NCC 8 Beechwood 4

I agree Marley, was Colin Johnson not available for this game?

I am sure he was available, but who pitches Wednesday if you win? Would you bring in Jonson and then start him on Wednesday? Plus, the fact is NCC knocked Johnson out of the game when they played in the All A.

They didn't knock him out of the game in the All A. They scored 4 unearned in the sixth then wheels fell off.

True, the defense let him down in that one but the Breds still hit the ball well enough that he had to be pulled. And the wheels definitely fell off after that. So would you have brought Johnson in today and at what point? Then what would you have done Wednesday if Johnson threw 2 or 3 innings today? If not Johnson, then who do you bring in?

How did Smith do the last time he threw? How many varsity games did he pitch this year? I know he had one really good game recently but not sure he is ready for this game today. Brilz, I could see that as a possibility. How has he been throwing?

Who pitches on Wed. now?

If Doyle pitched the last 3, that is a little embarrassing for Beechwood. Not trying to knock Doyle, just saying Beechwood should have at least scored enough off him to force the Breds to go to Sullivan or Schmitt.

As to Bertke, I am sure Meyerhoff was going to win or lose with his clear #1 starter. Honestly, I would rather have Bertke on the mound than anyone else. If his pitch count was ok, then I agree with Coach M on staying with Bertke. It just didn't work out today. Give the Breds hitters credit for getting it done against a top notch pitcher.

I beleive Cain pitched the first 5 and Doyle threw the last two. Of course, my "half-szheimer's" seems to be kicking into high gear these days. :D

It would be hard to make a case that Meyerhoff did not leave Bertke in too long. He was clearly tiring in the 6th. It was very hot out there today. After Meyerhoff left him in, Bertke hit the next batter, walked the next, and gave up several hits. No discredit to Bertke at all - kid is clearly a total gamer and was giving it his all. But I think he was spent and BW would have been better served to bring in someone fresh. Hold the score to 5-2 or 6-2 and maybe BW still has a shot in the 7th, albeit a long shot. But 8-2 is a hard score to come back from.

Regarding Bertke, I was immensely impressed with his composure on the mound. He stays calm and collected no matter what happens behind him. Doesn't show the slightest sign of upset if an error or passed ball occurs or if he personally struggles. I think what may have impressed me the most was in the 6th inning - no doubt he was disappointed and knew his senior year could be coming to an end, but he always backed up 3B and never stopped hustling. Never any outward sign of frustration. His curveball is outstanding and he can throw it for strikes at will. As I was watching with my buddy Straycat, he pointed out that you will never see Bertke throw an 0-2 pitch near the plate - the hitter will have to hit his pitch. He did a nice job today. Ran out of steam a little at the end, but nonetheless a very solid performance.

Josh is a great example of some one who truly loves the game of baseball and understands the "game" very well.

Bertke pitched great, it was hot and he was done. Believe it or not, Beechwood has other pitchers in their arsenal, besides Bertke and Johnson.

Bertke at 75% is better than anyone else the Tigers have. No disrespect, facts are facts. Johnson was hit hard his last outing against a team that does not hit the ball all that well in Cov Cath. Smith has struggled since beating Boone who was in a bad hitting slump at the time. Both have walked several batters and given up big hits at bad times. If you don't have or can't get the breaking stuff for strikes you will struggle against the better teams. Suchanek (sp?), the freshman, may have been the best option if there was one.

Congrats to NCC. They took advantage of every chance and hit the ball very good this game. Good Luck the rest of the way.

Great season Tigers! A 30 win season is something to be proud of. It just shows how good they hit the ball and played defense early on to get there. Good Luck to all the seniors moving to play or just go to school. Thanks to all the coaches for your hard work and dedication.

Who was the pitcher warming up in the bullpen in the 6th? Sure looked like Meyerhoff was going to bring him in in the 6th since he had him jog all the way in from the bullpen.

And, yes, a 30-win season is impressive.

Whole heartedly disagree G...totally disrespectful of the rest of Beechwood's pitching staff, IMO
