Each of the games is a match-up between high school teams from Ohio and Kentucky. Over the last nine years, the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic has donated more than $98,000 to local charities. Proceeds from this season's games will go to Ruth Lyons Children's Fund, Neediest Kids of All and Chicks-n-Chucks, a breast cancer awareness organization.

 

This year the Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic is taking place at two locations: Oak Hills High School and Dixie Heights High School. The schedule is as follows:

Each day I'm going to pick a game and provide a little detail from the blog...

 

After a season-opening loss, Finneytown won five of its next six games. The Wildcats’ offensive leaders have been senior forward DeMarco Hunter and senior center Tyrin Warner.

 

Conner closed out the 2011 portion of its schedule playing in the Lloyd Invitational and won two of four games. The Cougars have been relying on guards Sam Hemmerich, Drew Barker and Cody Huff for most of their scoring.

Does Dixie play a regular schedule or are they just a tournament team? Looks like there are some great teams in this tourney.

Each team will only play one game. It is more of a showcase than a tournament.

 

Dixie JV will play @ 4:30 and their Varsity will play at 7:45, both against Lakota West.

 

I am definitely excited about some of the games. Should provide some great competition, especially since they don't typically play each other.

OAK HILLS (3-3) vs. RYLE (3-4) - Game is being played at Oak Hills @ 5:30 pm

 

Oak Hills had a three-game winning streak snapped by a loss to LaSalle, the defending Ohio Division I state champion. Junior forward Jake Richmond is averaging 14.1 points for the Highlanders. He was a double-figure scorer in four of the team’s first six games.

 

Ryle won the first two games it played at a holiday tournament last week, but the Raiders had a hard time putting the ball in the basket during a 53-38 points loss to Gallatin County in the championship final. None of the Ryle players scored more than six points in that loss.

LaSALLE (6-0) vs. CHRISTIAN COUNTY (3-8)

 

LaSalle, the defending Ohio Division I state champion, won its first six games by double-digit margins and held each opponent to 41 points or less. Senior guard Josh Lemons and junior guard Conner Speed are the Lancers’ leading scorers.

 

Christian County is going through an adjustment period after losing all five starters from last year’s Kentucky state championship team. The Colonels’ most promising newcomers are sophomore guards Demarius Poindexter and Isaiah Pollard.

COVINGTON CATHOLIC (9-4) vs. COLERAIN (4-3)

 

CovCath has gotten off to a good start under new coach Scott Ruthsatz, and his son has played a major role in the Colonels’ early success. Sophomore point guard Nick Ruthsatz leads the team in scoring and assists.

 

Colerain is averaging 66 points per game with an up-tempo style of play that is perfectly suited for junior guards Kane Thompson, Milton Davis, Deiontay Walters, who all have double-figure scoring averages. Walters is also averaging four assists and three steals per game.

One player from each team participating in the 2012 Bluegrass-Buckeye Charity Classic will receive a Scholar-Athlete Award after their game on Saturday, Jan. 14. The awards were created to recognize young men who excel in both academics and athletics. The list of award-winners for this year's BBCC includes:

DIXIE HEIGHTS (8-5) vs. LAKOTA WEST (7-3)

 

Dixie Heights has won three straight games to push its record above the .500 mark. In the Colonels’ latest victory, sophomore guard Brandon Hatton had 33 points and senior forward Parker Stansberry had 19.

 

Lakota West’s good start should come as no surprise. The Firebirds have four players back from last year’s team, including junior forward Monty Boykins. He was a double-figure scorer in each of the team’s first 10 games and enters the week with a 15.6 average.
