They scored on 3 plays today that covered over half the field. I think that trumps the pass game.

I did expect Greenup to have an alternate strategy, particularly with how good I've heard their QB is at throwing and how good their receivers are this year (Stringfellow, Hamilton, Hampton). Maybe they do have another style in the bag of tricks but just didn't use it this evening? The clear advantage that Greenup had over Ashland was power. If they had tried to spread it out on Ashland, then the Ashland's speed advantage had may have come into play a little more.

Something that confuses me about Ashland is their lack of a kicker. The radio crew tonight even commented about how they were squib kicking the kickoffs. They have a good soccer program at Ashland. I would think they could find a kicker from there to come out and kick on Friday nights. I understand they succeed against our area teams more often that not when they go for 2, but if they are serious about trying to compete with the Northern Kentucky schools who can match them athlete for athlete, is going for 2 every time really that good of a strategy?

Those three big plays came in the first half when their legs were fresh.

I was wondering the same thing about Ashland's kicking game.

Greenup Co should be a very good team this year. They have boasted this sr. class all year. I don't know why everyone is on the Cat's D. 66% of the Muskie's team is sr's. Great offensive game by both teams. But once behind it's hard to win late in the game with the wishbone. They will have to pass some this year. Or your going to see 10/11 in the box all the time on defense. But if Greenup ever gets the lead late in the game it could be hard to score on them. Going to be a fun year.:clap: Congrats to the Tomcats. Keep working Greenup!

I think the Musketeers may be getting a little more respect after this game. They just need to step up and close the deal. I dont think anyone on the Ashland side of the field thought the game would be tied into the 4th quarter, that GC would be down only one score with 4 minutes left on the clock... or that the GC Offensive line would be as succesful as predicted...Greenup had over 300 rushing yards against a team that everyone thought (except loyal GC Fans) would walk away with the game. The turnovers in the last minutes of the game were the deciding factor in how this one turned out. Get some rest Musketeers and get back to work. Congratulations Tomcats.

Two different styles of play, GC was bigger and stronger, Ashland took to the air. Fumbles and penalties played a role. GC made more mistakes which cost them going down the stretch.

 

I think Greenup is much improved and will be hard to beat. If they can eliminate the errors they will win a lot of games.

 

Ashland's defense was soft early - but give GC credit for that. Coach Hart said (radio interview) adjustments were made at half-time that made it harder for GC in the second half. The T-cats will face some very good running teams this year. They had better develop a good run defense.

Got a feeling the Tomcats will straighten out the defense! First game for both teams. Crazy things happen. Coaches will work on whats wrong with the offense and defenses. I think Doc was right in a earlier post. I would love to see this game in a few weeks.

The JC/Boyle game sounded like a barn burner. You are correct when you say Ashland has to get their run defense operating on a much higher plane if they want to compete in 5A. But, I take some comfort in knowing Coach Hart's teams have always started slow. I sure won't count them out yet. I expect big improvements between week 1 and week 2.

Greenup County's secret weapon isn't so secret anymore. Congratulations to the Offensive Lineman!!
