Just got an update on a passing practice today vs Fairview. Sounds like Russell has a new qb with an arm. Heard he completed every throw against jv and Ivan brought him up for some varsity time and he continued to shine. Not sure of any score. I'll try to ascertain all the details when I get home.

Seriously, glad to here, I heard he was a good player. I don't know how he will fit in Russell's offense, but I would say they will find a place for him.

Not to sound too negative but Russell did well in 7 on 7 last year but failed to add it to the offensive game plan in 2009. I'll have to see it to believe it. (passing a lot in the season)

Well, it sounded negative. Haven't got the entire scoop but sounded like Davidson was impressive. I don't know if Russell will employ a passing game of any significance or not. I wouldn't expect west coast, but the threat of pass would be a welcome sight.

Is the new QB a player we've heard of before or someone new to the school? Is this the "new face" that "BlackandWhite" referred to earlier? I'm unaware of any passing phenoms that were coming up.

 

As for Davidson, I would expect him to do well at receiver. A 6-5, 220 lb plus, athletic receiver with good hands should be a big threat. From what I know of this year's team, he would my number 1 option. Of course, players might have moved positions, etc.

 

As for McGlone passing, there was one or two years where McGlone went to the air attack. I think the QB was Wyant (?) and the receiver was Day (?). I may be mistaken, but I think I recall that correctly. Maybe if he sees he has the personnel to throw a little more, then he'll be open to the possibility.

 

Who's going to play on the line? Who's going to carry the ball? There are lot of unknowns with this year's team I look forward to finding out.

Actually, it isn't negative. I stated Russell did well last year during the passing league. The problem was that when the season rolled around, they ran the same 5 plays.

Maybe we will PASS every third down this season. Who knows?

Russell has participated in 7 on 7’s for many years – and they always do well. McGlone seems to use these events to develop his secondary defense. It is not a knock on Russell or McGlone to say they don’t use the pass much. Russell under McGlone has been all about execution and ball control. Everyone knows what to expect. But, they do what they do very well. An effective threat of a pass will help them be good at what they prefer to do.

 

Now, Coach may surprise us all by really airing it out this year – but, that would not be “normal” for him, IMO.

I was only joking about McGlone participating in 7 on 7. It was a reference to the first year that he did participate. Great story, as told by McGlone himself:

 

Bill Tom Ross was the coach at Raceland, he had talked McGlone in to participating in a Passing League. McGlone showed up early and asked Coach Ross about the rules. Coach Ross explained that all you do is run pass plays, screens, drop backs, and the such. NO running plays. Coach McGlone said, "well that should be pretty easy, just pass plays and pass defense. Coach Ross, like a gentleman, let Russell go their first 10 plays on offense first. They rad their 10 plays and switched to defense. The first play that Raceland ran, the QB was under center, dropped back and handed the ball off to a RB for a draw play. The RB took off and ran for about 40 yards untouched. McGlone started screaming "that's not a pass play". Coach Ross screamed back, "I got you, I got you", "I have to keep you honest". So, McGlone was indoctrinated into 7 on 7's and the personality of Coach Ross.

It's true, there is a new face under center rotating with the others, DeHoff and Cooper (who by all accounts would be the heir apparent). Seems that Cooper could make a bigger impact as a receiver if another player could play QB. He seemed to catch everything last season in the defensive secondary. Just some thoughts.

Will Russell be able to beat Mason Co. this year? From all the reports I have heard Mason is loaded.

You think Mason is that much ahead of Belfry, Sheldon Clark, & Pike Central?

 

I did not see Mason in person last year so I know very little about them.
