  1. For argument sake how would these games have gone if we were at 3 classes....

1A Mayfield vs 2A Newport Catholic (IMO best game of the 3)

3A Central vs 4A Boyle (Could Boyle win this one by more than they actually won 4A by)

5A Highlands vs 6A Trinity (Trinity by 3 TD's in a pretty good game)

Does this need it's own thread?

That looks like dream matchups. I would have loved to see this. I think every one of those games would be competitive. 1a game would be outstanding, 3a game would be competitive, and 5a game would be a dream matchup. A mediocre Highlands team able to compete with an excellent Trinity team. And I would love to see these same matchups with maybe a Bell, Beechwood, St X, Cov Cath thrown in there. And would love to see the Highlands/Trinity matchup the next 2 years.

  2. This will probably be the worst finals in history based on margin of victory. I think the average is around 35 right now and with Trinity heading that way, it is going to keep the average up. Someone mentioned 2001, the average was only 22 which is what the average has been the last few years. The big blowouts skew the numbers but still think this is the worst.

  3. 2007 and 2008 there were a lot of competitive games. In fact, almost all those games were competitive. So 2 years of 6 class football the title games were good and 2 years they weren't. The jury is still out if you look at it that way.

In 08', 3 of the 6 games were competitive and in 07', depends what you mean competitive. 1a and 6a were close, the other games were decided by 10 points or more with a couple of blowouts. There were a few games very good, but the majority were decided before the 4th quarter.

  4. There have many blowouts thru the years. Overall, if you take the average scores the last 6 years, the margin of victory for:

    4 classes

    04 20

    05 21

    06 14

    6 classes

    07 16

    08 17

    09 22

And this year will be terrible.

Overall though, I would say it is the same. Now my opinion, I think there should only be 3 classes in KY. Is there any other sport in Kentucky that uses even 4 classes. I know basketball only uses 1, what about cross country, soccer, baseball, volleyball, etc? I think with only 3 classes, playoffs would mean something, playoffs and the state championships would be very competitive, and more exciting to watch.

  5. U of L basketball reference? I'm confused

Sorry, shouldn't have just picked on UL. Many other basketball teams would be thrilled with an elite 8. Kentucky taking a team with one returning starter to the elite 8 is impressive to me, but to Kentucky coaches and die hard fans, only National Championships matter. Just like Trinity and Highlands, only championships matter.

I remember going to college and hearing kids bragging about winning a sectional or regional championship and thought, "what's that."

  6. This is very true. Cincinnati Public Schools were doing nearly nothing against the GCL in football, but Combs made a big change to that. Smith is a very good example with what he did at Boyle as well and I think everyone is aware of what Mueller has been able to accomplish at Highlands. The saddest, but most true thing about this is that many coaches of this talent do not come along in the public school settings often. But it does take people with the personalities like Combs, Smith, and Mueller to really get public programs into strong positions, and until it happens, a lot of the results are going to be similar, if not the same until it does.

I agree with everything you said except I wouldn't put Highlands program with Colerain and Boyle. I agree Mueller is dynamic and has taken Highlands to another level, but Highlands has had a winning tradition long before Mueller was there. I believe they haven't had a losing season in something like 50 years. Colerain and Boyle had pretty bad programs before Combs and Smith got there and totally turned those programs around from the ground up.

  7. And as much as I respect and appreciate Trinity and Highlands programs, winning a state title with only 30 or so teams in a class does not blow me away. Obviously, the two teams can only compete with what they are dealt, but when you compare these two programs to Ohio's, who have at least 115 teams per class, it's no comparison. I believe each team would have some state titles though.

Surprisingly, I just looked at Ohio's enrollment and it looks like Trinity and St Xavier have larger boys enrollment than any other school in Ohio. This kind of shocked me.

  8. The Elite 8? Wow, super impressive.....or not...

To UK standards, when the barometer is only if you won a championship, I guess not impressive. Maybe to UL, since they have not won a championship in 25 years, that would be impressive. But, when you are one of the top 8 teams out of 347 in the country, with 4 players who started year never playing a college game, that is impressive to me. But good thing Kentucky doesn't settle for one of the best, they want to be THE best.

  9. Is this the ice cream that cost 12.99 a half gal or gal?

If so it just shows how stupid people are to pay that price for ice cream.

