One of the main hang-ups, of course, is the fairness aspect of it in light of the new Thomas Nelson HS that's on the way. The Nelson Co. athletic facilities have been in the process of being upgraded the past couple years to get them up to par with what's going to be in place at TNHS.

 

What I can't figure out is why they didn't just make plans for turf at both fields to begin with? :idunno:

Surely you have been around the Nelson County school system to understand that it is probably the worst ran district in the state. Ok that is a broad statement due to the fact that I don't know every district, but this district is in pretty bad shape.

 

There is hope around the corner, on April 25th the new super will be named and there is no doubt that he or she cannot be as bad as the current one!

 

Although I am sure that the next super will come from within, that is just the way they roll here!

I agree completely. Lance is a cancer, good riddance. Hope NC gets what they need to be successful. Has ground broke yet on the new school??

Synthetic turf will not help a school that settles for mediocore sport teams. Grass or turf it doesn't matter!

Maybe the new Super. can put some emphasis on sports and acedemics and have a good balance. We surely need some support! Dr. Lance wouldn't give a dime for sports, and didn't do a very good job on acedemics neither.

Sorry, Yes I'm talking about your picture (avatar). Mike Mitchell use to play for Highlands , now plays for the Raiders and his number is 34. Just wondering if that is him in your picture.

Mercifully the Lantz tenure as Nelson superintendent will be ending at the end of the year. This district is in really bad shape, morale of the teachers is extrememly low, administrators are soft and the kids run the school. Did I leave anything out?

 

 

They need to not only bring the new superintendent in but get rid of every board member and start over with all new faces. We need a new voice, the only positive thing is there is no where to go but up because this district is currently floundering at the bottom.

There was supposed to be some discussion about the field at tonight's board meeting. Anybody know what was discussed? I have heard that the money for the new field is almost all the way rounded up.

They better pick up the pace. I have no idea what the time frame is when it comes to installing the turf, but I would think that it is a pretty time consuming process and the season is right around the corner.

 

I am a little concerned that they are sinking this much money into a new field, when there are a alot of other areas of the facilities that need an upgrade. It would be pretty lame to install new turf and have the turf surrounded by those delapadated bleachers (those things are a lawsuit waiting to happen). Whatever happened to them taking care of the fields at NC? Their fields used to be the best around. I know there were a lot of teams that played games on wet fields last season but it just takes a lot of work to keep them going, have the fields just been neglected? Does Nelson not have anyone taking care of the fields?

New bleachers are being installed this summer as part of the new field project.

 

As far as taking care of the field goes, given the rainy fall we had, an MLB groundskeeping crew would've struggled to get it in decent playing shape. It rained on four of the five home game Fridays (heck, it rained pretty much every Friday night last season), and took on lots of rain during the week. The soccer districts were delayed a few times for this as well. The field just never had time to dry up and drain, especially after the turf was torn up from the first couple weeks of rain.

From first hand knowledge, the past coaches acted as the grounds crew for the football field. Mark Brown in particular did an outstanding job of not only taking care of the field, but getting booster club members that knew what they were doing to help. It would be a tall task to do this all alone, but the orders need to be coming from someone on the staff who can help get the ball rolling. The field has been in terrible shape the past couple of years. Allof the same traffic that is on there now has been on that field since it was redone in 1996. There are too many bad things going on up there to list. The school and the community deserves better!
