CovCath wins their first game of the 2010 baseball season against 35th District rival Cov Holy Cross today at CovCath.

While the outfield was wet, it wasn't in too bad of shape considering the amount of rain we have had through the last couple of day's and the infield was in good shape. Great job Coach Krumps Coach Eck, players and staff to get this game in today.

The offensive play of the game was a two run Home Run (340 #1) by Ben Maile in the 4th inning with Stayton on, to put CovCath in the lead for the first time in the game.

The defensive play of the game was in the top of the seventh inning with CovCath leading 6-5. Andy Roenker with a 1-2 count hits a single. Egan with a 1-0 count hits a rope just to the right of CovCath senior second baseman Logan Siemer who goes parallel to the ground diving for the ball and makes the catch and after landing, gets up to his knees and throws a strike to Ben Maile at first to double up Roenke. So instead of having runner on 1st and 3rd with no one out, Siemer again saves the game by making an outstanding defensive play.:notworthy:

Gerewe 70 pitches 5 innings 26 PA 6 hits 5 runs 1 earned run 3 walks and 5 K's

Bruegerman 24 pitches 2 innings 6 PA 1 hit 0 runs 0 earned runs 0 walks 1 K

Outstanding pitching effort by both CovCath pitchers, especially by David Bruegerman who was out last year with a injury.

CovCath Batting

Siemer 4 PA 2 hits (double) and 1 rbi

Warning 4 PA 1 hit 1 rbi 2 K's and 1 sb

Klein 4 PA and 2 walks

Gerewe 4 PA 2 hits (double) 1 rbi and 1 walk

Taylor (PR for Gerewe) 1 run scored

Stayton 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit 1 K and reached base via E-8

Maile 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit (Home Run 340 #1) 2 rbi 1 hbp and 2 K's

Taylor (PR for Maile)

Martin 3 PA 2 hits 1 rbi and 1 walk

Slagbaum 3 PA 1 run scored and 1 walk

Severson 3 PA 2 runs scored 1 hit 2 walks and 1 SB

While anytime you beat Cov Holy Cross it's sweet, this season with all the new faces on the field it's even sweeter.

Great job gentlemen, keep it up! :thumb:

BM: Coach Eck hasn't given me a roster yet this season!

My future son-in-law is visiting us this weekend, and he brought his machine with him and is using my Internet access to update some of his software.

I was using his machine and didn't have access to my last year stats to look up how to spell the name correctly.

I have been promised a roster this week so hopefully I won't be making these spelling mistakes.

If I had had a Holy Cross Roster, I would have used their names instead of numbers but......

Great ball game. Looks like a loaded CovCath team. Played some good baseball while sitting some players. Everything you would expect in a first game of the season. Few balls bobbled, couple misplayed fly balls, and a lot more. I did find it interesting that yet another Maile went deep for CCHS though. Teams only thought they were done pitching around a player with that last name.

I'm not going to read too much into this one yet. I think the 35th is wide open. HC treated it almost as a scrimmage throwing about 5 or 6 pitchers including a freshman and not one of them was named Roenker.

Huge shot by Maile off of the freshman. Monster blast. The youngster will learn for HC that you can't throw fastballs up. He'll learn. Looks promising.

I was wondering if this maybe the case. Knowing it wasn't a seed game and seeing pitchers struggle with nerves while trying to find the plate led me to believe they maybe throwing youngsters. Makes me feel a lot better about HC then. I was afraid of the possibility of Andy Roenker and the starter being it for pitching.

Wish I'd known you were there Clyde. I would've visited.:thumb:

Sounds like it will be a month or so before we see Andy on the mound.

I heard the same thing and have even been told that he would only be throwing in games that meant something, like the district games or All "A" games but I wonder if that will give him enough innings to get him in top form? Tough to just come in and pitch in the "big games", without getting innings throughout the season.

Also heard Andy is thinking of walking on at the University of Cincinnati, as is CovCath outstanding second baseman, Logan Siemer.

BTW while HC did throw a lot of pitchers, they did throw Ritter, and Egan, two of their better pitchers.

One last comment: Chris Gerwe will be attending the University of Kentucky next year on an Academic Scholarship. How good is that scholarship? I was told that his education, his room and board, as well as his books will be one hundred percent paid for and to top it off, he had so much scholarship money left over, that he will be receiving a monthly check from UK that will be deposited into his checking account to be spent as he see fit!

Congrats Chris, outstanding job on the diamond and more importantly, in the classroom!

That's awesome.

I know the Gerwe family quite well. They're all geniuses.

Point is they staffed it out, they were trying to get guys innings. But, good game played on CCH's part. Andy will get his work in, and will be ready for all "A" and districts. I feel like CCH has a smaller team this year than past, but they still can hit.

Also, on a sidenote, I feel like the 35th is as wide open as it has ever been in past years.

It was my first time seeing Gerwe pitch. Solid pitcher.

Who caught for the Colonels?

Did Broering pitch for HC?
