1. This game is important to HHS in that it prepares them for the KY State tournament. HHS has won their district and they know what they are up against in the 4A state tournament.

I know the HHS players want to win and go undefeated and say they beat Elder a GCL team.

However, Elder has more at stake. This is a “district like” game for them and if they lose would affect their seeding and might affect if they get to play in their state tournament. They are at home at the Pit and will play with thousands of Westside fans for support.

This will most likely be the most people HHS will see at a game this year and most of them will not be rooting for them.

I am sure the Elder players and coaches know what’s at stake and will be fired up to go at HHS from the kick off. HHS will have to do a much better job from the start than they have in earlier games this year.

The HHS defense will need to play much better and take on the Elder energy that will be coming at them in their first possessions of play. In Oct. HHS played Harrison Co and then had a week off and then played Homes. It has been awhile since they have had to play hard for 4 qtrs. Also, Elder is likely the best team they will play this season.

I give Elder an edge because of the home field advantage and what they have at stake.

    I hope HHS wins.

  2. I personally think that the Birds will look' date=' offensively speaking, similar to the 1st quarter of the University Christian game. Elder will absorb the clock like a sponge, Houli and co. will see the field sparingly and will need to make every possession count.....the pressure on Houli will, unlike UC, be sustained throughout the contest. Biggest, most anticipated game of the 2013 season.[/quote']

    Stretch Goal Friday

The HHS team focus and primary goal is to win a KY state championship. The Elder game will help HHS in their road to this achievement.

Beating Elder is as I call it a “Stretch Goal” of going undefeated and beating a GCL team.

  3. Agreed that getting more athletes on the field is helpful. I'm simply saying Dale's Birds over the last 5 to 8 years have simply used speed and athletic ability more than any other. Their linemen aren't bulky. Heck, they used to have a kid at OT who was a 100M sprinter. They had a 150 pound DT going against Cincy X. They USE that speed and athleticism more than any other team.

In Dales early years at HHS he felt it was critical to their successful that the players needed to be faster and stronger. He has made that a focused of the program from early on. As the conditioning program began to show its success and more guys wanted to play the ability to platoon was a natural progression.

  4. Does the second cancellation constitute a "boycott" of Highlands by Covington Catholic? Will this prompt other NKY teams to do the same?

Highlands JV only played one NKY team this year Campbell Co. First game of the year for the JV.

HHS 24 at Campbell Co 14

HHS 37 at George Rogers Clark 8

HHS 42 vs Lexington Cath 19

HHS 37 at Cinti Withrow 6

HHS 35 at Lexington Bryan Station 0

    HHS vs Cincinnati Elder

    HHS vs Scott County

It might be that CCH is following not leading a boycott?

  5. Will the lack of JV games hurt Highlands' title chances?

    Is Collins too low?

    What else would you change?

    Highlands Bluebirds - Junior Varsity

Highlands JV 24 Campbell County JV 14 W

Highlands JV 37 George Rogers Clark JV 8 W

    Highlands JV 42 Lexington Catholic 19 W

Highlands JV 37 Cincinnati Withrow (Ohio) 6 W

Highlands JV 35 Lexington Bryan Station 0 W

October 26 at 10:00AM - Highlands JV vs. Cincinnati Elder (Ohio) JV

November 2 at 11:00AM - Highlands JV vs. Scott County JV

Does this HHS JV schedule and record look like the lack of 2 CCH games will hurt the Birds title chances?

Which Schedule (above or below) affects that teams title chances?

    CCH Schedule 2013

Covington Catholic JV 46 vs Boone County JV 6 W

Covington Catholic JV 32 vs Dixie Heights JV 12 W

Covington Catholic JV 22 vs Beechwood JV 15 W

Covington Catholic JV 20 vs Ryle JV 14 W

  6. The NKY smaller river towns close to the large Cincinnati downtown do seem to have there fair share of low income challenges.

Also class size has lowered over time for some.

Bellevue is the 10th smallest 1A school in the state according to the KHSAA at 122 Avg Boys (2yrs)

    Ludlow has 148 Avg Boys

    Dayton has 152 Avg Boys

Beechwood is the 3rd largest 1A school has 196.5 Avg Boys

Also coaching changes in the smaller schools are a factor that play a part in performance. Sometimes it helps and sometimes not so much.

I remember when Bill Baldridge and Charlie Coleman had big positive impacts on the Bellevue program.

I am sure the Avg Boys numbers have changed since they were listed on KHSAA web site since another factor the schools deal with is turnover.

