St. Xavier 4 Covington Catholic 3 (LIT)

Featured Replies

CovCath comes back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game but then loses the game in the bottom of the seventh, on a unearned run.

Adam "the 100 pitch count man" Warning pitched 7 1/3 innings of outstanding baseball. Warning struck out 9 and walked only 1, while throwing 112 pitches before giving way to Schlagbaum who coached the hitter into a ground ball but the ball was muffed and allowed the winning run to score!

CovCath will play Shelby County @ 10am Saturday morning at Louisville St. Xavier but will not play a second game on Saturday at the request of Louisville St. Xavier due to a large fund raiser they are having at their school.

I will give a better report sometime late Saturday afternoon.

St. X is hosting but requested not to play any games Saturday night? Seems a bit odd.

Sounds like a great game.

Good for Warning. Glad to see him pitching well.

The Good: Coming back for being down by a score of 3-0 to tying the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning. Adam Warning impressed the heck out of me as in the bottom of St. X sixth even after throwing 90 pitches after 5 innings he struck out two of the three he faced in that sixth inning.

The Bad. Adam got the 1st batter out in the bottom of the St. X seventh but with the bases loaded and only 1 out, Krumps took Adam out and brought in Schlagbaum who with a 1-1 count got the batter to hit a ground ball to second where the error was made.

The Ugly: CovCath left 7 men on and had chance after chance to win this game. In fact in the fist inning they left the bases loaded without scoring a run. In the fifth CovCath again loaded the bases and with no outs were only able to score one run.

Pee Wee's Place Offensive play of the game: Top of the 6th and Stein is on third and Siemer is on first with two outs. Siemer tries to steal second and indeed beats the ball and as the St. X infielder tries to put the tag on Siemer, Stein heads home with a SB himself to score the second run of the game for CovCath. Warning then hits a single and knocks in Siemer to tie the game.

BAWAC Inc.Defensive play of the game: Nothing sticks out at all and other than the error on the last play of the game, CovCath only on one other error which didn't really hurt them.

Grubers Grill star of the game: My pick is Adam Warning. Not only for his pitching but more importantly for the emotion he showed. In the sixth after striking out the last batter in the inning, Adam jumped off the mound with his fist pumping the air around him. Just a huge shame he lost this game. Adam I give you a huge Theoldguy tip of my cap and young man I salute you. Outstanding game indeed

CovCath pitching:

Warning (L) 117 pitches 7 1/3 innings pitched 31 PA 9 hits 4 runs 3 earned runs 2 walks and 9 K's

Schlagbaum 2 pitches 1 PA

CovCath hitting:

Siemer 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit 1 walk 1 K and 1 sb

Warning 4 AB 1 hit 1 rbi 1 walk and 1 K

Klein 4 PA 1 hit 1 rbi and 2 walks

Gerwe 4 PA 2 K's and 1 hbp

Martin 4 PA 1 hit 1 K and 1 hbp

Lankheit 4 PA and 3 K's

Severson 3 PA 1 hit and 1 walk

Schlagbaum 3 PA 1 hit

Stein 2 PA 1 K 2 runs scored and 1 FC

Grosser 1 PA and 1 walk

Note: The only reason to report the below, is to tell you what kind of night the CovCath Baseball team had! Not using this as an excuse at all just reporting a fact!

The game ended around 11:15 pm and CovCath then had a 10am game on Saturday Morning. At around 4am at the Hotel they were staying at, the Hotel fire alarm went off and the team was forced out into the rain for around :45 minutes or so and since they had to get up at around 7/7:30 am for the 10 am game they really didn't get much sleep.

Yes it was a very good and exciting game.

Yea I know! Seems strange as last year CovCath played Lexington Christian on Friday night, Louisville St. X on Saturday morning at 9am and then Apollo at 11am. St. X hosted the same events as last year including the grade school track event on Friday night which left hardly any parking for the baseball fans.

