  1. The 2015 thru 2018 alignement might be a factor for CCH and HHS both winnning State

Largest four schools in class 3A

South Warren 413 boys (two yr avg)

    Bourbon County 414

    East Carter 415

    McCreary Central 417.5

    Smallest three class 4A

    Highlands 419.5

    Lexington Catholic 427.5

    Taylor County 428.0

Largest 4 schools in Class 4A

    Madisonville-North 509.5

    Clay County 512.5

    Mercer County 521.5

    Fairdale 524

    Smallest 3 schools in 5A

    Shelby County 525

    Perry County Central 525.5

    Warren Central 529.5

Covington Catholic is at 504.5 - 8 spots from top of 4A and 33 spots from the bottom in 4A

HHS could move to 3A if any of the lower schools move up in enrollment. CCH is more likely to remain in 4A. They have 8 schools with higher enrollment and would have to jump from 504.5 to close to 524 to move up.

However there are no 3A schools in NKY - closest is Mason County HS.

  2. I agree, with Houliston stepping in and an extremely athletic bunch in that class I think the Birds roll once again.

However, what about the current Frosh and Soph's.....is the run for Highlands coming to an end soon?

Frosh and Soph's may not matter - KHSAA alignment may put CCH and HHS in different class. HHS is the smallest 4A school now and with alignment they may drop to 3A (unless KHSAA allows them to move up).

Here is an old address that talks about the first year Highlands was going to participate in it.

Thread Posted 6/16/2102 – Tom Potter Classic 2012

Anybody know what teams are playing in the Tom Potter Classic?

    Cov Cath at Ryle

No mention of H vs T being a part of 2012 on BGP - Also my Internet search turned of no mention of HHS only Ryle and CCH

  4. Highlands Class 4A standing is based on 419 boys in 4 grades average over 2 years. They have around 320 boys in 9 thu 11 based on Ohio ranking. They would fall in DIII Ohio. I believe Elder has 714 boys in the three grades.

Just FYI - KY School Ranking for class

    6A - 1,453 to 705

    5A - 695 to 525

    4A - 524 to 419

    3A - 417 to 331

    2A - 330 to 200

    1A - 199 to 65

Largest NKY school is Simon Kenton 792 boys and them Boone County 790 boys - Ryle lists 770 and Campbell Co. at 746

  5. I think the OHSAA takes 9th, 10th and 11th grade enrollment to determine class. I do not know Highlands enrollment numbers but the OHSAA website has Highlands as a D-II if they were in Ohio.

    2011-2013 OHSAA Tournament Divisions

    Football Schedule

Highlands Class 4A standing is based on 419 boys in 4 grades average over 2 years. They have around 320 boys in 9 thu 11 based on Ohio ranking. They would fall in DIII Ohio. I believe Elder has 714 boys in the three grades.

  6. Highlands would fit squarely in the middle of DIII with roughly 300 male students in top three grades (252 to 350 is Ohio DIII designation) To put both a local and statewide benchmark out there, Turpin is #2 in state ranking and Cincy Northwest HS is number 5 statewide. Both went into tonight undefeated.

Don't expect that you will see either of those teams looking to come to Ft.Thomas anytime soon.

Highlands’s current 4A alignment is based on 419 boys (2yr avg - Grades 9 thru 12). If their average was 417 boys they would be in 3A. They are the smallest 4A school and are ranked 110th in the state for the number of boys.

The number one ranked HS in Kentucky is St X with 1,453 boys and Trinity is second with 1,357 boys (grades 9 thru 12).

Trinity beat Elder 45 to 21

Ohio considers grades 9, 10 and 11 when making divisions – Cincinnati St X has 1,164 boys (Grade 9 thru 11), Colerain has 822 boys, Elder comes in at 714 boys.

Highlands would be in Division III in Ohio based on the number of Boys (grades 9 thru 11) and how they are classified.

Highlands loss to Elder 38 to 24 given Elder's size and pool of boys to draw from made me proud of the guys playing for HHS tonight.

  7. I think that is a good point. If you look at it from a competition point of view, Highlands is clearly better than everyone in N. Ky. CCH and maybe the best 6A team (whoever that is) could challenge Highlands, maybe get a rare win and that is it. I don't think Highlands is a big enough school to play in the GCL. However, it is time to step up the non district schedule another notch and take on those Ohio schools who are just below the GCL. Perhaps an Anderson, Winton Woods, etc.

I agree that Highlands’s size is an school issue when it come to competing with Ohio D I schools year in and year out.

Highlands’s current 4A alignment is based on 419 boys (2yr avg - Grades 9 thru 12). If there average was 417 boys they would be in 3A. They are the smallest 4A school and are ranked 110th in the state for the number of boys.

Highlands would be in Division III in Ohio based on the number of Boys and how they are classified.

Playing one Ohio D I school a year I can see helping the program to prepare for the State Tournament but expecting a school of 419 boys to play a D I schedule year in and year out, is a large challange.

I think Dale has done a good job adding a mix of quality teams that offset the district teams that are not.
