  1. Guy must have been a idiot. 90% of my chemistry students know how to make a fertilizer bomb. Of course I'm in rural ky and most of these good ole boys do that kinda thing for fun.
  2. Unbelievable that Mercer Co would fire a coach that was seconds away from a state tournament birth but they did. My alma mater does it again. So stupid!!!!! http://http://www.amnews.com/stories/2010/04/28/spo.459095.sto
  3. This one is confirmed. Congrats to Greg Edwards and good luck with the Boyle Co lady rebels.
  4. Does anyone have a clue as to who Garrard Co is looking at to fill this position? I've heard former Boyle Co coach Ronnie Bottom's name thrown around.
  5. I'm going to go a different direction here and steal a line from a commercial that I find funny. Sure paddling worked 50 years, but we have developed better ways of dealing with problem kids. I point out hangman's statement about ISS. Again it may have worked 50 years ago, but heck back then people thought moonshine had vitamins. Sorry that may only be funny to me.
  6. Where are you guys living?????? You can't believe everything you see on TV. Today's kids are nothing like this! In 10 years of teaching I've never had a student call me a name (atleast not to my face). Of course teenagers are going to be insubordinate. They need direction, not a paddle to their rear end. Other than the yearly senior prank (which I usually find hilarious) I can't think of any destruction of school property. Knock on wood the high school I currently teach at has not had one single fight all year. Are you really going to tell me that back in the day students didn't get into fights. For everyone out there that is telling me that kids today are somehow worse or more out of control than when you were young I just don't see it. I didn't see it when I taught inner city kids in Louisville, I didn't see it when I taught rural kids in Garrard and Mercer Counties, and I don't see it a Burgin. The literally thousands of kids that I have come in contact with over the past 10 years have for the most part been good respectful kids that just want to succeed. Until I see these demon children that everyone is telling me about I can in NO way advocate paddling kids of any age. Maybe I'm the one living in a fantasy world. :idunno:
  7. You are talking about 2 different things. A school should be a structured setting, but not to the point that teachers are allowed to hit students.
  8. Then I guess over my 10 year career as an educator I'm the only teacher that is getting the "good" kids?
  9. Agreed, but we are talking about 2 different kinds of discipline. Of course I encourage work ethic, self respect, respect of other, ect.......I'm simply stating that it not my job to beat your kids! If your kid acts up in my classroom, I'll simply assign him/her detention with me and that solves most of my problems with a student. If any further disipline is needed I will pick up the phone and call the parents because your the one who is responsible for how your kid acts in school and public not me!
  10. Schools are not a place for discipline. They are places of education. Why should teachers and administrators be held responsible for raising everyone else's kids? We are only responsible for educating them.
  11. Very true, but not the motivating factor that you want between a student and teacher.
  12. As a teacher there is NO way on Earth I would paddle a student even if my school district allowed it. Maybe I'm not teaching the same students they everyone else has, I don't know? In 10 years of teaching/coaching in 3 different school systems I've never once thought....you know what that kid needs is for me to hit him/her? Discipline is NOT my job, that is a job for parents and administrators. I teach chemistry and physics to 16-18 year old students that's what I draw a paycheck to do. I maintain a learning environment in my classroom at all times and I've never had to resort to anything other than assigning detention when a student gets out of line. I feel like my students and players respect me at all times, not because I have the authority to beat the crap out of them, but because they know I care about them and I work with them to achieve their academic and athletic goals. I disagree with the assertion that kids are worse or more disrespectful than in times past. 99% of kids in any given school system are good kids that just want to succeed. Will they slip up? Of course, but I don't think paddling is the answer to that. The 1% of students that others classify as "bad" kids usually come from a home environment that would make your head spin. The last thing you would want to do to those kids is paddle them. Just my opinion.
  13. No. My assistant has applied for both the Boyle girls job and the Garrard boys job. I think Boyle has settled on Greg Edwards, but he may get an interview with Garrard? I can't get a read on what they are doing over there. I'm very happy where I'm at currently. Love the team I'm bringing back next season and my kids love going to school at Burgin. My son is starting 2nd base for the varsity baseball team as an 8th grader. I plan on staying put for awhile. Why are you asking Coly?
  14. Gives me the creeps. Dead father scolding Tiger from the grave.
  15. I don't have any idea what the National College Board has set as the "curriculum" for AP Government. An example of what might be in the curriculum would read something like this.......Students will understand the differences between political parties. Students will understand the core beliefs of the different parties. Someone that is a history teacher I'm sure will correct this, but the point is the same. At this point it is up to the teacher to find interesting and engaging ways to get his/her students to understand the material. The teachers job is to understand his/her students and get the information across in a manner that they can understand. That will vary from school to school and from class to class. Honestly from student to student. I dont know if this teacher was trying to indoctrinate her students with her beliefs or not???? What I do know is that this hand-out was part of atleast a 60 minute lesson but more likely a 90 minute block lesson because its an AP course. Before I pass judgement on someone that has devoted her life to teaching children, I want to know what else was taught during that lesson.
  16. It's a common sense answer to the education problem. Double the number of teachers, you'll double student acheivement. Problem is, that means doubling the payroll. How bad do people want quality education???? Nothing comes for free.
  17. I'm going to throw this out for discussion. I've been a science teacher for 10 years now. I've taught in very large urban schools (Valley Traditional in Louisville), very large rural schools (Mercer Co), and currenly very small school (Burgin Independent). In 10 years of teaching the biggest problem facing student learning is class size!!! When I taught at Valley and Mercer my class size averaged 30+ per class. At Burgin my my chemistry class has 12 students. My physics class has 10 students. My freshman level integrated science classes are the largest at 20 and 21 students. I can accomplish soooooo much more in class and I can provide more individual instruction at Burgin because I have fewer students. To go a step further because of our small size the superintendent attends atleast one of my classes per week. The principal pops in and observes my classes atleast once a week. They do this to every teacher, not to put pressure on us, but to ensure that we are doing what we are supposed to be doing. When I was at Mercer and Valley, I never once saw the superintendent. At Burgin he eats lunch with the students everyday. Point I'm making here is that while smaller schools are not possible, the larger schools need to double the teaching staff. I would bet the farm that if schools had class sizes of 15 or less, student acheivement would dramtically increase. I dont know, I may have just made an arguement for charter schools????
  18. If she teaches at a public school then the state of Texas establishes the curriculum!!!! She likely had zero input on what the curriculum is. To go a step further I believe it was stated that this was an AP Government course. If that's the case, then the curriculum was established by the National College Board. I know this because I teach AP chemistry and AP physics. My point is that teachers DO NOT have any say in curriculum. The only thing this teacher HAS to expain to parents and/or students is her method of presenting information.
  19. Thankfully I only have a 9 mile commute to work, but if gas hits $3.50 this summer the kiddos are going to be dissapointed because the family vaction to the beach may be out.
  20. So true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All good teachers will provide multiple points or view and use multiple sources.
