  1. That is a great point, the coverage of High School basketball just isnt what it was back in the 70's and 80's, when I played there were articles every week on teams, players and big games were hyped so if someone was a star Jack Givens - Darryl Griffth everyone would know and you couldnt get a ticket to a big game. But still our state isnt producing the top line players like we used to.
  2. Thanks, never got to see him but heard stories about him from!! I sure he packed the Owensboro Center (not sure of the name) back in those days.
  3. Good point, but Indiana is still producing Top 10-15 ranked players on the national level. How many has Kentucky produced in the last 25 years. Indiana has dominated KY so much in the summer all-star series in past 15 years that no one even cares about it anymore, in the 1970's and 1980's it was a big deal. Last year Indiana produced Trey Lyles and James Blackmon just off the top of my head. Alot of the players I mentioned in my thread were top 10 - 15 players in the nation. Kentucky has produced some nice players who have gone on to have nice college careers and even the pros but most of them were not not highly recruited, Shelvin Mack for example in the NBA but he didnt have major colleges beating down his door. Name the last great University of Kentucky player from the state of Kentucky.
  4. Was discussing this question and I'm not sure of the answer. I must preface that I played High School ball at Bryan Station in the early 1980's so I might be a little biased. But I don't see any what I call legends of the HS school game being produced in this state anymore. Still a lot of good players but not like it used to be. Below is my list with some comments of who I truly consider legends, guys that if they showed up at the playground, summer league, high school game back in their day or ever today would have people telling stories of some game they played in or how big high school ball was back in the day. I will start with the 1950's because King Kelly Coleman is the probably the 1st true HS legend in the state. 1960's - I'm sure there were more but I would assume Wes Unseld was would be consider a truly great player in this state. Now the 70's - some I saw as a young kid growing up in Lex., some by word of mouth from guys who played against them or saw them play. '74 Jack Givens (Bryan Station), James Lee (Henry Clay) when they would play the regular season games they would be moved to Memorial Coliseum '76 Darrel Griffith, Bobby Turner (Male) - Need I say more anyone that saw them play can tell the younger generation what it means to play above the rim. '78 Jeff Lamp (Ballard), Jerry Eaves (Ballard) - duo that led a great Ballad Team '79 Charles Hurt - Seen him throw down a dunk on Mel Turpin that I believie the rim is still rattling Kenny Higgs - (Owensboro) - Not sure what year he graduated but I have heard the old guard in Lex tell stories about his game '79 Dirk Minniefield (Lafayette) - most athletic guard I have ever seen personally play in High school was rated one of the top two guards in the nation along with Isiah Thomas - Also lead a great high school team '79 Mel Turpin -( Bryan Station) - maybe not a legend out of High School but the state has produce many 7 foot players of his talent in the last 30 years. '80 Dicky Beal (Covington Holmes) - Quickest guard and best player I have ever seen in the NKY area '81 Manual Forrest - Moore - This guy was a true HS legend, was a top 5 player in the nation. Best high school player I saw in Kentucky in during my 3 years on Varsity Bryan Station. "83 - Winston Bennet (Male) - top 5 player in the nation, plus who can forget the hair, we played him my senior year in front of 12,000 at the coliseum in lex. '85 Tony Kimbro - Great athlete, top player on 1 team in nation at 1 time. '86 - Rex Chapman (Apollo) - Need I say more '88 Richie Farmer (Clay County) - some of the greatest state tournament performances ever '89 Allan Houston (Ballard) - One of the best guards ever produced in the state. KY still produces good players but not many of the caliber I have listed and I haven't come up with a good reason why. Also, there haven't been many great teams like you used to see 30 years ago in this state. Save that for another thread.
  5. First of all I was not dismissing him at all, I personally wouldn't trade him for any kid in NKY based on: A- His ability to defend and his desire to defend B- His Basketball IQ C- His scoring ability I believe he has all 3 combined at a higher level than any player in the area. But I was mainly talking about him playing a a high D1 level, I know he has D1 offers and I believe he will play D1 but if a kid receives a D1 offers in 9th grade it is only natural to want to see if his game develops to where he could play at UK,UC, UofL, Xavier etc. level. If he does not grow beyond 6'1 then he will probably have to be a point guard at a High D1 level, if he has as quick as 1st step as you say and can finish at the rim against the highest level of competition then he should end up at the high level d1 level because he will have the intangibles to go along with physical talent needed to play at that level.
  6. If Saint Henry only had 19 TO's it sure seemed like 30, bottom line with this game is St. Henry had no continuity on offense due to CC pressure and the pace at which they played. St. Henry should have beat the press 1st and then slowed the game down by running an offense that would make CC have to play defense for a period of time before a shot was taken. Also, St. Henry should have play ed the game inside/out running their offense thru the Kunstek kid. Too many ill advised and quick shots.
  7. VH is an excellent defender, it will be interesting to see how he develops in the next 3 years. He has a nice mid-range game but at his height that doesn't translate that well at a high d1 level(even tough at NKU level of competition). Also, he isn't overly quick or explosive to the basket. But he does have a high basketball I-Q which gives him an advantage over alot of players who just rely on talent. His defensive I believe is the one of the biggest reasons Cov. Cath cut down the nets last year.
  8. Both are nice players - at this point I would agree Pangallo is the better around player but the Snapp is kid is a very nice scorer. For small point guards to go Division I is tough task but you only have to have 1 school like you. Both kids would have a tough time defending on the DI level.
  9. No, but Louisville has alot more athletes than most of the schools you play on the way to state titles. Louisville HS football has more talent than any other area of the state and you dont have to play against any of them. HHS has very good athletes and would compete well against them but it would be a much tougher road to go competing for state titles against kids from the Ville. Just petition the KHSSA to have HHS move up to 6A and we will see how many state championship you win. Don give me that size of the school because you are always touting how well you play against the Cincinnati schools. I doubt you would have won very many 6A titles in the last 15 years, maybe a few but not near as many due to having to play the talent from Louisville.
  10. I believe Dixie could have played well against and maybe even beaten Bryan Station and I watched HHS just barely beat them. HHS is a great program that was lucky to get one of the most innovative coaches in KY High School History. But 1 thing HHS has never or very seldom had to do on their way to a state championship is beat any athletes from the city of Louisville, which is a big advantage.
  11. The only way for 6A schools in NKY to compete with Trinity would be for the top players at Beechwood and CCH to go to Dixie(also pull some athletes from Holmes). For Newport Catholic , HHS top players to go to Campbell County. For Ryle and Cooper which are 5 miles apart to designate 1 as the football school and let all the top players go to one school. Then you would have teams that could compete Trinity on given years. NKY has too many smaller schools that have good programs which hurt the bigger schools. Kids in NKY are very dedicated and work hard just like the kids in Louisville but winning like Trinity comes down not only to dedication but an abundance of talent.
  12. How many state championships do Male, St. X and Manual have in the past 10 years, seems like the 6A is dominated by 1 school, Super district seems more like super 1. Trinity is an all-star team with great coaching who can reload almost every year. I dont blame the talented kids for wanting to go there, eveyone wants to win!! When Trinity had a down year (last year) I didnt see St. X, Male or Manual win the state it was a public School Scott County. I say seed 6A and we can watch Trinity beat one of the 3 Louisville teams or Scott County in the 6A title, either way Trinity will probably be the champs.
