Sheldon Clark 22 Belfry 6

Featured Replies

This game turned on a dime. Belfry marched straight down the field for the first score, then stopped SC on a 3 and out after a long KO return. The Pirates then threaten to go up 2 scores after a long drive, but can't punch it in after a penalty moved them back. Sheldon Clark's QB then breaks a big run from midfield before the half. Score at the break 7-6 Cards.

Coach Hager and the Cardinal faithful had to like what they saw in the 2nd half. It was all Sheldon Clark's defense along with enough offense to limit Pirate possessions.

SC plays for the district title next week at Pike Central.

If Pike Central pulls out the victory you're looking at a three-way tie for the championship (assuming Belfry beats East Ridge). That would make for an interesting tiebreaker.

Congratulations to the Cardinals, they forced their will on the Pirates, and that is 2 in a row for them. Sheldon Clark defense in the 2nd half was the story of the game, nice job by them They made all the adjustments they needed to make and if I am not mistaken Belfry didn't have a first down in the 2nd half. It was very impressive and Coach Hager and staff deserve all the credit.

Sheldon Clark also took advantage of Belfry's D by spreading the field in the shotgun, single back formation and then letting their quick backs pick their way through. Belfry was running their base 5-2, but when SC lined up in the spread, they were flaring their DE's out about 7 yards and dropping them back a couple yards off the ball, much like they played successfully against Pike Centrals spread offense. SC wasn't near the passing threat as PCC though. This left Sheldon Clarks front line to block 3 down linemen and 2 linebackers and they were able to consistently move the ball and they broke a couple of long TDs to seal it.

It was a disappointing loss for the Pirates, who looked to be hitting their stride coming into the game. They still have a lot of work to do before the playoffs roll around. Hopefully they will keep their heads up, learn from it and get ready for the task at hand. There is a lot of football yet to be played.

Radio announcer said that Belfry had 5 yards total offense in the 2nd half. Anyone who slept on Sheldon Clark when they were 2 - 4 had better watch. This team played a brutal schedule and can play with and beat any team in AAA.

Sheldon Clark was the better team on Friday and they definitely dominated the Pirates in the 2nd half. I believe in giving credit where credit is due, and the Cards deserve all the credit for their performance. What I am about to post is in no way meant to take away from that, but I want to pass it along.

I heard a rumor that Belfry's headsets weren't working Friday so there was no communication from the booth to the sidelines. I don't know if there is any truth to it because I haven't talked to anyone from the staff, but if true, that is a tough break. Good teams have to overcome obstacles like that and I don't know if it would have made much difference, but it might have contributed.

Question: Can you use cell phones in that situation? I don't know what the KHSAA's rules say about electronic communication.

Tie Breaker Example

I've heard all kinds of speculation about the tie breaker in this district IF Pike Central could beat Sheldon Clark next week.

After crunching the numbers, I don't think it would make any difference and this district will finish 1. Sheldon Clark, 2. Belfry, 3. Pike Central no matter if PCC beats Sheldon Clark or not.

The tie breaker lets each team pick ONLY 4 teams they have beaten and you get a point for each win on those 4 teams' records. You can count out of state and district wins, but you can't count either of the teams you are tied with.

In this example, I had to speculate a little about how many victories each team would have by year end. So this could possibly change a little by week 11. With that in mind, here is how I think it would work out...

Sheldon Clark would have wins over Lawrence County(8), Frankfort (7), East Ridge (5) and Pikeville (6) which will get them 26 points.

Belfry would have wins over Cov Holy Cross (5), Letcher (2), Whitley (4), East Ridge (5), Pikeville (6), Thats 20 points. Even if they beat Johnson Central (7) that would only be 23 points.

Pike Central would have wins over Phelps (3), Boyd Co (1), Shelby valley (3), Knott (0), Tolsia (3) and East Ridge (5). They would have 14 points.

In this case, it would be 1.Sheldon Clark, 2.Belfry, 3.Pike Central.

That is exactly the way it will finish if Sheldon Clark beats PCC to win the district outright.

That is a good question. I will try to look up that Watusi.

Congrats to SC that is another good win by Coach Hager and his staff.

I called this one. People that look at SC's record are going to be fooled. This team is good enough to get to the final 4 or carpet!

This may be true, but I was in the pressbox and at times above it and they were talking to someone on the other end of their headsets. I think some may have been working because there were Belfry coaches coming and going, but they were talking to someone.

I agree they could make it to Bowling Green.
