Three years ago when Jacob Doss graduated, not many thought LexCath would be very good because there was no heir apparent except maybe for his younger brother Tanner. But Tanner was challenged in Spring and Fall practices by an upstart named Justin Burke. This seems to occur fairly regularly at LexCath, about every three years. The backup this year has been Tyler Hancock but I'm sure there will be a battle for the position, there always is.

Besides Tyler Hancock, who I think is a junior, are there any promising prospects in the sophomore or freshman class that might contend for next year's job?

Trust me, anyone who saw Burke his freshman year should have known this kid had some talent.

I just remember how fans were worried about who the quarterback would be, no disrespect intended to Burke. There will be a drop at his position I'm sure.

I was kidding around somewhat Knightsdad, it just happened before Burke's sophmore year I happened to tag him on here as a player to watch for in years to come.

Not as good as he is now but he definately had the talent. A lot of players starring for the Knights now were only mediocre their freshmen year and have really improved up to now as seniors. I'd have never thought this whole group would be playing for a State title back their freshman year.

Speaking as one who didn't think LexCath football would ever be as good after Ryan Neff graduated (in 2000), then felt a similar twinge when Jake Doss graduated (in 2003), I can now say that I have great confidence that a talented quarterback will materialize sometime between now and next Fall. Not to diminish the substantial talent that each of these boys brought with them to LexCath, I think that they also all had something else in common. By the way, who do you suppose coaches the QB's at LexCath?

And I'd go on to say that Coach Sphire is a good and experienced coach who works hard and attracts (and retains) players who want to work hard. He also has a keen eye for talent and develops that talent in his players through instruction and mentoring.

 

Justin Burke is great in many, many ways and will certainly be missed at QB for LexCath but someone will step up and take his place and they'll have Justin's example of class and poise to help guide them too.