  7. What are we trying to establish by posting the schedules of the JV teams. Most that are truly in the know at HHS have told you repeatedly that they were scheduled to play each other twice this year as they have done some in past years. They were scheduled to play tonight at HHS and that game was cancelled 2 weeks or so ago by CovCath. The second game was also on the schedule and has not recently been added. Agree with many on here that the young kids would like the opportunity to play and show that they can compete as well. 5 and 7 games respectively is not getting that done IMO.

I was interested in comparing the two JV schedules after reading the back and fourth about the cancellation. I would have liked to attended the game today however after seeing the HHS JV schedule I will plan on making the Elder JV match up since its the only home game now on the schedule.

Looks like Highlands JV will be on the road the next 4 out of 5 games.

I do not have a problem with Cov Cath doing wants best for their program. It looks like Highlands JV has plenty of work ahead of them without having two game with Cov Cath.

  8. Do you know why? Because the first game was supposed to be played today at HHS and the second game at CCH.. The varsity game was played at CCH on Saturday so the JV game would logically be played at HHS today...:thumb:

Sorry - I made a TYPO - the CCH web site shows the game at Home and I typed Away in Error - Sorry.

I caught the error and made an edit in the orginal post but was not quick enough.

  11. Your point being!?

The focus of the season is CCH not JH or PT.

The results from those games should not be seen as anything but working to prepare for CCH. HHS is playing a lot of guys this year more than in the past and they are trying to improve their quality of depth. Playing JH and PT allows the coaching staff time to see how some players will perform against good athletes.

You comment about Oscar Mayer Bologna is somewhat valid in that every current class seems to be the best class per some.

However there is something to the concept that each team is build on the foundation of the ones before it.

  12. Another way to look at the data -

Class 4A has Trinity and St X winning State Titles and when classes were expanded to 6 Classes that continued in 6A

Class 3A had 4 teams winning titles and when the classes expanded 5A and 4A was shared by the same teams that were winning in 3A with the exemption of Cov Cath winning in 2006 and Bell Co winning in 2008. Highlands Boyle Co and Lex Cath all won multiple State Titles. When Highlands was moved from 5A to 4A then you have Bowling Green winning 5A.

Class 2A had Boyle Co win in 2000 and then they moved to 3A and continued. When they left 2A had 5 different teams win Titles. When the class went to 6 Central had dominated 3A and FT Campbell and NCC has won multiple 2A Titles

Class 1A has Danville and NCC winning multiple titles when only 4 Classes. When the classes were expanded to 6 you have Beechwood and Mayfield winning multiple titles.

  13. For comparisons sake, here is a look at the number of teams that have won state titles in each class and have participated in the championship game since going to six classes in 2007. (I readily admit that this isn't the best method for determining best class, but is rather information some might not have)

    Class 1A

    -4 different champions (Beechwood x 2; Mayfield x 2; Lexington Christian; Hazard)

    -5 different state championship participants

    Class 2A

-3 different champions (Fort Campbell x 3; Newport Central Catholic x 2; Covington Holy Cross)

    -7 different state championship participants

    Class 3A

-2 different champions (Central x 5; Paducah Tilghman)

    -5 different state championship participants

    Class 4A

-4 different champions (Boyle County x 2; Highlands x 2; Lexington Catholic; Bell County)

    -9 different state championship participants

    Class 5A

    -2 different champions (Highlands x 4; Bowling Green x 2)

    -6 different state championship participants

    Class 6A

-2 different champions (Trinity x 5; St. Xavier)

    -6 different state championship participants

  14. I was surprised by the amount of available seats we saw on TV. Not to take anything away from a great win for Highlands but I think folks thought their icing might melt :). Good job on adjustments late in the second quarter. Prior to that Houliston was running for his life when if not one, two UC d lineman where hot on his trail.

Once the the o line established a moving pocket and gave their QB time the rout was on. The Highlands moving pocket...lets say that one more time....the Highlands moving pocket. Amazed the rest of the pack hasn't been able to replicate the concept, amongst other consistently successful football strategy.

Good job Birds and congrats on the win!

In the first Qtr from where I sat the stands were full (from the student section to the visitors section)but not packed. My wife started to feel ill from the heat and we had to leave late in the second Qtr. The man infrount of me also left when we did. Finished the game at home in the air conditioning. My daughter in law said the heat affected quite a number of people who had to leave or headed to the shady part of the field.
