losing 7 of their last 8 games, 11 of their last 13, and 14 or their last 17, and have been ranked accordingly.

    Ok, was just curious. ha
