  1. Celia Pelfrey received a Divison I scholarship offer from Eastern Kentucky University. Congrats to Celia, class of 2020 shooting guard from Dixie Heights.
  2. To each his own but I'd transition to a high five, low five, fist bump or Three Stooges hand gestures
  3. This needs to be a poster! Congrats on the best thing I've ever read on BGP:banana:
  4. That's what they said when Nick Ruthsatz was a sophomore...then he went on to lead them to a state championship. :thumb:
  5. All things come back around. I've seen coach Wendlen run and gun up until the last seconds when she was loaded with JV talent at SK, even calling timeouts with a minute left and up by 20+...and no, it wasn't for substitutions. What comes around goes around. Not to worry, Perkins will get his again some day.
  6. What was the final of the JV game? SK jv has been pretty tough.
  7. Great coaches do not always have the most talented players. I can assure you Stamm has not had the same talent as the top teams in the region so I can't fault him for that unless he starts recruiting :sneaky:.... Richey has had talent but to win the 9th you must have good coaching, lots of talent, and many breaks go your way. HHS has had 2 of the 3 most years in an extremely competitive field.
  8. Tucker? If memory serves she was at Holmes for 8th grade and Turkeyfoot for 7th and 6th.
  9. I suppose I'm scratching my head with Foust being in the top 3 of many. NDA has under-performed to the point they put Winstel on the bench at the end of last season as the wheels were falling off. I hate to say it but this sounds a bit more like a popularity contest. I may not like the way Perkins (Holmes) handles himself but is he a good coach? IDK but he (among others) got his team playing far closer to his teams full potential IMHO. Curious what I'm missing.
  10. It's much like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg? NDA and St. Henry are volleyball powerhouses...which is attractive to other strong volleyball players. Success breeds confidence which breeds success...and so on. I agree that there is no doubt it's beneficial to play at a young age. On the other hand, two of Dixie's strongest players Leah Metzger and Perrin Long didn't play volleyball until 4th and 6th grade respectively. While they are athletic, more importantly they have an amazing passion for the game and are willing to sacrifice more than most for an opportunity at greatness. Those critical elements can't be taught through instruction, but rather possibly modeled by their parents or maybe it's just something that they are born with or likely both. I'm not saying waiting until 4th or 6th grade is ideal by any means, but where there is a will, there is a way. If you look to girls basketball, Highlands has beaten St. Henry the last 200 years or so:) If St. Henry takes the same approach in basketball that they do volleyball will they start beating up on Highlands? IMO Highlands has basketball and football in it's blood. St. Henry has volleyball in it's blood. NDA just has a lot of blood, for now.
  11. To clarify, I did not say you were against para professionals...you just said they were the #1 reason public schools are inferior. My main point I've made is it's the PLAYER first and foremost, as opposed to your coach statement, regardless of how much circling of the wagons you do to massage one of your many previous statements into a different point. I also have both daugthers and sons. My daughter is just as willing as my sons to compete in the neighborhood. I am in fact speaking of football in fort thomas. Congratulations, you broke the code. I'm not sure if it was the "field" or the never ending list of state championship banners that gave that away.
  12. I've been a lifelong resident of Don't Make Excuses. It doesn't matter if you grow up in NKY, California or Maine if you have the desire to play a sport. I didn't just "show up" places and expect players to be there. I took some initiative, picked up the phone and met friends in someone's backyard or at the park. From time to time I even got the long-gone "busy signal" and had to continue to call or worse yet ride my bike over. Life was brutal Mom and Dad didn't have to persuade me to pick up the phone and play ball. I found ways to play just about every sport to get better. Most just need a ball and a wall, yes volleyball included. People have done far more with far less than what these HS athletes have today. To recap, you've gone from "para-professional Coaches being the #1 reason why public schools are so inferior in sports" to private schools get players involved earlier (which most do in volleyball). Those are two drastically different statements. It's still the players that make the biggest difference IMO. I've passed by Highlands in early Feb to see 3-4 players working on the field together...no mom, dad or coach around. That is the #1 reason why they are great.
  13. Great to hear. Sounds like lots of talent in that group!
  14. Have any of these girls mentioned determined where they will go for college yet? I know incoming junior year is big for basketball. I wasn't sure about softball...
  15. Looks like Calvary Christian has been filled. Ryan Neises is the new HC.
  16. Parents/kids will have to be "creative" to get on pace. Outdoor volleyball is great for kids. No doubt volleyball (along with every other sport) is getting expensive to do indoors. When I was growing up we played far more outdoor and/or sand volleyball than indoor. 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4 are all great. The more reps, the better off they'll be.
  17. Just signed her up for a Legacy "developmental session" to keep her skills progressing.
  18. As I was saying, Warriors and Royals are not an option for my 5th grade daughter
  19. FAR more weight has been put on the mention of "unorthodox defense" than intended. My point is this - I've seen the Royals 5th grade team keep a press on when the score was 21-2. It was clear the opponent was not equipped to handle the pressure yet they kept applying pressure resulting in fast break layups. I see many girls play through middle school with that same style and eventually their opponents mature and can now handle pressure that made up 80% of their offense. To each his own, but I don't want my daughter to be in that situation 4 years from now. RCC9 could coach my daughter anytime! Not sure if your daughter goes to Highlands or NCC but both play great basketball. I wonder how those girls that beat her team back in 5th grade are doing:) My main concern as a father of a 5th grader is not getting my daughter a D1 scholarship (not to say that she couldn't someday). My concern is having her love the game, learn the game and continue to develop the skills that puts her in position to be successful in HS and possibly beyond. I can teach her how to hit fast break layups in my driveway.
  20. FWIW, I was simply saying getting coaches outside the school is not even close to the #1 reason why public schools are not as "competitive" as private (as you stated). I do believe you're on the right track regarding volleyball especially at a young age. For the record, there are plenty of public schools (especially in Kenton Co) that fill head coaching positions outside of the teachers lounge. My statement of underestimating players is this...it's not public vs. private. But kids are made up differently. Players decide how much they are going to sacrifice for a chance to be great. I've seen Boone Co basketball players with as much toughness and heart as any private school. And it was because they wanted it more than anything else...and I don't think it had to do with whether or not their coach was a teacher or a paraprofessional.
  21. I think you may be underestimating the importance of players...
  22. I simply know too many players that have not had a good experience with Warriors (harsh) coaching style. I've watched Royal at that age level and while they have been successful on the scoreboard, the focus seems to be on winning by applying unorthodox defenses that create constant fast breaks and run up the score. I'm interested in having my daughter continue to develop fundamentals. Winning will come with development.
