Mason County and St. Patrick has not seen eye to eye over the last couple of years as evident by the fact as the two teams not playing each other. Now one of Mason's best players, McKayla Likins, started school at Mason and then transferred to St Patrick. She played summer team ball with Mason but played AAU with the St. Patrick girls. Not knowing any of the details, I wonder how she can be possible eligible after playing for Mason for two or three years. Anyboby have any information?

I think she was a freshman last year and did play varsity for Mason County. So there is no good reason for her to be eligible to play at St Pat. If the rules are followed, she will have to sit out a year and will not be eligible to play until her Junior season.

Could it be possible her family sent her to St.Pats to get a good education? Maybe if you leave a public school to go to a private school the rules change. I don't know. I hope she has a great career with Coach Douglas. I am just jealous she doesnt coach my daughter. Good Luck McKayla.

Education may be better or maybe not but I do know you have to pay a good penny to attend St. Patrick. They don't have schlorships do they? I live in Maysville and I know St Pat has fought hard to keep the doors opened which means probably higher tution for all students so how can a talented basketball player attend free?

Private schools can offer financial aid but I think it's capped at 50% for Catholic schools.

Not questioning this Clyde, but do have to inquire. What does financial aid mean exactly? Do they have to pay it back or is it just a reduction in the rate? If it is the latter I find issue with that as it could be construed the same as offering a scholarship.....

Usually it involves trading some tuition dollars for work around the school. It's not uncommon at CCH or NDA to see kids (and their parents) doing work around the school.

Trust me my daughter goes to a private school in the Covington Diocese and some of her friends tuition is cut more than half based on their families finances. Just curious and I don't have the facts but I would bet less than 10% of St.Pats families pay full price. Just a guess now...

I stand corrected. I just checked the CCH website and it said that $182k in aid was awarded last year with an average award of $3300. Tuition is about $6k.

The rules are the same for public or private. If you change schools after you have played varsity (unless you are a middle school student), you would have to sit out a year when changing schools. The only exception is if you move out of one school district and into another. So, unless the family has moved out of the Mason County School district, she would have to sit out a year.

I do know Catholic schools have place where students apply for tuition assistance money and if they quailify the money is payed from this outside source to the school. Something like a United Way type of fund but for Catholic Schools. So the school still gets their money for the student.

 

I have to say that the title of this thread is a little misleading..... the "hard fellings" part. I think just because a student changes schools doesn't mean that there are hard feelings between the schools? Is it just some people can't (or won't) understand that maybe a teenage girl or her family wants a change whether it be for education, or athletics, whatever their reason(s)? That is their decision for whatever reason.

I think the hard feelings part is from the Mason fans possibly losing a good player to St Pat. Usually they are getting the players not losing them.
