Truth, and I believe that is why Grant looked straight to him when the screw up occurred. He did not make the call but still shocked it went down like that....

In the end it didn't matter in the outcome, but still, very strange.

And I think this is part of the reason Grant didn't press the issue. With or without the points, I believe NCC decided not to stir the pot to much 45 seconds into the game. I thought Grant was more calm (knowing how he normally acts on the sideline with the officals) about the situation than I thought he would be.

But again, Dave Kanarack simply said 'He blew the call'. At least he admitted it. I think the whole situation could have gotten worse if he 'fought it' or 'argued' it with Grant, the coaches, the fans, etc.. Even though the wrong call was made and after 'not fixing it', he admitted the mistake and moved on. I was ok with that part of it.

As for the Lloyd kids not going in the lane. I believe everyone in the gym thought it was a one shot free throw except for Larry, Curly and Moe (only kidding). It was a kind of a long rebound that McDonald got and put back in.

Did anyone notice anything strange with 10 seconds left in the 3rd quarter when NCC put their 5 starters (at once) back in the game and the Lloyd coach called time out (their last time out for the game) to set up some kind of defense against NCC? And the defense was to foul and foul hard so NCC couldn't run their end of quarter play? I thought that kind of sparked some chippiness between the teams for the remainder of the game. Or, it could have been just me that noticed it.

I am okay with this part as well. Atleast he admitted it. They are human you know.

So you are saying a coach would not argue or stir the pot over the first few points of the game because he knew it would not influence the outcome of a game vs Lloyd? No way! Any coach would go crazy to get his points in the first few minutes of a game to gain momentum. He may not argue as much up 40 in the 4th quarter. My guess he was as confused as everyone else. Sounds like everyone had to be scratching their heads over this error. Glad it did not come down to something goofy like this to determine the outcome. Happy to hear the refs owned up.

I think Grant could have gone absolutely nuts over the call and got everyone fired up if he wanted to. Could have gotten technicals and even thrown out of the game because of the blown call.

However, I think he felt that he had the better team, should win the game pretty easy with or without the call, why make a bigger deal out of it. The ref said he blew the call.... I think Grant handled it well.

Why go off on the call and berate the ref who admitted he blew the call when you have the entire game still to play. I think he took the high road on the play because he had an entire game to play against a lesser opponent.

Had this exact same scenario played out against HC in the All A final Saturday night, I believe his reaction would have been drastically different, but it was against a team he was a heavy favorite against.

Agreed. High praise for coach Brannen for the way he handled this situation. Great coach who handled this situation appropriately.

Got it, I thought the ref didn't admit the mistake till later or after the game. I don't think Coach Brannen would ever discount or disrespect any opponent and he knows every point counts. He had to choose his battle at that point.

During the next time out the three refs huddled in front of me and discussed what happened. The ref stated 'he missed the ball going into the basket' and awarded the player 2 free throws. The scoreboard still reflected 0 - 0 at that time of the first free throw. When the ref reported the foul to the scorers table, he never indicated the basket was good and therefore the points were never put up.

Once the mistake was noticed after the missed free throw and put back, in my opinion, what should have happened was: the refs should have met, determined that the basket in fact should have counted, given NCC 2 points for that part. Since the free throw was missed, at that point it should have been a dead ball and based on the alternating possession the ball should have been inbounded by the team based with the aarow and the score NCC 2 Lloyd 0.

You couldn't allow NCC who got the rebound and put back to keep those points since Lloyd (which I'm sure they weren't but could argue) didn't attempt to rebound since the ref said 2 shots.

Just my thought on how it should have been handled.

If the play was called correctly as an and one, NCC would have received the original basket (2 points), the put back (2 points) and I believe McDonald was fouled on the put back (don't know if the ref would have called it or not but it looked like he got fouled) with McDonald at the free throw line shooting one. So, NCC could have been up 5 - 0 on the trip down the court.

Talked with several veteran officials and the way Moken explained itis exactly right. NCC should have received 2 points for the asket by Highchew. Since he missed the second shot the ball could not be rebounded by NCC because the official administering the play indicated 2 shots and Lloyd would not have had a legitimate chance to rebound. The ball should have been awarded to whoever had the arrow at that time. Score 2-0 at that point. Anything occuring after missed foul shot doesn't count because of official indicating 2 shots.

You are exactly right about the end of the 3rd quarter situation. I'm sure NCC put their starters back in to run a specific play that they would use in that situation in a close game. Good coaches do this a lot. It was obvious to me Lloyd's coach did not like this, had 2 fouls to give, and wasn't about to let NCC run a play. They fouled hard several times before the end of the quarter. Ironically Buetter hit a 3 at the buzzer anyway.

The above is only true IF the error was discovered in the timeframe allowed by the rulebook. That's why I asked previously what happened after play resumed? Was there a deadball prior to the timeout? If so, it's too late to change it at the timeout.

This scenario falls under allowable scenarios for correctable error BUT , again, that does come with a limit as to when you can change it. You have to know when the ball became live after the error, when it became dead the next time, and IF it went live again.

If there had not been any dead balls (remember that a made shot is a dead ball) after play resumed and then there was a timeout it could have been corrected at that point.

My guess is there had been a live/dead/live scenario before the timeout which means it's too late to change anything. That's probably why it never got changed even when they realized they missed it.

There was only a live/dead ball. The ball became alive when put at the foul shooter's disposal and never became alive again, as it was a 2 shot foul, before the call came into question. The officials just made a mistake.