You get what you pay for? Personally, I think a lot of purchases are stupid to me but can understand why it is not to other people. I would never pay $5 for a cup of coffee or $50,000 for a new car, but people do all the time. I don't buy Graeter's by the gallon but I do take the kids for a cone after some of their events. And also the free dip for A's on their report card.

  10. Really? You might want to check some areas again. Not everyone can afford a 100K home. Not everyone can afford 600 plus a month rent. This statement is fairly outlandish.

I can tell you in Fort Thomas, there are houses for $50,000 or under and rent for less than $600. Now are those great houses and your dream place to live? Probably not, but you wouldn't have to pay tuition to a private school and your kids would get one of the best educations in the state of KY. There was an article a few months ago about how Fort Thomas school district needs their tuition students to meet their budget. The tuition students bring in about $500.000 a year to the school district. There were about 160 tuition paying students. The problem Fort Thomas Independent Schools has, is people using addresses of Fort Thomas to send their kids to school there but actually do not live in the city.

  11. South Kenton had nearly 80 kids on their starter team a few years back.

The Ft. Thomas league does it best IMO. They develop ALL kids. It's a big reason Highlands and NCC is so successful, as already mentioned. In the NKYFL, their main goal is to win a Super Bowl, therefore, many kids see little to no playing time each week.

I do love how all Fort Thomas kids (and even some outside of Ft Thomas) get to play. From my experience, not all the best athletes in 4th thru 8th grade turned out to be the best players on the varsity. There were some studs in 8th grade who never grew any bigger and other athletes who hit their stride later on. Some of the kids were great their entire career but this is why it is important to develop and coach all the players. Out other schools, your varsity stud athlete may never have made it to the team because they quit playing football when they were 12 years old because they didn't get to play.

  12. This is Ft.Thomas....

I will say with the Fort Thomas system, everyone grows up wanting to win state championships and the coaching is influenced by the high school. I think this is great. But not everyone plays together on one team for 10 years. They have multiple grade/middle school teams that play each other. I believe they are all coached the same, but they are wanting to beat the other team they face. The teams are based on where they live or grade school so they probably do not know all their teammates until they reach freshman, because they are foes until then. They may get to know each other in Middle School since they are all in the same school, but they want to beat each other until they are on the same team as freshman.

Maybe I am wrong on this. But I agree, the Fort Thomas feeder system is one of the main reasons for the birds success. Thank God for Homer Rice. By the kids playing in their own league, everyone gets to play more and get much better coaching. They are taught the right way from early on.

  13. Get back to me when you play St.X, Ballard, Male, Manual, etc. every year. Now that's impressive. Nice spin though.

I have all the respect in the world for Trinity and obviously they are one of the best. But if you look at the enrollment of the above mentioned schools, the only one in their league is St. X. Trinity's enrollment if you factor in just boys is well over 1,000 more kids than Male, Manual, etc. That is more students than Highlands has in their school. So when you compare who has done more with what they have, I think Highlands has. As someone mentioned, Trinity did have many titles before their enrollment ballooned and I believe overall, Trinity has a better team. There have been many years when Highlands would have won the 6a title, but I think Highlands has done more with their program. Now if Trinity splits their team in half and then wins 6a every year, I would be extremely impressed.

On a side note, I work with a guy who graduated from Permian High School in Texas (Friday Night Lights) and he told me his graduating class had almost 1,500 students. That is amazing.

  14. Don't y'all think it would be nice if someone else won this thing? 2000 was the last time Male won it. They have lost to the Rocks in the Playoffs four times since then. Male like the Rocks have a young team. The freshman team has great numbers but the talent isn't there right now, but will get better. The JVs did better and they also have great numbers.

Is PaPa Johns open? If Morris gets healthy this will help. Male has got some good kids and will play hard.

Coach Wolfe at this level to advance to the finals is amazing. These kids can only grasp so much and bringing in all he had to do, well we are really happy with Chris.

I told Mama at the PRP/Male game back when our son played.."if Coach Red ever leaves they need to talk to this guy".

Good luck to both teams and lets hope for no injuries for all the kids on all levels.

I would love to see Male win. I would love for Coach Wolfe to get a championship in his first year. I just don't see it happening this year. Trinity just has too much talent and tradition. I think Male will give them a run for their money in some upcoming years. Maybe the big 3 will be back. No shame in finishing runner-up in the State Finals. Good luck to both teams this weekend.
