April 30, 201115 yr Surprised there hasn't been anything on this yet, on paper could be the best one in a while. Love the Machia/Couture fight and anytime you get to see Jose Aldo is a bonus in itself. Main Card Champ Georges St-Pierre vs. Jake Shields - for welterweight title Champ Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick - for featherweight title Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida Jason Brilz vs. Vladimir Matyushenko Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson Prelims on Spike Nate Diaz vs. Rory MacDonald Jake Ellenberger vs. Sean Pierson

April 30, 201115 yr Author GSP almost always gets the home court advantage but don't count out Mark Bocek either, man it seems like every time these guys fight its in Canada, thats almost unfair.
April 30, 201115 yr I think the GSP/ Shields fight will be a great one. I am taking GSP by decision, but I think it will be close and it will be a war on the ground. Shields has to get to GSP and not let himself get out-boxed a la Josh Koscheck. This is the best technical striker Shields has fought in a while, but I do think he will be able to get GSP down and control him in spurts during the fight. The question is can he catch GSP in a submission or will GSP be able to grind it out on the ground? I like Couture over Machida via decision. Aldo will KO Hominick. I also like Brilz by decision and Henderson by decision. I like Nate Diaz and Jake Ellenberger in the prelims. I am ordering this one; it should be a great night of fights.
April 30, 201115 yr Author I am ordering this one; it should be a great night of fights. Top to bottom best I've seen in a while, especially on paper.
April 30, 201115 yr Author And like you I like Couture. Machida is great and for a while looked untouchable until the Rua fights, then lost another to Rampage albeit a little controversial (even though Rampage won the first two rounds). BUT, I see Randy utilizing his wrestling and can see him controlling Machida on the cage for large duration of the bout. Machida is a good counter striker but thats it, he's elusive and he counters. Randy has been known to implement some of the best game plans in the game and he normally sticks to the plan. I can see him out grappling Machida for five rounds, maybe using some of the dirty boxing here and there he has been known for throughout his career. Machida is a lot stronger than most people realize but I still don't see him out grappling Couture and I look for it to be a grappling match because Randy will want it to be a grappling match IMO.
April 30, 201115 yr GSP has won 30 straight rounds.. Impressive.. http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=ki-iole_georges_st_pierre_win_streak_ufc_129_042811
May 1, 201115 yr Author Should be interesting.... Shields has won fifteen straight going back to 2005. GSP 8 since 2007. Shields has beat (in order of opponent toughness IMO) Dan Henderon, Robbie Lawler, Martin Kampmann, Jason Miller, and Paul Daley. GSP has beat (in order of opponent toughness IMO) Matt Hughes, BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, Kos, Alvez, Serra, Hardy. Fitch could be argued to be best he has beaten. Sheilds won a majority of his fights by submission. GSP has rode out most to a decision. I think they will both be on the ground some, but I look for GSP to own the stand up and grind one out over Shields in a bout in which Shields stand up will not that be that effective at all.
May 1, 201115 yr Author Shields and Couture will win! I wouldn't mind to see Shields win although it could possibly interfere with scheduling the biggest fight in MMA history in a fight between GSP and Anderson Silva. Other than that I wouldn't be opposed to it at all, any time a guy goes on a run like that its enjoyable to watch them finally get knocked off. Being up in Canada it would only make it that much sweeter for Shields. BUT, I don't see it happening at all, GSP will put on a clinic in the stand up ala the Kos' fight (Kos much better striker than Shields). If they do get on the ground Shields would have to catch him in something if he wants to win because GSP is not going to let him have his way with him on the ground the way Shields is used to, he has met his match on the ground with GSP.
May 1, 201115 yr Author Few things.... One, it pained me to see the legend Randy Couture get crushed like that but man Machida crowned him with one of the best UFC knockouts of all time. Until we saw Silva KO Belfort with that front kick to the face we had never saw that before, then his long time training partner comes out and executes it even more perfectly against one of the greatest to ever compete in the sport. I swear Steven Segal must be teaching that move to everyone in Brazil, turning them all into killers with that front kick. Jose Aldo is still one of the best pound for pound in the world. Hominick done as good as anyone has against him by far, but other than the last round Aldo looked nearly untouchable. Hominick showed a ton of heart in that fight and thankfully it wasn't stopped. Aldo wrecked his face and the hemotoma he gave Hominick was Hasim Rahman esqe. Lastly, when are we going to see a GSP/Silva fight? Shields done as good as anyone has against him lately and still was out classed the entire bout. Shields managed to give him a good cut and end his perfect round streak, but no way anyone can say he actually challenged St. Pierre. A few times Shields had a leg and tried for the takedown but GSP stuffed it every time. I figured the fight would at least go to the ground a few times, since it didn't GSP owned the standup and fight for that matter as expected. I get why Silva is fighting later in the year in Brazil, I can see why he wouldn't want to pass that up, but if he gets through it please tell me why him and GSP shouldn't fight? To me its the only thing left for the both of them right now, no one in their respective weight classes pose a legitimate threat, so if they fought three straight times it would be better than seeing them go through their entire divisions again, its really getting pointless. Overall though good night of fights, as expected. Shout out to Matyushenko too, had a nice looking KO. Also props to Ben Henderson. Lot of people still think most of the light weights in the WEC were overrated and can't hang but Bocek has been around the Lightweight division in the UFC for a while and has established himself pretty good. Henderson looked pretty good against him and should prove that some of these WEC guys can hang in there just fine with some of the best the UFC has to offer at lightweight.
May 1, 201115 yr Author Watch Machida's sick KO right here. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/686591-ufc-129-video-watch-lyoto-machida-front-kick-ko-of-randy-couture
May 1, 201115 yr Author Mark Hominicks wrecked face after fighting Jose Aldo....... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/686471-ufc-129-results-5-mark-hominick-head-and-eye-photos-after-fight-with-jose-aldo Doctor came in to check it out a couple of times and let him keep going, showed heart of a champion and actually put it too Aldo in the final round but Jose held on.
May 1, 201115 yr Before the crushing blow I saw a couple of feints with his left leg. The initial movement of Machida's kick seems to indicate a kick with his left leg. But he merely uses that movement to gain inertia to power the right leg. I can see where a pro would react to the first motion. What an outstanding move!
