Ashland 44 Greenup County 28

I just do not understand why GC has to run the darn wishbone? The wishbone is a great offense to teach Pop Warner kids, but it is absolute trash in high school or at higher levels. Just ask Army football how well the Bone works.

Did Greenup not have over 350 yards rushing against a team many are saying can compete for a 5A state title this year?

Sure, it would be tough for ARMY to be successful at the D-1 level running the bone, but do you realize how many MEGA-successful HIGH SCHOOL programs that win every year (including state titles) running basically this same "Pop Warner" offense as you called it...

* Belfry

* Russell (not 'bone,' but still a run-oriented 4-back offense)

* Corbin

* Rockcastle Co. (state finalist)

* Danville

* Johnson Central

* St. X (split-back veer)

* Boone Co.

...and the list goes on and on.

Myself, I'm a spread guy...but that's because of where I am and the athletes we get year to year. If I have the hosses up front like Greenup has with TOUGH running backs, there's no doubt I'd be in a full-house backfield and running the ball down people's throats more often than not.

(And at the D-1 level, look at what GEORGIA TECH has been able to do in VERY short order running more or less a 'bone' system. And ask NOTRE DAME -- with their perennial top-10 recruiting classes -- how easy it was to defend NAVY running the bone to near-perfection when they beat them on their home field).

...don't worry. The Greenup coaches will have an alternative plan for how to come from behind by the time the REAL season starts (district games). Remember, the way the system is in Kentucky, all these non-district games are basically SCRIMMAGES.

Just ask Army football how well the Bone works. Once GC was down with 4 + mins to go there was no way their grind it out O could put points up quick. Marsh had big runs in the first when he was fresh, but didn't see the break away late. Sorry I think the system failed tonight, the players played and the coaches coached, but the system was not what was needed to hand a very beatable Ashland the loss.

I'm of the mindset that it's not really what you run it's how you run it. Personally I'm more of a spread guy, for the reason that you stated. I do like an offense that is more capable of producing big plays at a quicker rate, but then again if you're playing from behind with not a lot of time left does your scheme really matter that much? Would Greenup have won the game running June Jones' Run and Shoot? I wasn't at the game, but I wouldn't assume so. They had success against Ashland running the scheme their coaches know and statistically it seems to fit their personnel.

You can say that a run oriented offense cannot make a comeback (I'm sure they have), but Greenup's coaching staff would probably tell you that it would be hard to comeback against them because they run the ball so well and can run out the clock. In the first week I would imagine that Greenup does not have their entire passing game perfected since they seem to be so run oriented. If this were week 8 I think they may have a reason to panic a little more.

I see your point but I don't think the system failed Greenup. I actually think it seems like it was one of the reasons they had a chance to beat Ashland. JMO, not arguing just giving my 2 cents. :thumb:

My question is how good would Army, Navy or Air Force be without the Flexbone? You guys remember when Air Force was so good earlier this decade and then decided to go away from the Bone for a few years? Dobbs is very good for Navy, but how many games would they win in a Pro-style system? I think you have to go with your personnel and run a system that suits them. I think that is what Greenup seems to be doing.

Wasn't it kind of a shocker that they played Ashland so close?

I think the only shocking thing to the Greenup Fans was that they lost this one!
