It's been nice as a fan to see a coach develop, kind of like watching a player develop. Coach Wright has brought this Lee County team from the cellar of the reigon and the lower portion of the state to a real 14th contender. The fans are fond of saying that we have the "Wright Coach"

Dee Hutchins did a great job at Lee County in the late '90s...until coach Wright gets them into the regional tournament (which is not a given) and wins a couple of games, or wins the class "a" region, I don't think you can consider him that great of a coach or Lee County that good of a team. Last year top to bottom they were better than Owsley County. But lost to them in the all a after leading by a bunch, and then got embarrassed in the first game of the district tournament by an Owl team that had lost their head coach along the way.

And that Owl team had one of the best players in the reigon in Tyson Gross too if you remember. Lee County is 3-0 in the district for the first time in YEARS and has one 8 strait in the first time in who knows win...tell my, why do you not like our coach...because you refuse to give him credit for a GREAT JOB this year...do me a favor, check out the Bobcats before and after Coach Wright got here.And tell me what what Dee Hutchins did that was so great.

You said in an earlier post that Lee County was in the cellar... that may have been the case, but not 6 years ago coach Hutchins had them competing in the 14th also. What's the difference? I agree, they are competing in December and January (they did that when Hutchins was there), but the real games don't count until late Ferbruary, early March. That's all I was saying. Lee County was 10-12 points better than Owsley last year. I figure that will be about the spread when Smith is back. They had better hope that Owsley doesn't end up the four seed and them the one. Could be deja vu.

Also had Jon Charles and Jonnie Green and lost in the first round of the districts with all 3 players as seniors.

I knew Lee County was underrated when I saw the various preseason ratings that had them around 6th or 7th. It's my understanding they had a great summer camp record against good competition, and they have most of their key players returning, plus a good 9th/10th grade squad to give them depth.

Right now I would have to put them as the favorite to win the 14th region All "A" Classic this year, and be in the thick of things to win the regular 14th region title.

Seen Lee Co. play several times...same team as last year, everyone else lost more to graduation in the 14th...don't fool yourself it is still really early. It's easy to talk a good game, but until they play a couple of good games when it counts (class "a", district, and region) they are no better than all the other teams from Lee County over the past 16 years.

Have they been to the regional tournament since Wright has been coaching there? Since there are only four teams in the 56th, then I assume they have lost in the first round of the district with talent every year too. What's the difference?

Same team huh?!?! What about Fetters starting and Mike Weatherspoon coming off the bench. Devin Taulbee is stepping it way up. So, um, maybe same people, way different players!

1997-'98 started out (7-1) split with all the district teams, lost in the first round of the district tournament to Owsley County.

1998-'99 started out (8-2) split with Wolfe and Owsley, beat Powell twice, lost in the first round of the district tournament to Wolfe County 52-47.

 

Bottom line, this district has seeded for a long time (so most years you know several weeks in advance who you'll be playing). Lee County has been to the regional tournament once in the last 16 years, and that came in '97. They have had several teams good enough to at least get to the region.

We will just have to wait and talk about this at the end of the year. But you have to say that Lee has played well so far...or do you not want to had out any credit to the Bobcats.

I have to agree with the Bobcat fans. I don't think Wright has had the teams to make it to the regional tourney in the past 8 years based on the strength of the other District rivals. Powell won a regional title,I think Wolfe has played in the finals twice if I am not mistaken. This is the first year in 8 to 10 that Lee has had the talent and the coaching to contend, not to mention that the district is down some this year but Estill will be the equalizer. I have seen all 4 teams play at least 3 times each and I would take Lee and give the other three. It is hard to beat a team 3 or 4 times however and Lee will have to do that to Estill if they are to win the 56th.

I believe that Coach Wright has made tremendous improvement, especially in the past couple of years. I think that the Bobcats will be a contender all year and will play in the regional tourney for the first time in a while. Good things are happening in Beattyville and if you don't believe me, make the trip to a game and see.
