Disagree, don't believe in telling kids to just play one sport.

 

Do whatever you want - but then don't expect to compete with girls that are dedicated to the sport for more than 3 months . . . and that's not public vs private, rich vs poor - that's a choice. Instead of telling kids what to do, try asking them first. The answer may suprise you.

 

IN GENERAL ( I repeat, in general ) I think boys and girls face immense pressure in our state to play basketball - pressure from communities, friends, and yes, even at home. And I suspect this pressure is even greater in our smaller and more rual communities where there are less athletes, and less choices. The thought of young Brittany not playing basketball at the local high school? Never! It's in our culture, our way of life. . . . I think what could be the greatest volleyball player ever from the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky is stuck somewhere toiling away on a basketball team all winter because that's what she's "supposed" to do.

I respectfully disagree. We are talking State Championship, and no team should have to rely on the luck of the draw to determine their chances . Those girls are athletes who work hard to EARN the right to compete fairly.

 

That being said, I personally would like to see school volleyball classified like football, according to school size. That would give more schools, including public ones a chance to be state champions.

Really?? Football has been doing this for years quite successfully. Everybody knows the big schools are the most dominate, but there is nothing wrong with a small school championship. Believe me, I am not a fan of the "everyone should have a ribbon mentality" in high school. However, competing within your school size enhances a broader fan base as well as gives more schools exposure in a FAIR competitive venue. Way better than tossing a coin to hope a small school might get in.

So if you would like to see them classify volleyball like football, should they do that with all sports, such as soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, etc. I think that is what the All A classic is for, for those sports, isn't it? That already allows them to compete for a small school championship.

I would have no problem classifying those sports. The all A classic is a nice venue for small schools, however there isn't an organized comprehensive competition for A - 5A like football. I have had kids play both football and volleyball, and I think the football playoff system is great. It makes money for a lot more schools, it is well attended and exciting for a lot more people, and gives kids the opportunity to play longer and compete with schools their size.

Why not just leave the KHSAA and have your 12 month championship for volleyball at the club level. It is a state wide competition. If you are the best...play whomever is your path regardless of the bracket. The Lone Oak-Greenwood match was exciting as any match this year. Yes...playing club ball would enhance player and team skills..the gap has closed between the 6,7, and 9th regions and the rest of the state.

What makes you say that?. If anything they are pulling away. I don't have time to go through stats from this season, but suffice it to say -

The top 10 teams from 6,7,9 could beat the top 10 from any other region across the board. It wouldn't be close.
