Not sure how that's possible since they just signed a new "exclusive" contract with AT&T...

It's USA today. You know what they say. Where there is smoke, there's fire. They wouldn't report something that was impossible. They know more than any of us about the situation.

Not sure what to do. Upgrade is due in August. Do I wait to see if the iPhone is coming or do I just go with the Droid?

I was planning on getting the Droid X in a couple weeks until I heard this. My suggestion? Wait it out.

Never said they didn't, just no way does this happen with the new contract in place. AT&T would be moronic to allow this to happen.

Again, do you think this would be reported if it isn't possible? AT&T has no control whatsoever over the situation.

If Apple signed an exclusive contract with AT&T, then yes they do.

It's been reported before this numerous times, and yet no iphone for Verizon. :idunno:

If AT&T had any control, of course this would be shot down. If experts are saying it's possible I think they know. I haven't seen the "contract" issues discussed in any of the multiple articles I've read about it today, that is a non-issue. If it was, I would have read about it by now. Find me an article on the "new exclusive contract" that forbids Apple to sign with another company in the beginning of 2011.

If true I really hope Verizon offers better service for the Iphone then AT&T. I love my Iphone but AT&T's service for it is TERRIBLE! I use to never have a complaint about AT&T's service until I got the Iphone. I was in Destin several weeks ago and my phone showed full signal on 3G but I couldn't make a call, send a text and the data wasn't working. I tried turning it off and back on but nothing. Still full signal but couldn't do anything. It's happened a couple of times since. I have had times where the signal strength would go up and down and I would never move. You could watch the bars go all the way up then all the way down until it said Searching...

Not to mention they have probably less then 5% 3G coverage.

^^ If iPhone comes to Verizon it will be on their 4g network they are developing.

Interesting.

That would imply AT&T will be the exclusive U.S. carrier of the iPhone until 2012, which comes at odds with persistent rumors that Apple’s contract with AT&T expires this year and that a Verizon iPhone is due this fall. However, Engadget’s Patel notes that the contract could very well have been amended since then. Also, it’s unclear whether the contract would only apply to a specific model of the iPhone (first- or second-generation, for example). If that were the case, it would still open doors for Verizon to carry a brand new model of the iPhone.

Rumors of a Verizon iPhone gained more credence in March when The Wall Street Journal, which has a solid track record for Apple rumors, was tipped about a CDMA-compatible iPhone scheduled for mass production in September. CDMA is the standard used by Verizon.

^ Thank you Crash. I also remember reading somewhere that Apple could simply make a different model of the phone as stated in Crash's post that could be exclusive to a different carrier. Apple may want to be the first on Verizon's 4g and their new LTE technology coming out.

If you want it that bad just get one unlocked. :) I have no idea why Apple ever signed with just AT&T in the first place. Didn't make any sense to me.

You can't unlock an iPhone for Verizon. It's impossible they run on different networks. Verizon is the only provider that runs on CDMA which isn't compatible with the iPhone. It's like trying to run a windows program on a Mac. Just isn't going to work.