St. X played Thursday night and Friday night, then played after the CovCath vs. Shelby County game. Seems they told the CovCath Coaches that they would have no one around for the late game between CovCath and Tates Creek because of their large fund raiser this year! :idunno:

BTW in the latest ranking for Baseball Louisville St. Xavier was ranked sixth.

Great job Adam, after watching him this past winter I knew he was going to have a great year. Keep it going young man.

Warning should of seen the mound last year. Why in the world they sat him over a couple of others is beyond me!

I ask that same thing, but TOG had said that they did not need him.:idunno:

Out of the 250 innings pitched last year,

Isler: 69 innings 12-0

Nutini 59 innings 5-3

Krumme 43 1/3 innings 8-0

Gerwe 25 innings 4-0

Shumate 24 1/3 innings 3-1

The rest Warning, Hellman, Schlagbaum, Martin, Darner and Klein threw from 8 innings to 3 inning each. So who from the above list of Isler, Nutini and Krumme who BTW are all playing NCAA D1 or D3 baseball, who do you take innings away from?

On a side note it was good to see Patrick Krumme at the CovCath vs Louisville St. Xavier Friday night. PK will be having Tommy John surgery in the next couple of weeks or so. PK told me he was throwing in a game and just felt his elbow pop. When I asked about his grades he told me that it was tough at first but he has settled in and is doing great. Outstanding young man.

Who pitched for St. X? How did Matthew Spalding do for St. X?

I understand what you are saying, but why throw Shumate more last year than Warning when Warning has pitched more inning this year. I have watch both pitch this past summer and Warning was far the better pitcher not saying Shumate is bad but Warning was better and in most coaches eyes he is still better so what happen last year 24 inning for Shumate and 3inning for Warning to me that is a big different. The best of luck to PK, he a great kid.

Not my call, but you can ask Krumps! My guess is he thought last year Shumate was better.:idunno: I am just quoting my stats back at you.

Shumate went 1 1/3 innings 5 PA 1 hit 0 runs against Scott (CovCath won 9-4) on March 28th. He was one of five pitchers to throw that day with the others being Darner, Gerwe, Martin, and Krumme.

Shumate went 1 inning 6 PA 1 K 0 runs against HHS (CovCath won 1-0) on March 30th. Shumate earned a save while Nutini got the victory.

Shumate went 1 inning 3 PA 0 runs against Ryle (CovCath won 4-2) on April 4th, Shumate earned a save while Isler got the victory.

Shumate went 2/3 of a inning 9 PA 3 hits 5 runs scored 0 earned runs 1 walk 1 K's against Dixie (CovCath won 10-7) on April 9th. Isler got the win but Darner and Gerwe pitched also.

Shumate went 2/3 of a inning 7 PA 1 K 2 walks 2 hbp 4 runs scored 4 earned runs against Boone County (CovCath won 18-7 (6 inns) on April 15th. Krumme got the victory.

Shumate went 1 inning 7 PA 3 hits 1 walk 1 K 2 runs scored 2 earned runs against Holy Cross (CovCath won 8-4) on April 16th. Gerwe got the victory and Klein pitched also.

Shumate went 3 innings 11 PA 1 hits 1 walk and 3 K's 0 runs scored against St. Henry (CovCath won 21-5 (5 inns) on April 18th. Shumate got the victory and Martin and Warning pitched also.

I am not going to do the entire season:

I think that after the HHS, Ryle and Boone games to start off the season he earned Krumps trust so he pitched more. As the season progressed Schlagbaum got that trust and Slag was then the man who came out to close up.

This year that closing job belongs to Klein. As I have stated time after time, a lot of College Coaches just don't realize how good and I mean very good Matt Klein is!

The Coach that can get Matt signed will I promise you, thank me later. The kid is nothing but a very, very good solid baseball player, be it on the mound, behind the plate, at third base and with the bat in his hand!
