The Battle of the Catholic's or Cov vs. Lex

Where: Covington Catholic HS

When : Saturday May 7th

Time: First game @ 11am Second game to follow

Should be an outstanding late morning early afternoon of HS baseball hosted by CovCath as the Knights of Lexington Catholic travel North to play Colonels of CovCath.

Ahh, so they are coming north. I had heard they were not coming without the chance to get two games.

What pitchers will be available for CCH?

Lex Cath has had 2 district games this week one going 10 innings, and with the loss of their # 3 Carroll with a broken finger, it will be interesting to see who will pitch. Should be a good day of baseball though. How is the Cov Cath field with all the rain the first part of the week?

Good question. My guess is the boys will be out there working on it before I get out of bed.

The field is fine except for along the left field line. They hve played on it the last two days.

CCH lost game 1 8-2 (I think.) No clue on game 2.

Did anyone find out score of 2nd game ,was that real score of first?? Who pitched for both teams??

I am betting CovCath lost both or OG would of already been on here breaking it down..

KHSAA has LC winning game 2 4-3.

Who pitched for both teams??

Hellman pitched for CCH. He deserved better.

His velocity was down which isn't surprising since he was allowed to throw 120 pitches a week in ago in his first start of the season.

Thus, LC put the bat on the ball. Balls that should have been caught were not and they led to extra batters. One could argue that instead of it being 4-0 after the top of the 1st that AT WORST it might have been 1-0.

Warning: questioning of the coach to follow.

Against a good-hitting team made up mainly of RHers why have a kid who is not a natural outfielder in LF where he was peppered all day? Why not move him to RF and cut down on the number of plays he has to make? He's a kid who has probably never played OF prior to his varsity career.

Why is the 2nd baseman covering on a steal with a LH batter up? Instead of a DP ball the kid puts a ground ball through the open spot and the runner on 1st goes to 3rd?

LexCath's pitcher was taken out when the score was 6-0 in the 6th. CCH subbed in their SR backup catcher who doesn't get much action. In the bottom of the 6th down either 6-0 or 6-1 the kid finally gets a chance to hit but instead he is PH for by the starting catcher. I know some will say you play to win but if that's the argument why take the starter out in the first place? Reward the kid who shows up everyday and never gets in trouble and has been loyal to the team with one darn AB in a game that was essentially lost. It sent a terrible message.

Why yell at the starting pitcher that "you're throwing batting practice" when you allowed him to throw 120 pitches in his first start?

Yeah, I know I have 800 less wins that Krumps but sometimes you have to call them as you see them.

Sounds like the "Battle of the Catholics" went to Lexington?? :D

TO be clear, I have no problem with the young man. He's doing what he can and can't do. I understand (and agree) why he's in the lineup because he's one of the top 4 hitters on the team right now. He has to play. He just has to be put in a position to succeed. I'd have him as my DH and tell him just to worry about hitting. With Arnzen out (another injury to him on Saturday which is a shame) I'd have Grosser at 3B(played it his whole life), Ward or Neinaber in LF (depending on your goal for that day) and Schreiver at DH and let him rake.

Right on Clyde. If he has taken the kid out and puts him back to bat hoping for a chance that is sad. That is why kids get fustrated with coaches. These high school coaches think a kid should never make a mistake. I watched a game Friday and the coach put the hit and run on. The batter was on top of the plate then the pitcher throws the ball in the other batter's box and is maybe ankle high the kid reaches over and swings but can't make contact runner got a bad jump and gets throwed out. Coach makes a comment to another coach that the kid batting is to worried about hitting a home run that he didn't do what was asked of him. Rules are if you are out of the box while hitting the ball you are out. The kid couldn't have hit the ball if he had a 4 foot bat. I know a lot is on the coaches to win and they did when the ball game very easliy but man lead by example.

Before anyone jumps in and says "it's all about winning the game" I'd remind many that we often talk about the "bigger game of life" and lessons learned from sports. I'm not advocating rec ball rules here. The backup knows he's a backup and accepts that(and before anyone speculates, no , he is not my child). Sometimes a message sent is more important than the end result of one meaningless(by tourney standards) baseball game. The message that COULD have been delivered could have a bigger impact on the season . There's not one bad kid on the team so do not ready anything into what I'm saying. I was simply disappointed in that particular move given all of the circumstances.

Didnt mean to get into cov cath soap opera,i'm from Lexington an just trying to find out abt Lex cath for info into district/region play.I assume they hit it pretty well (25 hits)an they only gave up 5 runs ,so their pitching was adequate.Did Martin or Arther pitch? They dont have who pitched in LEX paper
