  1. The problem I have is the regular season doesn't mean anything. If this the junior football league or even the freshman, fine, let everyone in the playoffs. But we are going back to little league and giving everyone trophies for participating. Why bother with the playoffs, let everyone play 14 games so everyone gets a chance to play more. But if this is about rewarding teams for winning in the regular season, we need to stop watering down the playoffs. Sure you are going to have 4's and 3's win, then what incentive was there to win in the regular season (homefield advantage is all I can think of). The playoffs are a reward for doing well in the regular season. When I played, if I didn't think I had a chance to win the state championship, I would rather of not made the playoffs (which happened a few times).

  2. Why do we play the regular season then? How many teams did not make the playoffs? We could just start with the playoffs, everyone gets in and plays a game, get the season over, and let the players who want to play basketball make it to their teams in time for the first game. I could live with 4 playoff teams if there were only 3 or 4 classes. But when virtually every team gets into the playoffs, the regular season means nothing. Are you going to hang a banner saying you were district champs?

  3. I thought Ryle made the birds look pretty bad tonight. There were some bright spots, but overall, Ryle just kicked tail. You can make all the excuses you want, but Highlands got beat tonight. And personally, I think the score shows a closer game than what I saw. The birds should be proud for not giving up and making it close at the end. I saw too many penalties, too many missed tackles, too much laying on the field, and too many dropped passes. Congrats to Ryle on the great win and congrats to the birds for the unbelievable run. In the grand scheme of things, the loss does nothing to Highlands. They still strap it up next week and start competing for number 20. Hopefully everyone heals quickly and good luck next week.

  4. I will say when I travel on business doing seminars, when I am in the southern states, I always say I am from Kentucky. And I always get, "I knew you weren't a Yank." When I travel to the northern states, I say I'm from the Cincinnati area. When I am traveling for vacation, I always say I am from Kentucky. I can't stand to go into Ohio for anything.

  5. This is an odd request, but...

Does anyone happen to have access to the 1958 Highlands yearbook (Highlander)? I'm wondering if perhaps Henry521 or a member of her family has one?

In the unlikely chance that someone does, I would be very interested in knowing what games are listed for the HHS football team FOR THE 1957 SEASON.

Highlands' official all-time win-loss-tie record (the one accepted by the KHSAA and the national record book) assumes that Highlands played and won 10 games that year. Birdsfan is indicating Highlands played Deek Park, Ohio that year, giving them an 11-0 record. Coach Homer Rice once wrote a letter stating Highlands had a forfeit win over a team called Hamilton Catholic, this making their record 11-0 on the year (he didn't mention anything about playing/beating Deek Park). I'm curious if the yearbook sheds light on this.

According to the KHSAA's records/stats department, if evidence (such as a yearbook) can be presented showing the existence of a game, the official books can be amended. Every win counts!

I believe my dad has this yearbook, I will check with him. Meanwhile, I found the yearbook on Ebay

Maybe you could email him and ask them what it says. In the description, it states Highlands went 10-0 and claimed the mythical state championship.

  6. Thanks everyone for all the help thus far. I contacted both Tates Creek HS (where the Thoroughbred Bowl was held) and Montgomery County HS (where the Recreation Bowl was/is held) in order to obtain copies of all the previous bowl participants, but so far no luck.

Also, it seems, as has been pointed out, that HHS played in the Thoroughbred Bowl about every year in the late 80s/early 90s. I see where in 1988 Highlands opened the season against Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park. Was this a Thoroughbred Bowl game as well?

The 88 game was just a regular opener. No bowl game I am aware of. It was played at PRP.

  7. I'm not defending his coaching record; however, it's worth noting that he did have an 11-1 team in 1986 that was knocked out of the playoffs in a one point loss (in double overtime) to Duffy's Danville Admirals. Otherwise, that likely would have been a state championship team. His other teams were 5-4, 7-3, and 6-4.

I would say this was one of the main reasons he was fired. I would say the 86 team had the best talent to never win a state championship at Highlands. One of the more talented teams they have ever had. And to follow that up with a 7-4 record and not make the playoffs, see ya later.

  8. While I agree with much of your post, I don't agree with the bolded part. Tom certainly had his supporters and they were real. His players and their parents thought very highly of him. There were many others that while they didn't like him or agree with all of his methods, thought he was one heck of a coach. He still, to me, is the best Xs and Os high school coach that I have ever seen. Tom liked to say there were football players and there were kids that wanted to be on the team. Tom didn't want to deal with the latter group. He never cut kids as some have alleged over the years. He did make his practices very tough, although in hindsight I'd probably say that Mueller's practices aren't too far off from Tom's; heck they may be just as tough particularly Weinrich's defensive practices. I heard a lot of people claim that Tom made his practices so tough to run kids off that he didn't think were football players. But if a kid loved football he could make it through the practices. I had a nephew on Tom's teams. Nephew was and is a great kid but frankly wasn't very talented football wise. Played the entire 4 years but rarely saw the field. He was a big kid. Practices were particularly tough on the big kids because of all the running. In spite of that and in spite of the kid knowing he'd rarely see the field, the kid hung in there. I will always respect him for that. If he could do it, almost any one wanting to be on the team could have done it. Tom clearly had a Charlie Bradshaw mentality. That upset those parents whose kids choose not to deal with Tom's toughness. As we've seen elsewhere, when parents start grumbling and second guessing coaches, it's not long before the coach is doomed. I think Tom understood that he was irritating a lot of people in Ft. Thomas but felt that as long as he kept winning state championships, all would be well. I don't know if Tom left on his own accord; it doesn't really matter. But I'll agree that his departure was for the best of the football program. Dale has a completely different attitude towards those players that "aren't football players". Dale believes with hard work, committment and coaching those kids can become football players. Looking at Dale's record and watching kids as seniors that just didn't look like football players as freshman, sophomores and even juniors, Dale's approach has proven true.

