What does Somerset need to do to improve in

Somerset was one game away from a perfect season last year, they just need to work hard and stay together.

On offense the bulk of the skill position players return. Senior quarterback Erik Manning returns after throwing for over 2300 yards and 28 touchdowns, he also rushed for over 550 yards and 7 scores. Derrick Jackson was expected to be the leading rusher last season after gaining 761 yards and 12 TDs as a sophomore before being injured in the preseason last year, he'll be back at full strength. At receiver Storm Wilson returns for his junior season after having a 1000 yard, 11 touchdown junior year along with senior JP Henderlight who had 500 yards and 6 touchdowns and tightend Clayton Stringer. The offensive line will be the biggest question mark as all 5 starters from last year graduated. The lone returning player on the line that played significant minutes will be junior Taylor Speaks who made 1 start at center and split snaps at right tackle, he will move to left tackle. The line will be smaller and faster than last season's group.

 

The defense should be very solid and should be the backbone of the team. The defense allowed only 14 points a game last season and returns 8 starters and several key backups. Included in that group is junior Trey Slaughter who recorded 75 solo tackles from his defensive end spot. 3 of 4 members of the secondary return, 2 of 3 starting linemen and 3 of 4 linebackers. The 3 players moving into the starting lineup saw a lot of minutes last season.

 

If the offensive line gels and everyone stays healthy Somerset should be a force in 3A again this season.

Sounds like they will be ready to make another run.

What's the schedule look like this year? Have they made a decision on what game will be played first in the Correll Bowl this year? I know there was flip in games last year due to travel time for Harlan County. This year Harlan County plays Pulaski and Somerset plays Southwestern. Just wondering who will play first.

The schedule should be the same as last season except Somerset will play Lynn Camp in the Pioneer Bowl instead of Knox Central and Southwestern in the Correll Bowl instead of Pulaski. The rest of the schedule will include home games against Russell County, Estill County, Wayne County, Jackson County and Casey County and road games against Danville, Taylor County and Garrard County.

 

As for the Correll Bowl I'm not sure. I would think Somerset/Southwestern would play first again since Harlan County is again making the trip over but I don't know 100% for sure.

I checked with Coach Lucas last night and the Somerset-Southwestern game will be played first this season.

Somerset will be tough, but I think they will take a small step back from last year. They return plenty enough talent to get to Bowling Green again, but I think the East will be much better overall this year with teams like Somerset, Mason Co, Sheldon Clark, Belfry, & maybe even Breathitt Co, Russell, & Pike Central fighting to go to Bowling Green.
