What's up at Shawnee?

Featured Replies

There have been rumors swirling for some time about the program barely hanging on, especially after the way their season ended last year.

Now, it looks like Shawnee is paring back their 2011 schedule as well — I was told they only had 15 kids show up for summer activities — and may only play their five district games and cancel all non-district games.

Bethlehem was originally scheduled to host Shawnee on Sept. 16, but Shawnee called them to cancel. Bethlehem will now visit Ludlow on Sept. 16.

As of right now, Ludlow is listed as having 11 games on the KHSAA site, but they apparently got the call from Shawnee as well and that's how the late add game with Bethlehem came about. Ludlow's bye week was initially to be Sept. 16, but it will now be Sept. 9, when they were originally scheduled to face Shawnee.

Between the Shawnee Youth Football League's equipment being destroyed in what is believed to be an arson, and now this with the Shawnee varsity team on the heels of last year's debacle, it's been a pretty rough week for sports in that part of Louisville.

I'm pretty sure they have canceled their season.

Talking with some folks in that community the last coaching staff burt a lot of bridges and failed to build relationships. The right coach could go in and have a successful program. I am not talking State Title but I am talking district titles.

Bring Back Kenny Walker!

I respectfully disagree. Shawnee is one of the "have not" Jefferson County schools I don't know how that ever changes. The area of the city that they are in makes them less then desirable as a school option and their lack of athletic success in any program makes them less then desirable as an athletic option. Top that with their abysmal academic reputation and I'm very hard pressed to understand why anyone would WANT their child to attend that school. IMVHO it's one of the JCPS schools that needs to close it's doors.

If that's the case, then they need to be getting on the horn with their districtmates as well so they might have a chance to pick up a game to replace it.

You would think so. The district opponents might be able to match open dates with some of the non-district opponents. You hate to see schools stuck with only 9 games.

Anybody heard anything new about the issues at Shawnee? Still haven't seen anything in the C-J about it.

I've looked in the C-J and they don't have anything. They had some article about 7-on-7's in Jefferson County but that was it. You would think they would have a blurb of something. Does Jason Frakes still work there?

The C-J is too worried about the next Basketball recruit at U of L/UK or what Coach Cal/Rick had for breakfast. Same with the local callin shows. I know this is a basketball state, but football is next. :idunno:

Hasn't posted to his blog in three weeks. :idunno:

Shawnee has not cancelled their season. They had just 15 kids show up to begin workouts and are trying to round some more up by calling all of their eligible male students. Jefferson County is a mess both academically and athletically but the brass at the board/district AD office keep taking home fat checks every two weeks.

That's encouraging. But they have obviously cancelled a couple games since Bethlehem and Ludlow are now playing each other instead of each playing Shawnee.

I'm now hearing that Washington County — one of Shawnee's fellow 2AD4 teams — is looking to pick up a game. Whether these incidents are connected is not confirmed, however, but it seems likely.

After some further investigation, the incidents appear to be connected, as the dates Washington County is looking to fill are either Sept. 9 (its scheduled bye week) or Oct. 21 (the scheduled Shawnee game).
