Wow, an impressive win. I did not see this coming and missed in my prediction, but it just goes to show that a very lively tourney time is around the corner. Congrats to the Lady Wildcats!

Gallatin County has all the parts-just a matter of them putting it all together. Having the regional tournament in their house has to be added incentive. Nice road win for them.

First quarter told the tale. The Lady Cats took the lead right away, thanks to two three pointers, and at one point held a 20-10 lead before settling for a 20-12 lead after one.

 

From there, the game was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way. Oldham frequently rallied to within 5, 4, and even 2 points, but never fully caught up. Gallatin stretched it out with FTs in the final minute or so.

 

We figured Gallatin was the favorite in the game, now that they are healthy. (They were not when they lost to Oldham by 16 in December), and in particular since the tallest Oldham starter is 5'9" - and Ericka Hardin is the point guard. With a midget front line battling the 5'10" Davis and 6'0" Hill down low, it figured to be a tough night for the Lady Colonels.

 

But surprisingly, it was not the big girls that won the game. Gallatin had just a +3 edge on the board (Pegasus' Sports unofficial rebounding stats) as Oldham repeatedly scrapped for the rebounds. It was Gallatin's outside shooting that won the game. Brooke Dossett and sister Hannah Dossett, along with Mikkah Hignite were the differences for most of the game, although I was impressed by how Davis took over in the final quarter after Hill went out with a shoulder injury. (it popped out of the socket, but it was unclear after the game if the injury was really severe or not...but she did not come back to play).

 

Oldham was its own worst enemy from the floor, missing more layups than I'm sure coach Mullins wants to ever see again. There were so many missed shots from point-blank range, that making a few may well have changed the game's outcome.

 

But Oldham missed a lot of shots...their offense managed 72 attempts, more than enough, but they connected on just 29%. Emily Melton - who has been on a tear since the last Gallatin game, hitting 48% of her threes during that 12-game stretch, and only shooting below 33% in a game once during that time frame - suffered through a horrendous 0 for 10 night beyond the arc.

 

Congrats to the Lady Cats, who earned a very nice road win. Lady Colonels - find that shooting eye, and you can get right back on track...
