Was wondering what it would be like for high school basketball is the team foul situation changed to mirror NBA.

 

Instead of fouls carrying over through a full half and seeing multiple free throws in a 2nd quarter, you could say each team gets 4 fouls each quarter and 1 and 1 begins on 5th foul. Double bonus could begin on the 7th foul or so.

I'm all for rule changes if it helps the game.

There are games that a team hits the bonus in the 1st quarter and the 2nd quarter becomes a parade to the free throw line and makes for a looonnnnggg quarter.

What's the problem though? I reffed a lot of games and watched a lot of games this year. Rarely did I see games where the double bonus came into effect with more than 2 or 3 minutes left in the half. Those marathons you speak of usually happen at the lower level games.

I would have to agree, there is not a problem now, so why change. The problem only exists with non talented teams that just like to foul or at lower level games. The officials are calling fouls they have to call and the teams just need to adjust. If they don't it's a marathon. Simple as that.

I too agree about not changing a thing. However, there is and was a specific team that played in the state tournament that takes advantage of having such a deep bench. Thus, this team created foul after foul and was trying to wear the other teams down. What if, 1 and 1 after 5 fouls, 2 shots after 7 fouls, and 3 shots after 10 fouls? Yes this is way out there but, it would stop some of the excessive fouling and good defense would be a must!!

Again, I say keep it as is. You're talking about a small percentage of teams that have the depth to do this AND choose to do this.

 

Are we going to change every rule that some/few teams take advantage of?

LBBC, I think it would be great for the game, especially if a team automatically went into the penalty under two minutes (on their 2nd foul of the last two minutes). I think it allows for teams to start over at the beginning of each quarter. I think it would especially be benifical at the start of games, you really never know how tight a game is going to be called until about mid-way through the first quarter anyways.

One of the issues out there is that teams have moved to a Pitino mindset from when he was at UK. Foul, foul and foul because the officials will quit calling all of them a foul.

 

Thus, I believe the game is more physical and less fouls are called that are fouls because the officials don't want to call all of them and have a parade to the free throw line.

 

And the parents/fans would be less critical from the stands if more fouls that are fouls are being called.

I have often thought that a player should get an extra foul if there is an overtime period. The coach gets an extra timeout.

I would agree on the extra foul in overtime, I think that is a very good idea, unless the player is fouled out. If they foul out in regular play then they should be done for the game but giving players another foul for overtime periods is a good idea. On the topic at hand though I think the rule is fine how it is. There are games where teams get in the bonus in the 1st and 3rd quarters and the games seem to drag on, but hey, it teaches the kids to hit their free throws!
