Newport 9 Newport Catholic 4

Featured Replies

Wow! Newport pulls the upset for only their second victory of the season.

Good gracious! Nice win for Newport. There truly is no way to put forth a reasonable guess on who will advance to region this year. The 9th is about as wide open as its been is quite a few years.

Very true. This NCC team is hard to figure out. They can beat basically in the region, but also can lose to anyone in the region. They have now lost to Ludlow and Newport, two teams that most people would have thought they would have beat. Two good wins for both those programs against them.

Baseball in general and specifically HS baseball should not be looked at by 1 game. Who pitched, who did the coach play etc. has a huge impact on the outcome of a given regular season game. Granted it is still an upset when Newport and Ludlow beat NewCath this season, it is not necessarily an indication of an erratic team.

I think that of the big 3 (Football, Basketball and Baseball), baseball is by far the most difficult to predict on a given day.

I've seen NCC 3 times this season (twice against Ryle) and will tell you that I would put them into the "erratic" category based solely on their fielding. They have some solid pitchers and some decent hitters, but badly struggled in the field all three games.

Who pitched for each team?

Jake Cain for 5 innings then the relief pitchers got shelled for 8 runs in the seventh. Cain was up 4-1 when he left the game. Ian Plank for 5 innings for Newport then shortstop Travis Jones pitched the last two for the victory.

Its a shame that travis jones plays for a team as bad as Newport. he is hitting about .445, with an O.B.P. of nearly .600. He is not only an outstanding shortstop, but an exccellent base runner, and is the closer for the pitching staff. He will never get the respect that he deserves.

Is he #10 for Newport? If so you are indeed correct. Very good ballplayer!
