Triple_Threat Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Good story line in the first round game when the Scott County Cardinals meet the Corbin Redhounds at Rupp. Pietrowski was a sophomore playing for Hicks when he took a Corbin team to state in '92. Tony is a great guy and has done a great job with the Corbin team for multiple years now. Good luck to both but I think the Cards will have too much.
the mathemagician Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Hicks said that, although he's looking forward to the game, he wishes the two teams were meeting in the title game rather than the opening round.
4chs Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Here is a story from Thursday's Times Tribune on this. http://thetimestribune.com/sports/x1029319601/Hicks-Corbin-holds-a-place-in-my-heart
4chs Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Clay Co. went to state in '92 not Corbin. I believe Hicks led Corbin to the state in 1991.
dawgs83 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I believe Hicks led Corbin to the state in 1991. Corbin Lost to Fairdale in the Quarterfinals in 91. I remember it being close 67-61. Corbins Bo Roaden(not sure spelled right) was their best player hit a 3 qt court shot at the end of the third period that got Corbin bck in the game. Almost pulled off the upset
Redhound0934 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 You're all right...it was 1991. Also, Tony was a freshman. Good start to the thread...just need better research.
Les Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Hicks said that, although he's looking forward to the game, he wishes the two teams were meeting in the title game rather than the opening round. Yeah, he said that in two stories in the Times-Tribune the past two days.
The Scribe Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Will Rick Jones be an honorary captain for both teams?
Les Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Here is story that appeared in Friday's Times-Tribune When Billy Hicks left Corbin High School in 1994 to become Scott County High School’s coach, he figured he would be the Cardinals’ head man for at least five years before going back to the mountains to coach another high school. But two state championships and 16 years later, Hicks remains as Scott County’s coach. “When I decided to go to Scott County, it had nothing to do with Corbin,” Hicks said. “I just saw it as a challenge. I wanted to show every one that had the perception that mountain basketball wasn’t that good, that it was good. I had a lot I wanted to prove and I believe we’ve shown how successful mountain basketball is. “I know it was a rough move for my family,” he added. “They cried about it for two weeks, but I’m one that tends to not look back and accept the next challenge. I wanted to see if I could be successful in the Bluegrass area and I believe we’ve done pretty good.” Hicks admitted he never thought that he would stay at Scott County for 16 years. “My plan was to stay here for five years, but I’m in year 16 now,” he said. “My family loves living in Georgetown and it’s a great place.” But Hicks wouldn’t rule out taking over as a head coach somewhere else down the road. “I just don’t know,” he said. “That’s a tough question. You know, I looked at the Knott County Central job last year, but the timing wasn’t right. Thank God I didn’t go because here we are at the state tournament again, but to say I’ll never coach anywhere else — you never know.” Hicks said when he took over the coaching reigns at Corbin in 1986, he was young and eager to get the basketball program on the map — maybe a bit too eager. “Shoot, I came down here and fell in love with this place,” he admitted. “I asked the superintendent (Louie Martin) where some nice areas would be to buy a house and he told me that maybe I should just rent for a while because the program wasn’t that strong — it sure wasn’t what it is today. “Both me and my wife were looking for teaching jobs and I have to give credit to three gentlemen that helped me get the job — Glenn Freeman, Jerry Bird and Deray Smith. At one time it looked like it wasn’t going to happen, but those three guys talked to the superintendent and I got the job.” Once Hicks got things going with the Redhound program, it was full steam ahead. “I took over this program with a lot of energy and I was ready to build the program,” he said. “It was a lot of hard work and I couldn’t have done it without the help of people like Randall Sawyers and Boyce Fredericks.” During Hicks’ stay at Corbin, he turned Corbin into one of the top programs in the state. The Redhounds had memorable battles with Harlan and Clay County and Hicks’ 1991 squad captured the 13th Region championship for the first time since 1952, and it snapped Clay County’s seven-year reign as 13th Region champions. But it was Hicks’ final game as Corbin coach that still bothers him even today — a 102-99 triple overtime defeat to Jackson County in the 13th Region Tournament. “That was a heartbreaker,” Hicks admitted. “It still hurts because we had one of the top five teams in the state and we were good enough to win the state, too. “Dag gone it, that was a tough loss,” he added. “We had some kids sick, got in foul trouble and it was just a tough loss — the worst I’ve had.” It didn’t take Hicks long to establish himself at Scott County. He won the state championship in 1998 and again in 2007.

Thanks for the correction. Got to know coach Hicks after he came to Scott County but thought it was a neat story line. Should have said give or take a year!:thumb:
Deuce41 Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Mentor vs Player Never tell anyone everything you know becuase then they know everything you know and everything they know....

the mathemagician Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I remember Hicks' last game at Corbin very well. Corbin pulled out to a big lead(20+ points) against the underdog Jackson Co. team. It looked like Corbin would win by 40 or more. The Hounds became careless and got into some foul difficulty and the Generals crept back into the game. The depleted Hounds fell in triple OT. I remember seeing Bobby Keith and other Clay Co. faithfuls cheering vociferously for the Generals. Corbin was one of the top teams in the state and Clay wanted no part of that Redhound team, even in Manchester. Corbin may well have played for the state title that year had this game gone the other way. Most all of Corbin's key players had fouled out by the 3rd OT.
