Final from Estill last night. This was an excellent game for 2 and 1/2 quarters. Both teams with spurts at moments until Perry pulled away late 3rd and most of 4th.

Notes: #1 Perry County Central took it to the chin this past week, dropping both games they had in the WYMT Food City Mountain Classic, falling 60-43 to North Laurel and 65-63 to Paintsville. Those two losses have ran the Commodores losing streak to 3 straight games. #2 Powell County, after being took to the woodshed to open the season, the Pirates picked up two wins last week, defeating Bluegrass United Home School 100-59 and East Carter 86-75 at the Rowan County KY Bank Challenge. If they get clicking on all cylinders, the Pirates may very well be trouble for a lot of teams this season. Knott County Central who came in at #3 last week, went 2-1 last week in the WYMT Food City Classic, picking up wins over Knox Central 46-44 and Pike County Central 59-52. The loss came to North Laurel 54-46 in the championship game. Hazard split two games last week, also in the WYMT Food City Classic, defeating Paintsville 76-65 but falling to North Laurel 54-43. Wolfe County added two more wins to they're resume this week, defeating Jackson City 77-62 and Lee County 65-56 to remain undefeated. Estill County came out firing on all cylinders last Tuesday when they hosted Magoffin County. The Engineers defeated the Hornets 76-64. We are officially in basketball season with a week having been played. We've seen a lot of basketball action across the state and across the 14th region. Was they're any movement after week 1 or did everyone stay put for the first week? 1. Perry County Central - The Commodores started the season off going 1-1. They edged out 14th region foe, Letcher County Central in an absolute thriller, defeating the Cougars 83-77. The Commodores would take their 1-0 record up to Pike County Central to participate in the DJ Begley Classic, where they would take on, the 15th Region's Martin County Cardinals. Everything that could go wrong for the Commodores, went absolutely wrong in a blistering defeat to the Cardinals, falling 80-54. 2. Powell County - The Pirates quest for a region championship officially got underway last week as they went on the road to Floyd County to take on the Floyd Central Jaguars. The Pirates didn't get the result they wanted as they fell to the host Jaguars, 72-59. 3. Knott County Central - The Patriots played three games this past week and won two of those three games. In his return to Knott County, this time on the boys side, Coach Jeff Honeycutt got things started off on the right foot as his Patriots picked up a big opening win to start the season, defeating Shelby Valley 65-61. The second game of the season, didn't go the way the Patriots hoped for as a crushing defeat at the hands of Pikeville 59-35. On Saturday, the Patriots and Hornets of Magoffin County would hook up in the DJ Begley Classic at Pike County Central, The Patriots would go on to defeat the Hornets 66-47. 4. Hazard - Coach Casey Huff new era at Hazard started off with a win, a district win at that as his Bulldogs defeated district foe, Buckhorn 71-60. 5. Wolfe County - The Wolves were ranked preseason #7 but have moved up in this weeks rankings after picking up three straight wins, defeating Buckhorn 66-56, Estill County 75-62 and Owsley County 86-76. 6. Leslie County - The Eagles picked up two wins last week to open the season, defeating both Cordia 84-31 and Phelps 81-61 in the DJ Begley Classic at Pike County Central. 7. Letcher County Central - The Cougars quest to make it back to the regional tournament, didn't start off the way they hoped for. They would drop both games last week, falling to Perry County Central 83-77 and Raceland 80-73 in the Boyd County Roundball Classic. 8. Owsley County - Owsley started the season off with a win defeating Lynn Camp 84-40 but would fall in the next two games, falling to Pike County Central 61-59 in an absolute thriller and Wolfe County 86-76. 9. Jenkins - The Cavaliers quest as defending 53rd district champions and making it back to the region tournament has yet to begin. They won't start the season until December 10th. 10. Estill County - The Engineers started the season ranked #12 due to them not returning a single starter from last year's team. The Engineers tipped off the season, falling to the Wolfe County Wolves 75-62. The first half was a dandy but the Wolves would pull away in the second half to go on to defeat the Engineers 75-62. Estill County would bounce back the next night and defeat the Jackson City Tigers 68-46. 11. Lee County - The Bobcats started they're quest to get back to the 56th district championship and region tournament with a thrilling 78-77 overtime win over Jackson City, but that win would be short lived. The Bobcats would drop they're next three games in rough fashion, falling to Morgan County 77-37, Jackson County 81-31 and Pikeville 89-29. 12. Buckhorn - The Wildcats started the season off by dropping all three games. They fell to Wolfe County 66-56 to tip off the season and then would follow that loss up with two more, OBI 86-57, Hazard 71-60. 13. Jackson City - The Tigers dropped both opening round games, both to 56th district teams. Falling 78-77 in overtime to Lee County and then 68-46 to Estill County. The Tigers love the three and can get hot from the arc. 14. Cordia - The Lions season started off bad as they would drop both games badly, falling to both Breathitt County 67-15 and Leslie County 84-31. 15. June Buchanan - The Crusaders went 1-2 last week, falling to Jackson County 71-28 to tip off the season. They would defeat Red Bird 53-38 to pick up they're first win on the season but would fall in the very next game to Foundation Christian Academy 73-31 at Frankfort Christian Academy in the KCAC Boys Basketball Tournament.