I would agree with this about 100%. Duffy believed he could win state championships as long as he had 11 "football" players on his team. He didn't need any more players. Don't forget Coach Weinrich played for Duffy so maybe some of his tough practice techniques has rubbed off on him. Anyone been to the "County Fair" lately down in death valley.

  9. Just alittle fact, Highlands first game under Duffy against Cov. Cath., Highlands didn't even get a first down.

I remember that game. It was ugly. The 1988 team had a great defense though, regular season opponents offense averaged 4.4 points a game and had 7 shutouts. It helps having an NFL linebacker securing the defense.

I was not suggesting any coach at Highlands played players based on name, just saying Duffy didn't care who you were, he did not pull any punches. I will say to this day, and probably in every sport, parents still go into the offices to question why their son doesn't play more. I would say they were treated a little better today than back in the day. But I will disagree in Highlands never needed turning around.

  10. He did come in at a time when the program was a little thin. But what he did for the health of the program could never be considered a good thing. His methods and manor were too extreme for a healthy high school football program. It's actually more complicated than that, but that's the biggest part of it. Dale grew up in the Ft. Thomas program, and knows what it takes to win...and to succeed here.

I believe his methods rubbed people the wrong way in Fort Thomas. Danville was and still is a healthy football program and I believe Sam Harp has the same personality as Duffy. Duffy has always been loved in Danville. There are a lot of politics in Fort Thomas with everything including football. A lot like Kentucky basketball, it takes a special personality to lead the program. Duffy was a great coach and turned the program around with what he had. It didn't matter to him what your last name was, he played whoever he thought was going to help the team win. Everyone on his teams were there because they wanted to be there and they worked their tail off. I will always have respect for Coach Duffy, but I agree Coach Mueller is better for the program. I may not agree with everything he does, but you can not argue with the success. He played at Highlands so he knew what was expected. And he plays the part of politician as good as anyone.

BTW, Highlands will have the biggest, fastest team you have ever seen this year.

  11. Two or Three more years of Duffy, and Highlands may not be the program they are today. While I agree he was an excellent x's and O's coach. His style of coaching, his personality make it hard for him to maintain a programs. Coach Mueller is a much better fit for Highlands. IMO for High school football.

This could very well be the case, but you could also argue without Duffy coming in, Highlands may not be the program it is today. He came in when the Birds had the longest stretch without a state championship, took a team in his second year which was widely considered one of the thinnest classes in talent, and won state with 35 players and a line that averaged about 170 pounds on both sides of the ball. Then followed it up with another state title with obviously a little more talent. I agree, Duffy was not a good fit for Fort Thomas because he didn't care what anybody thought (players, teachers, parents, or administrative), but he did get the job done and brought winning back to Fort Thomas after the "dark years."

No one can argue what "Smiley" has done for the program. He is a people person, great coach, local boy, and loves the school.

  12. I will have to second(third, fourth) Quaker Steak and Lube. Louisiana Lickers are the best. I have heard they are opening a second location on Buttermilk Pike. Well worth the drive to Milford though and they also have a pick up window which comes in very handy.

Did someone say they have an all you can eat night there though? I can do some damage to some wings.

  13. I have an off topic question but hopefully you Highlands guys can help me out. Does anyone know where I could pick up a tan/brown Highlands baseball cap. It can say anything on it pertaining to HHS but it needs to be a tan cap. Transfer Station only had the blue hats with the H on them and the school only had jerseys in their spirit shop.

    Thanks

  14. LN and T-bird:

Nice job on the summation of '05 and '06. I am late jumping on this but with a couple of sons playing in that time frame it always burned me to call the two years, "down years." Especially by folks who did not see them play. The two squads in '05 and '06 had a ton of talent. As LN eloquently stated and T-bird accurately stated, the competition was more than the 'birds could handle at a time when two platooning was common. Other than the X game in Louisvile, there were some close and exciting games the two years in question.

If you want to look for the 'Dark Ages" in HHS football, look no further than when I played. 1971 through 1974! No trips to the Championships and no playoffs other than B Station my sophomore year. Then came LN and T-bird and the championships resumed!

I would say the "dark ages" for HHS football would have been the Eicher years, 83-87. If you include 88, the longest modern streak for the birds without a state title. I believe every coach has a championship since 60 except Eicher. Nice guy but terrible for the program.

  15. I had a friend do this to his brother in law. He had gay magazines sent to his home and 1 sent to the neighbors house in his brother in law's name. The wife wasn't too happy. Every time he gives him a check, he puts love massage in the memo field.

    They get along great
