March 15, 201016 yr I agree the overall point your trying to make but completely disagree with the way you are trying to make it. It just doesn't make since. If MSU takes care of business with the schedule they had they are in. If APB doesn't win their conference tourny they aren't in. End of story. :thumb:
March 15, 201016 yr Mississippi State along with Virginia Tech, Ole Miss, etc. I do not feel the least bit sorry for any of these schools. :thumb: Neither do I. You can't lose to cupcakes and expect to get in the tourney, it's not going to happen.
March 15, 201016 yr Mississippi State has only themselves to blame for not making the field, based on their non-conference schedule. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is in the play-in game having won the SWAC with a 17-15 record. They started the season 0-11. Went 14-4 in the conference. During that 0-11 start -- Lost to UTEP by 18 Lost to Arizona State by 17 Lost to Michigan by 14 Lost to Oklahoma State by 15 Lost to Georgia Tech by 12 Lost to Missouri by 18 Lost to Kansas State by 14 No wins but no blowout losses either. The average SOS of the non-conference teams APB played was 78. The average SOS of the non-conference teams Miss. State played was 178. No BCS conference basketball school should complain about not getting into the tournament when they have Bethune-Cookman, Texas Pan American, and Centenary on their schedule. So why did UTEP make it as an at large? Their strength of schedule was worse than Miss. State's. Who have they beaten? I agree with the Virginia Tech coach, there needs to be some consistency. The NCAA tends to talk out of both sides of their mouth, depending on which case they are trying to make at that time.
March 15, 201016 yr And none of that would have matter had they beaten Ryder and won at least one of the two between WKU and Richmond. They went 9-7 in a down SEC. Combine that with the 3 bad non conference losses and they are on the outside looking in. Rider shot 63% from the 3 point line in that game and also shot 9 more FT's than Miss. St. Richmond is not a bad loss, they are in the tourney as a #7 seed.

Out of Conference they beat mighty Sienna. :idunno: Wake has some wins in the early part of the year but finished 9-7 in the down ACC and lost in the first round of their tourney to Clemson as well as being 1-5 at the end of the year. :idunno: How are their resumes that much better?

I didn't say they were or that they should be in over MSU. I don't really care. It's pretty silly to argue who got left out because at the end of the day none of these teams did what they needed to do. My point of posting in this thread was to point out that Scribes comparison was silly. To say APB gets it doesn't make since. The only thing they got was beat by just about every non conference team they played. The only chance they had to get in was to win their conference tournament.

March 15, 201016 yr Author If you want to get better, you play better teams. It was a gamble that APB made. But its not like they were blown out of any of those NC losses. If they were to have beat a couple of them, they would have had at worst an NIT bid. I can remember not long ago when the West Coast Conference was a 1-bid league. Same with the Horizon League. My point is, APB gambled with their scheduling. You can say it didnt pay off by virtue of their 0-11 record. Or, you can say it got them ready for their conference schedule. If Mississippi State or Virginia Tech took the same approach to their non-conference schedule, they likely could have gotten an at large bid. And yes, I realize that all teams schedule cupcakes. But Mississippi State had 15 non-conference games before SEC began. Houston and Mid-major Old Dominion are the highlights. ODU only gets mentioned because they won their league tournament. With the seniors Stansbury had coming back, and knowing the SEC West was going to be down, he should have scheduled up. Like APB. That's the point.
