I think you will eventually see a shift in the United States from school teams to club teams, much like the way sports are in Europe (and all around the globe). Most of the clubs originate on the local level in Europe so in that way it wouldn't be too much different than today. The big difference would be cost to play, which would ultimately send some higher-level players to play with higher-caliber clubs.

I think you may be giving too much credit to the players of the past, me being one of them. Who on the bench has not had the thought they would like a chance, and the only way they are going to get it is if one of the full time players gets hurt or really messes up and the coach puts you in for them. No one wants to see a team mate get hurt, at least I hope not. But mess up and give me a chance, that's a pretty human thought to have. If your on the bench and not playing and you don't want a chance to play........ You just need to make sure your prepared to play when you get your chance. If the starter gets benched it is just for some pine time to think more than likely, but it opens the door. Make sure your ready to walk through that door and perform.
