  1. I think most programs lose kids in the following points:

    1) After 6th grade - especially if they are playing MS... Not a lot of 6th graders are ready for MS football. Not ready for the contact, not ready for conditioning, etc. IMO, almost all 6th graders should play youth league.

    2) B/W 8th & 9th - You lose those 8th graders who didn't play as much as they'd like. One school of thought is, "If they aren't playing they must not be that good." However, kids' bodies change a lot from 14-17 years of age. You never know what a kid will or won't develop into.

    3) After Freshman/Sophmore Year. I put this one together, because it all depends upon the expectations. If a freshman realizes that a lot of playing time is unlikely, and accepts it & works, then they typically stick around another year. After the Sophmore year is critical because the kids actually kind of know what is going on, they realize they have improved, but may be frustrated with playing time...

I think 1 & 2 would be alleviated somewhat by more teams, and thus more opportunities to play. The thing that middle schools did was eliminate the K-8 school - thus eliminating youth (12-14 yrs old) teams affiliated with multiple elementary schools in a district.

#3 is all about what you do with those young guys... Do you beat them to death on the scout team? Do you have a full freshman/JV schedule? Do they have dedicated coaching or are they standing around? So on and so forth.

I agree !! Well said !! I think it is very important that the JV kids , or backups and freshman squads and some cases froshmore . Should have a full schedule to play and opportunity to develop and utilized in practices . The teams that can manage that, will keep numbers at a higher end.

  2. Who is the better back London or Pleasant? I can't wait to see how they use Perrin and see how good the big boys are Rice and Tucker.
Watching practice last night , I can say I was impressed with the enthusiasm and the over all Moral . The team was moving around pretty well during conditioning !! Was impressed with Rice and Tucker on how them big boys can move for the size they are . I believe they play SK next week 7on7.
  3. I feel it to be a productive thing as long as you have the right coaches and teachings in place . Fundamentals and proper techniques. In my opinion it would be very benefical if the middle school feeds into an individual high school , that the coaching staff is on the same page from top to bottom . That way they are taught the offense and defense and already know the expectations what the coaches expect once they enter high school. This way the high school coaches aren't forced to recoach what kids should of been taught in the development years. This also builds numbers and team work.

  4. No worries. Scott should be just fine this year !! Love their chances in this district and the opportunity to see Dan take this program to another step up the ladder that they have not yet experienced . It all starts back Monday !! This 2015 team could break some school records !!

  5. Wow....your inability to comprehend is stunning....the big dogs in FOUR A have left the yard for FIVE A. Scott is now in FOUR A. Conner and Cooper are SIX A. CovCath and Highlands are FIVE A, and they are the big dogs I was CLEARLY referring to. I am not a complete homer, I have respect for many teams unlike you.

So cool !! If Scott comes out over Conner this season and Dixie they beat a 5A and a 6A local school !!

  6. Probably the big news related to this is the new look 4A will have with the ups and the downs in the 'old 4A' on the east side. Seems like an fresh opportunity for some programs in 4A = both east and west sides of the bracket.

Yes . I agree 4A should be full of opportunity !!

  7. I am not trying to say they arent a good running team. I am just saying that that style offense will only take them so far (otherwise teams would still run it). My understanding is that the Eagles are on the verge of being much improved. If they want to take it to the next level and compete with the other team in the area for players then they should consider changing up the offense some. Ever something like the wishbone would give running backs good options with a fullback yet still have wideouts for passing attack. I want success for the Eagles this season and beyond

The offense that Dan has the team run , was what was best with the key talent that he had when taking over and it has prooved to be successful. I agree , that some passing has to be evolved out of this formation and I know it can be . I believe the issue , in the past was QB confidence and Development. I also believe the blocking and having the right personal to pass to has been a factor. All that being said , I am confident that they have the talent on the field this season , to run , pass, block, and I think Scotts offense will put up points.

  8. I have noticed a fair number of mentions regarding the running game for the Eagles and I think someone said they run a 1950's offense. Is there any hope of changing up formations at all moving forward? On average, how often did they pass per game last year? Changing things up a bit may help determine how good this team can be

The offense is designed to run the ball And there were passing plays developed out of this formation , and unfortunately, in the few times that they attempted , the QB seemed rushed and not comfortable . I think this season they may have found away to balance the offense out and utilize the talent . The key this season will be the blocking . With this style offense all 11 guys have to block .

  9. Which games are folks seeing as W's and L's on their schedule?

Prediction would be difficult to say for sure. I see the NewCath , Dixie, Conner, Bourbon ...to be very good games . I could see those games going either way . I see the Eagles Winners in the rest of the games . The only loss for sure I could see on paper would be SK . I just feel Scott will be competitive . They could end up above average or 9 and 1 . It just all depends how the stars line up.

  10. So did Highlands get a new lineman that just transferred there?

Who wouldn't want to play lineman for the birds ? The exposure your athlete would recieve , and the new facilities and a winning atmosphere and tradition !!! They teach success !! Highlands has done this year after year !! It is what they do !!

  11. Lol. Can't tell you how many times I've heard kids and adults throw these numbers out there and once they worked out with me they weren't even close. I've heard everything from bench 415 and it was really 275, and rep 225 25 times and it was really 7. Would love to see this, is there a video?
I can not speak for the other athletes , but as far as Gage and his squatting numbers . Yes the numbers are correct and school coaching staff , did video tape it on thier phone at practice.
  12. I know every school obviously does it differently . It depends on the Head Coach in the direction and priorities. I know many coaches who Love the program and wants to win , but loves the kids and wants to see them be successful and win as individuals in life . I think those particular coaches, are the ones that encourage the upper classman to attend camps , why hold back a kid to better himself , or even get exposure to have an education paid for !! No right or wrong answer here .. Like I said ..its a priority thing and personal preferance . I do know many that excuse it

  13. Not sure how anyone can predict what Newports team will do next year with so many question marks right now. Who would have thought Newport would have done as well as they did the last two season's when they hired a coach that no one ever heard of in Matt Schmidt. What if they do it again? Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I have never been a big fan of adults sitting behind a computer predicting the failure or lack of success of high school teenagers. I really hope the Wildcats move forward and build on the short success and culture change that Coach Schmidt brought to the program.

Many of the threads on baseball, basketball, football , predict outcomes of games, seasons , etc. So for you to not like open prediction discussions on sports ? Not sure ? I see bluegrass preps as always having discussions on current events in high school programs. That being said ..I mentioned the struggles the first year out of the gate and so late , with lack of having a coach . Nothing negative was meant by it . Just my opinion ! Good luck to Newport and the programs future moving forward !!
