NCC 8 Beechwood 4

Featured Replies

Congrats to New Cath and Beechwood. Game was much closer than score shows. i was rather surprised that Beechwood did not bunt in the fifth or sixth inning with a runner on second and no outs. Beechwood was down one and seemed to me a run might push the momentum Beechwood's way. Keep in mind I've been watching small ball for a long time in Park Hills.

Matt Brennan, a senior.

Why not Johnson at that point? You got to pull out everything you've got at that point because your season is on the line. Of course, I know nothing whatsoever about Brennen - maybe he was the best relief option.

NCC is a good fastball hitting team, as CCH was on Wednesday.

OK, but would a full-strength Johnson fastball not be a better option than a tiring Bertke fastball/curve? Just asking, don't really know. Just seemed like Bertke was really tiring. He's got outstanding control obviously, but in the sixth he appeared to be struggling to hit his spots or throw strikes at times.

Who pitches on Wed. now?

You took the words right out of my mouth. Doesnt make sense to me at all for BW to save anyone or anything when its a one and done. Heck it might rain Wed and Thurs and nobody plays allowing all pitchers the required rest, just sayn........

Go Rebels!

I was at the game---IMO, the difference in this game was decided in the coaches box. NewCath pulled Cain after 5 innings and Bertke was left in to finish. Heat was definitely a factor. It seemed like Bertke had better stuff and much better control of his off-speed pitches, and BW had the momentum through 4 innings. Neither team was really able to put together a string of hits against either starting pitcher, and the early runs were all manufactured or by error (BW's first two runs came on NewCath passed-balls/wild pitches). When Cain got out of the 5th, many on the NewCath side were surprised to see him lifted--even though it was the right thing to do. And they were just as surprised when Bertke was sent out to start the 6th. In the end, NewCath's bats came alive and took advantage of a pitcher who's tank was on "Empty". I felt bad for Josh---Myerhoff's decision cost BW their chance to play on Wednesday. I agree with an earlier post---it's unfair to the rest of the team to say that he (Bertke) earned the right to finish. Josh would be the first person to say "pull me" if it wasn't in the best interest of the team, or if it didn't give them a better chance to win. As for the game overall: it was a great one to watch, and it was a scorcher---NewCath's AD was taking/recording heat index measurements throughout the game. Wednesday's Boone / NewCath match up should be a good contest. New Cath will probably bring Schmits or Sullivan, and I expect Laumann will go for the Rebels. Both teams hit well and play good "D".

In my opinion, no. If I remember right, there were errors in both the 5th and 6th that contributed to the runs being scored. BW did not help themselves defensively. They also left several runners on base and in scoring position. I have to tip my hat to the NCC pitching, they did the job today. JMO

There were errors and also some shaky outfield play...............( left fielder frozen on a ball that could have been caught that went for a double early in the 6th). I do want to comment on Mr. Bertke's composer. As hot as it was and with some defensive lapses not one time did he even look at the offending teammate. Also cooperstown is corrrect....he backed up every base when NCC was hitting the ball hard off him and showed no negative reaction. What a great lesson for younger players and trust me it was a teaching moment for those kids at the game. He has been a class act his entire baseball career with Beechwood and with the Bluegrass Organization. Does anybody know where he is going to school next year?

Josh will be attending Asbury University outside of Lexington. Josh knows the game and always gives his all. He is a role model for the younger BW players. His college coach was at the game yesterday and is very excited about what he is getting to play baseball and be a student. Good Luck Josh.

BW's first run was indeed two SB and WP to score a run. Their second was driven in by a single.

No errors in 5th and 6th. In the 5th, there was a walk, double and single that scored two. In the sixth, there was a lot of hitting for NCC.

In one of those two innings a ground ball was hit right to the SS and he bobbled it and made a bad throw on top of that. Surely that was an error.

Yes, but not in the 5th or 6th. I believe it was in the 4th.
