The Birds struggled in the first half with scoring and had 18 turnovers, many unforced. Witte was the lone bright spot scoring 8 of their anemic 11 first half point including a couple treys. A hustling Bird defense though kept this from being worse than 15 pts.

 

Hatton was not on his game and Dixie as a whole looked sluggish. They did play very good defense though. Fox has nice balance but he had a few turnovers and had the ball stolen a couple times. Stansberry stood out playing Well in transition.

 

Towles is out still resting and Carter New dnp either, still sick. It will be nice when the Birds get that Sr experience back. A lot of young players on the floor just not used to the Varsity environment. Dixie fans traveled Well in fact they had more students then Highlands. Sad but true.

Will the football team avg. more points then the Birds basketballers? All kidding aside when PT, New & any other footballers get back things will get better.

This is a young Birds team. Only 3 seniors. The experience should lend itself well to the future. The soph and junior classes are strong, with good numbers. They should get plenty of varsity experience this season.

 

That said, Pat and Carter will be a welcome addition for the remainder of this year.

I agree, I expected a higher offensive output but I think that was due to a pretty solid defensive effort by both teams and poor shooting. When you have kids playing for the first time at home in front of a pretty decent crowd their nerves can sometimes get to them (Most of Highlands kids). I know it takes them hitting a first shot or two to relax and play loose and Witte was the only one that came out shooting well. Everyone else played pretty tight and it was evident with the unforced turnovers.

 

The school thanks you for the $5 though.

You seem to be pretty high on the Witte kid. Anyone else stand out for Highlands or have at least a good game? Are any of the kids you mention previously sophomores? I know they had a nice freshman team last year. Is the Greene kid still playing?

Witte is shooting very well probably shooting just over 50% from behind the arc thus far. Hitting his first 2 threes helped with his confidence and the other guys started off cold. I thought Nick True played well grabbing some nice boards and scoring 8 pts. He is coming along very nicely and will compliment 6'6 Pat Towles when he comes back very well. The sophomores that played struggled but its to be expected. Greene saw a minute or two late in the 4th. He has potential to be a very nice ballplayer, he just needs to get more minutes as do all of the football kids. Seth Hope 6'2 190 is a very good rebounder and tough kid. He is out for 2 weeks with a broken hand sustained in the Shroeder game. The sophomores will be expected to grow up quick on this team but many of them are footballers so it will take some time. Sophomore Drew Houliston had a nice game grabbing some tough boards and playing aggressively. He is definitely a Varsity player.

 

Sam Lewis had a great first game but only scored a bucket last night. He will be a key contributor due to his ability to shoot the ball. Luke Turner 6'2 Junior played in his first game last night and after a shaky first half his game flowed better in the 2nd half getting to the line and converting. He is a slasher and can attack the rim very well. Its a work in progress and like most football schools it will take until January to get the kinks out.

Very tough game to watch. HHS had too many unforced turnovers at the point guard position. The offense seem to be pass the ball around with no dribble penetration or look for the shot. CN should help at the point guard spot and PT will help on the boards but till they get back into BB shape the offense needs to go through Witte. I know there was talk of up tempo play but you need the players to play at that pace and if its not there you have to have a half court offense. Play the five best players and leave them in for more then a couple of minutes, the substitution pattern left alot to be desired. Mix in a timeout when the other team goes on a ten point run and when players continue to make the same mistake over and over again don't drop your head take them out. Finally, if Dixie is the top NKY team in the region they will be a quick out at Rupp.

Imsays that is a Fair assessment. Tough to Run on a team with Dixies overall team speed and athleticism. They Did beat the Colonels down the floor many times but they also Missed several opportunities due to Hinkle's inabilty to see over the top due to his size. Not to mention too much passing around the perimeter and not enough attacking the rim. Good things happen when you attack. You either beat your man and get a nice 2 foot floater like Witte Did the one time over 6'5 Stansberry, you draw and kick out for an open 3, or you draw a foul and get to the line. There wasnt enoughattacking once Dixie got back and forced them until their halfcourt set. I attribute that to lack of Varsity experience and also a steller defensive effort by Dixie.
