9th Region Officials' Assigning Secretary Position

Featured Replies

I haven't seen a thread on this topic, but have heard that the 9th Region has chosen a new assigning secretary to succeed Tom Haas.

I do not know who got the job, but I do know that Dan Henry and Ernie Liggett did not. Both are longtime high school officials (Dan also worked a lot of college) with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

I know that Liggett is very disappointed that he was turned down. He would have worked extremely hard to train and work hands-on with the present-day officials and the 9th Region would have been a better place with him in charge. It seems to me that he would have been a natural fit for the job.

I personally feel that Ernie possessed the ability to officiate in a preventitive manner, which seems to be a lost art today.

I'm sure that much thought was given to the the selection, and that the committee has their reasons for picking who they have chosen, but feel that they have missed out on a golden opportunity.

The new assigning secretary is Chris Rolf.

The new assigning secretary is Chris Rolf.

What can you tell us about him?

Makes sense. Rolf does the same thing with baseball umpires in N. Ky. so he has a lot of experience.

Ernie is a good person and was a a really good official. Nothing but good things to say about him.

However, a board has to hire someone they think is committed to the job. It's not an easy one as you have coaches and athletic directors plus the KHSAA on one hand and over 100 officials on the other all wanting a piece of you and your time. The board cannot hire someone who cannot make up their mind if they want the job or not. When you go back and forth it raises questions about your commitment. You then make it easy for them when you decide to not show up for an interview. The board has to go with someone they know is 100% committed. Apparently, Ernie was not. I think Ernie made the decision for the board.

If I am not mistaken JJ Wurtz assigns the baseball umpires for NKY high schools.

Rolf has been doing this with basketball and baseball in the amateur ranks for quite a while.

Not questionong his credentials at all, just knew Wurtz had done it for HS baseball. I'm sure the committee chose the best person, because this is a VERY difficult job, especially if it is done correctly. And if it isn't done correctly and can be a real mess.

Good luck to Chris.

Sure. No problem. I just wanted to clarify his experience in this type of position for those who didn't know.
