Answer to jbwill2 Question on Highlands Football

Featured Replies

Your telling us that 3 Highlands QB's where better than Jared I don't think so!

Those were from the beginning of time to 1980, Jared was there in the mid 90's.

I think it would be pretty cool to do a team consisting of players from 1981-20011

I just hope that they spell my name correctly on the news release of the winners....

On a serious note, I do agree with you that a Walk of Fame or a Hall of Fame for Highlands football isn't a good idea. It's not about individual players or even individual teams; it's about the program. And a program is built as much by the contributions of the players that never get mentioned on Friday nights or selected for all state teams as it is by the contributions of those that receive accolades. I've often stated that it's much easier to deal with the grueling conditioning sessions and practices when you know you are going to be the "star". The players that bust their tails while knowing they'll live in obscurity on Friday nights if they even get on the field are the ones that have my admiration.

This post is so spot-on. Let's face it, some kids just don't have the genetics to be stars on Friday nights no matter how hard they work. But how often have we seen those kids come into games when the "star" went down & do remarkable things to help their teams win?

35Bird - After reading L'neck's post (#9), I couldn't help but think of you. I'm sure you would be the first to agree. :thumb:

I absolutely agree with the sentiment of program over individual. I just want to add that I was on an incredible team my 4 years at HHS, and as Coach Herrmann used to say, there was plenty of glory to go around. Now, if we were an 0-10 team, it would be much more difficult. But in our case, our starters were good enough that many of us got some field time, and a big part of that was due to the non-starters' efforts Mon-Thurs. So, not starting on those Birds teams was still glorious. And even if there are no cheering crowds, I would love a chance again to catch a punt on a sunny, Kentucky Wednesday afternoon and get creamed.

Did you actually catch them or did you let them hit the ground and run away from it? JK In all seriousness, you are exactly right in your statements. Being a part of the Highlands football program is and always has been a special thing as far back as I can remember. I was honored to be a part of it and am glad that my kid is going to get the chance to do the same. Just remember what the old coach used to say back then, There is no I in team.

Bad Bill, thanks again for posting this. It has now been added to Highlands-Bluebirds.com under the "Historical Greats" section of the "History" tab.

I sure wish a committee of BGP Highlands experts would complete the set by coming up with a Highlands "all-star" team from 1981-Present!!!!!

There are so many great players. Is there a way to look up the history of players named to the 1st team All State squads, Courier Journal or AP?

I know of one very questionable selection made to the 54-80 team. :D He was probably selected due to his good looks and charm.

Or despite of? Just kidding to that person.
