An argument could be made that the Tigers underpaid for Johnny Damon. He still got $8 million, but that was a pretty big pay cut for Damon & he was coming off of a good year in NY (.282, 24 HR).

 

Damon made $13M from 2006 - 2009.

No way Jeter wanted to play anywhere else, and no other team was looking to go above 12 mil per. He's 37, coming off of his worst season, based on what hes going to give you he is probably worth about 8 mil per max. The only reason he is getting 17 is because he is Mr. Yankee, which is fine. But, Jeter has got his deals in the past. Lets not act like hes never got paid, I mean seriously, the Yankees have been very good to him over the years. Thats not even counting all the endorsements and revenue Jeter can make and has made just by being the Yankee captain. You have Jeter play his entire career with the Orioles or Pirates, then he amounts to a Miguel Tejada or the same as A Rod before he became a Yankee. Since he got to represent the most powerful sports franchise in world, Jeter became a hero, I'm talking the Jordan deal, everything. If Jeter doesn't play in New York, no way does he become Nike/Jordan Brands signature face of baseball, not to mention all the cologne's, or what ever else he now produces or has marketed. So to act like the Yankees couldn't have underpaid to keep Derek Jeter and get him is unfathomable. He didn't want to play anywhere else, and no other teams wanted to even come close to what they knew the Yankee's would end up paying. So basically you have two sides knowing what the outcomes going to be but when one could clearly make a fair business proposition they instead gruesomely over pay one of their guys, yet again. They did him another huge favor and once again demonstrated how they can just throw money at anybody they want like it doesn't even matter. No way Jeter should have made more than 15 million dollars, he should have got a deal more around the 10mil range IMO. With what he is making now, he is still the highest or second highest paid middle infielder in the game. Is Jeter seriously still one of the top two guys at second and short?
