I think it was a classy move by them to go away from the Colonel Reb mascot a few years ago, and I think the Bear is something that is unique to the SEC and south in general. I believe bears are more common in the Pacific Northwest than in Mississippi. I can’t agree that bears are unique to the SEC. Now Hotty Toddy’s, maybe? FC Posted October 15, 2010 Share Posted October 15, 2010 I’m sorry, but all that deliberation and debate to pick something as original as a bear seems a bit much. There is probably 10-20 teams with a bear as their mascot in the NCAA. They shouldn’t have had to change it in the first place IMO. No mascots that refer to American Indians, no references to the Confederacy, the next group will be animals in general protested by PETA.
