statmanhensley Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Golden Lions come up with the win in Paris. It was a crazy finish. Hope someone that was at the game can give us some insight once they get home.
PurplePride92 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Good win Garrard!!! I thought they might lose a heartbreaker there for a second.
gchs_uk9 Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Wild game. I have no voice and I don't hardly have the ability to type. But here goes. First, Bourbon County is a terrific football team. Running back Kentayvous Hopkins is the best running back I've seen against Garrard this year. And here's a name to remember: Brent Holman. He's a freshman linebacker and he made every play on defense. He had two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. They are really good. Bourbon scored first on a 70+ yard interception return by Holman. Garrard came back to tie it 7-7 and that was the score before halftime. Both teams traded scores to make it 14-14 before Bourbon picked up a safety at the end of the third quarter on a snap that went over the Garrard backfield. It was 16-14 Bourbon. After Garrard kicked off to Bourbon following the safety, the Colonels put together a good drive capped off by Hopkins scoring from around 30 yards out to make it 22-14. They mishandled the PAT snap, however, and the score stay as it was. That might have been the play of the game. Garrard went back and scored to cut it to 22-20 and while it appeared obvious they had scored on the 2-point conversion it was ruled no good. That was the first of three horrible calls against Garrard in the fourth quarter. Garrard caught a huge break when Hopkins fumbled in his own territory. Garrard scored with just over a minute left and the 2-pt PAT made it 28-22 Lions. Bourbon struggled to move it down the field but were aided by a late-hit call that was highly questionable, followed by a phantom pass interference call with 2 seconds left (by the way, no referee was able to tell the Garrard staff who the penalty was on. Bourbon would score on the last play of the game to tie it, but their entire bench ran to the endzone, which was a celebration penalty enforced on the PAT. Garrard blocked it to keep it at 28-28 and send it to overtime. In OT, Hopkins scored on a fourth down run, but was stopped short on the 2-pt conversion. Garrard then had their chance, scoring on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Billy Abney to Tyler McCoy on 4th & goal. Garrard then kicked the extra point and won 35-34. Just a great game by both teams. I think both teams are capable of deep playoff runs, but this was a huge step toward a district title for Garrard County. Whoever wins this district this season will have home field advantage throughout the postseason so this was a huge wins for the Lions. I've never seen better fan support for the team and the fans were all on the field for the post game talk. There was just no way to keep the fans away. This truly meant a lot and this team means a lot to the people of Lancaster. Football is starting to become a big deal again.
Tall Trees Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 There were several calls that went against Bourbon that were awful as well. I thought the officals were terrible both ways. After watching the film there was a call when they said the center moved the ball and it never happened. That made it go from 4th and inces to fourth and 5. Also a holding plenty that went against Bourbon that never happened. Garrard went for a 2 point play and got stopped that would have sent the game to 2nd OT but the offical blew the whistle and stopped the play saying Coach Poynter called timeout. That never happened no verbal request nor a signal. Garrard has a good team and I say Congrats to Coach Scenters and the lions. But officating in central ky is TERRIBLE!!! It is every week.
Tall Trees Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 Also good job Colonels I am very proud of you!!!

You have a good point TT. I didn't mean to imply that Bourbon got all the calls, but rather Garrard was victimized several times late that really hurt. The call on the center moving the ball was horrible; everyone on the Garrard sideline was confused as to what even happened. That was a huge play in the first half. As for the 2-point conversion late, first, I have no clue what Garrard was doing. But that play blew up because the ref blew the whistle and most of the Garrard line didn't even attempt to block anyone because the play was over. As for whether it was requested or not, I was on the visiting sideline so I have no idea. Both teams played so hard and so well, however. I wouldn't be surprised to see both in the regional final.
Tall Trees Posted October 8, 2011 Posted October 8, 2011 I agree both teams kids laid it on the line. That is what football is all about.

Wasn't Garrard County about on par with Bracken County as far as football futility over the years record-wise? What has turned them around this season? Are they or Bracken County the bigger surprise in your opinion? Thanks.
