Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae

Featured Replies

Fannie and Freddie are double the fun. These quasi-government/private entities have the greed of the large banks combined with the cesspool politics of Washington. What could go wrong?

This is another example of why smaller goverment is needed. Without programs like this you have less bureaucracy to cause problems.

The free market allowed those who could qualify to buy homes for most of our history as a nation.

Please stop passing the buck. The "free market" is just as guilty in this recession as the government. You guys are ridiculous with how you play politics. Please admit both philosophies are guilty.

The government under Clinton forced banks to make loans that were questionable, if not out right wrong to make. No free market forces here, just government intervention.

If free market forces had been allowed to work, we may have had some short-term difficulties, but this mess would have been cleared up by now. Propping up a dead horse will not allow him to run in the Derby next year. Let failures fail and those who are healthy economically to continue on, instead of hurting everyone in trying to prop up the economic dead.

Banks were forced to take government even if they did not need it. Another example on needless government intervention. And all those jobs saved came at the expense of hundreds of thousands of dollars per job. One more example of wasteful government intervention.

Those who guilty are the 2 major political parties in DC, not the free markets.

With smaller government you have less chance of waste. With the free market there are ups and downs and those who are greedy and try to corner the market for their own personal advancement, like Soros, our history is filled with situations like this.

You may need some regulations of the free market, but government programs never will be the equal of the free market.

Politicians on both sides are guilty, individuals who take advantage of both government programs and the free market are guilty, but not the free market.

^I am looking forward to the 2020 Presidential election and seeing what problem then is the fault of Bill Clinton.

We can hope that this business cycle will have run it course and even that the government will have learned its lesson and not repeat this same debacle.

Although B. Frank likes these failed government programs.

It is not a perfect science, but one should try to use history to avoid future mistakes. A philosophy that liberals want no part of whatsoever

That's all you have is to blame Bill Clinton? Really?

Guess what, I don't like him either. Come up with a better excuse for rich people fleecing regular joes the way it's going on now. If the "free market" had its way I'd be homeless right now.

And another thing: If banks were "forced to take government," why are there banks now touting the fact that they "refused government aid?"

I'm going to re-phrase it.

Not all of them took aid. It was mostly the high end banks.

Doesn't change the fact that conservatives are trying to pin the blame on government for the current financial mess we're in and is gleefully letting the "free market" off the hook for its sizeable role. Stop passing the buck.

I'm sorry. Who let the free market off the hook? Was it the government who bailed the banks out? You need to do your research. When the Government makes it a priority and deems it necessary for every individual to own a home and put policies forth to ensure that. I and every other sane person is going to give them a big chunk of the blame.

You're making the same faux pas as all the rest and acting like government's the only lightning rod. The "free market" gleefully took whatever government incentives it could and did its part in driving this country to ruin. Are you telling me the "free market" has no ability to say no, and no ability to restrain itself from destructive practices? Because that's sure what it looks like, especially when the "free market" choir starts its chants.

I agree with you that the individuals in the free market did some stupid things. But when you want to know a percentage, I blame the government more so than the free market.

What's your percentage? 90/10?
