Hard to figure out where to start here. Mason scores early, Greenup marches down the field on a long drive and ties it up. Looked like one of those nights, but Mason with another quick strike after getting a short field.

 

Royals' special teams took over. Scored twice after successive recoveries of onsides kicks. Greenup had no answer for Mason's skill players. Huge game for QB Pawsat who was 8-11 for 170+ and 3 TDs, also leading rusher with 80 yards and two more scores on the ground. A late Musketeer TD in the first half made it 28-14.

 

Jordan Gilbert returned the opening 2nd half kickoff for a TD , Royals recovered another onsides kick and scored again. Game pretty much over at that point as Greenup is not built for the quick strike and was not stopping anything the Royals threw at them.

 

I was very impressed with Greenup's Cory Lyle tonight. Well over 200 yards on something like 32 carries. I would love to see him play at the next level.

 

A couple of players dinged for Mason County tonight; hopefully they can heal up over the next week or two.

 

Finally, a shout out to recpark. It was great talking with you tonight.:thumb:

Good game summary, mcpapa. Lyle runs hard and always falls forward when tackled. Mason made Greenup pay for every mistake. Pawsat's biggest game this year. Gilbert and Harris looked awfully good too.

Greenup made to many mistakes in this one and Mason took advantage of everyone of them! I said in the prediction thread that Greenup would have to play perfect to stay in this game...and we didn't. Congratulations to Mason County, you guys have a heck of a team. Musketeers, keep your heads up, learn from this one and get ready for next week.

McPapa very nice seeing you tonight. Mason is a very good team. Pawsat is an athlete. Good luck in the post season and ill see you on the hardwood. Always love coming to Mason county. Good people class act.

I think there were a few posters on the 'updates' thread last night not happy about Coach B doing onside/pooch kicks. Let me give you a little history... I don't remember the year, but when the Royals travelled to Boyle County (then head coach Chuck Smith for the Rebels) about 6-7 years ago, the Rebels were handling the Royals fairly well. Now keep in mind, Chuck Smith and Coach B go way back. Coach Buchanan played for Smith and Larry French at Mercer and the ties/friendship runs deep. Anyway, the Rebs were up by at least 50, 4th quarter and they do a frickin' pooch kick and recover it. Many didn't understand why he would do that, 1) leading with a big score and 2) Coach B was 'supposed' to be a friend. Well, that is what you do when you are preparing to win a state championship. Its lilke practicing the special things you may need when it comes down to it in the big game and Coach Smith needed to have his team prepared on executing the 'pooch' kick. But trust me, it made a lot of us Royal fans ticked!! :irked:

 

Coach B I'm sure came away from that game knowing, when you have a lead and you're going in to playoff time, you practice on those special things that just might mean the difference between a loss and state title.

 

I just love those RAGIN' ROYALS!! Good luck in the playoffs and be determined to make it to the big dance. It's yours... take it!! :thumb:

My take on it during the game was that it was a defensive strategy. GC can't score if they don't have the ball. GC is a good team. They had the potential to come back until late in the game. A couple of good plays by GC, a couple of mistakes by Mason and, boom, we have a game much closer than comfortable.

You can't make mistakes and win. GC's Achilles Heel all year is mental and physical mistakes.

They are a well coached team. On side kicking is a great move by them. Keeping the ball out of GC's hands and keeping them from running the clock. It's no secret about Greenups poor D.

I need to say one more thing about this game, then it's time to move on to the playoffs.

 

I was extremely pleased at the lack of yellow laundry on the field. Only one holding call against Mason County (about 30 seconds after I told my wife that the Royals hadn't been flagged for one all game).

 

And credit to Greenup as well. Last year they responded poorly to getting behind in the game. Not the case this year. Clean, hard-fought game. As previously mentioned, Greenup made too many mistakes - particularly on special teams - and couldn't keep Mason out of the end zone.

 

Time for the post-season!
